Here’s a fun one- I got these from former band manager Marc Malakie last year. We had talked about making them a free download for the Jerry Perry benefit, but we ran out of time. I bought a reel to reel machine to transfer this (and future reels, and then had to get it refurbished for $400! So, enjoy this $550 transfer.

Here’s a tape that jumped out at my from Jason Ross’ collection. I am a big DI fan, so I figured I would pop this one in and listen while working. It is a decent audience recording done with an Aiwa HS-J15 and a custom mic. It sounds a bit like a Sony Pro Walkman D3 recording. I caught DI in June of this year and they were playing a very similar set.

and here is the post intended for today. This one took some detective work- the DAT was labeled vaguely and the old WJUL call letters were taken over by a classic rock station in Georgia.
This is a really good quality “live in the radio studio” session plus an interview that isn’t painful! Well done!

More awesome Glam/Hair metal from Laura Martinez’ collection. S.F.’s X-Men released 2 demos in 1990 and it seems that was it. This is one of those 2 demos. 6 songs, well produced.

We have another new contributor who dropped off a couple of really rare demo tapes for sharing. Thanks Shawn Walberg for loaning the tapes!
The first one is from Phibes Infernal Machine. To my ears, they sound like part of the wave of funk/alternative/metal bands that popped up in the early 1990s. Happy to have this one documented since the only other recorded output from the band is the Sacto Active Rock episode, as far as I know.

Here I am, working my way through Jason Ross’ collection of tapes and there is this band called Animal Crackers at the end of one of the tapes. They aren’t bad and the best thing is that they poke fun at the overly serious NYHC scene. I do some digging around and the band and TED LEO was the vocalist!! What the hell? I had no idea. Too funny.

This one is from Laura Martinez’ collection. I want to thank the lead vocalist for this band for announcing WHO the band was, WHERE they were from, and WHERE they were playing right after the first bunch of songs. Otherwise, this would have been a huge mystery. Bands, please take note. Make my job easier.
Young Gun were an 80s Hair / Glam Metal (Heavy Metal) band from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Changed name to Fury sometime in the 90s

Laura isn’t sure if she filmed this but it does look like master quality video. This is one of the earliest videos to be filmed at The Boardwalk. I did Tantrum there in November of 1989 and I don’t see anything earlier than that online.
