It’s going to be an all-Eggplant day! one audio and one video from Eggplant’s collection. This audio was on the B-side of a recording of Op Ivy’s 7/4/88 gilman set, and SB played the very next show at Gilman, on 7/8/88… so maybe this is that set. That doesn’t explain the mystery No Dogs board tape on there though.

Here’s a little MTX for today’s On This Date in History. It comes from Jim Utz’ collection that I digitized years ago. It’s only 9 minutes, I am not sure if there is more out there somewhere.
There were not many people documenting these smaller punk bands in the late 80s. There was Jim Utz in St. Louis, me in Sac/Bay Area, this guy who filmed the Anthrax shows, and a few others. Video Louis was in L.A. starting in the early 80s, thank goodness he captured that scene so thoroughly. Grateful to all of you guys for documenting it all.
I love this era of MTX. Jon Von was great in the band.

D’oh, I didn’t connect the dots with this one- Nicholas sent me a list of his stuff about 6 months ago and I forgot. R.I.P. Eddie Egan. I did not know Eddie personally, but he was a friend of a bunch of my friends. Eddie was a supporter of the early orange county punk scene, exec produced the HVY DRT album, and threw legendary parties (with bands) at his home in Perris, Ca. I have video of 2 bands from his 1988 party, which I received in trade with Tony Cadena back in the late 80s. I hope that Jack, Casey, JOD, Farrell and all the rest of the socal guys enjoy this one. Tons of crowd party shots as well.
Also, after months of dicking around with it, I finally have my lossless VHS transfer setup dialed in. I can now capture any videotape lossless with my JVC VCR’s and Datavideo TBC-1000 time base corrector, and have programs like Adobe Premiere recognize the AVI file. Thanks to king beam and Nicholas Serra for the help. It sounds easy to do, but it isn’t.

I went to this show to see Corrupted Morals- I had never heard VF before. They blew me away- they were so different than anything else I had heard before. Over the nest year, they became one of my favorite bands and still are today. The audio is not so good on this one- I was still using the stock microphone on the Aiwa CV80 and Ralph’s guitar sound + that mic= bad news. Great show.

So I went to this show for Corrupted Morals and they were good as usual. The next band was a band I had never heard- Victim’s Family. I had never heard anything like them before. This was one of those shows that was life-changing, as I would be chasing VF around for 20+ years

Aww, here is a fun one for On This Date in History. A year after our punk band dissolved, John Conley and Mike Yoas(Desario) teamed up with Mike’s brother Dan on drums and Tim Christian on bass. Even though they were playing jangle pop, John has the old punk rock shirt on. Nice!

Here is the other early Uncle Tupelo show on that VHS tape from yesterday, and it is a fun one! Chris Constance(Pants Elderly) posted 4 of the 15 songs from the show, but this appears to be the first time that the entire set is up on youtube.. and it was transferred with the lossless setup so it’s as good as it’s gonna get… Unless we find a better VHS copy.
The band does many of their early songs but they also mixed in covers by KISS, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, CCR, and Skynyrd… yup, Skynyrd. CLASSIC show. I can’t remember the source- Jim and/or Michael, do you know? I do remember getting it as close to the master as possible.
Fun fact (to me at least): The theater is still open- it opened in 1921 and is believed to be haunted!

It’s time for another archival Chatterbox video from Alfie Kulzick! It seems that this Short Dogs Grow/Papa Wheelie show had the audio mastered way too high. I will try to fix the SDG audio when I get a chance, but I did everything I could to keep this from distorting, and this is where it landed.
By the way, this is not the Jason Newsted band. This is a bay area band that existed 10 years before the discogs/newsted band/version did. They played all the time back in the late 80s.
