D.R.I.- Numbers or Axiom,Houston Tx 10/30/88 xfer f/1st gen VHS tape Complete Dirty Rotten Imbeciles

I have mentioned Mike Elias(sp?) before- he is/was a character who we traded videos with- he used to blatantly film bands without permission- and if he got caught/shut down, he would write me “those guys are essholes”(he would send me letters with these grievances). He definitely had a unique approach. If anyone knows where he is now, please let me know.

I have found 3 different references regarding the venue for this show- Mike’s info and newspapers dot com show it as a venue called numbers. metallipromo has a hand written flyer that shows Axiom. I am going with Numbers.

Jim Utz and I both traded tapes with Mike, and this one comes from Jim’s collection. Clearly audience shot with a bunch of heads in the way. At least it sounds good.

Jane’s Addiction- Club Xcess, Houston Tx. 10/11/88 xfer from 1st gen VHS Tape Perry Farrell Complete

This video is similar to the one I posted 9 months ago for one of the very first “On This Date” posts I made. It’s a Janes Addiction show from Houston, comes from Jim Utz’ collection and was filmed by Mike Elias(sp?). It’s odd that Janes would play 2 shows 3 months apart in Houston, but I guess that’s how it rolls when you are blowing up in popularity and you get to open for Iggy Pop.

7 Seconds- Powertools, Houston Tx. 8/3/88 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape Punk

I traded with this guy in Houston, and he was quite a character. I think his name is Mike Elias (Alias?), but my memory is fuzzy. He used to blatantly film bands without permission- and if he got shut down, he would write me “those guys are essholes”(his exact er, words). He definitely had a unique approach. 🙂 If anyone knows where he is now, please let me know. I lost a master tape and he is the only guy who I know, who has a 1st gen copy of something I really want back.
Anyway, I did not trade for this one- my good friend Jim Utz did, and this is from his collection.

Young Fresh Fellows- Liberty Lunch, Austin Tx 7/27/88 xfer f/master audio cassette

I don’t know how Craig got such good results with his recording setup. I think he had an aiwa and standard mic… but I didn’t need to EQ this one at all. The vocals were muddy and a bit buried in the mix, but not much to do about that.

This appears to be the only complete set recording from the 1988 tour online. That kinda blows me away- you would think that there is at least one other one..

The Pogues- Liberty Lunch,Austin Tx 6/8/88 xfer f/master audio cassette complete show Shane MacGowan

Collections post from Craig Hilmer’s collection today. It’s a decent audience recording of The Pogues when they hit Liberty Lunch on their “If I Should Fall From Grace With God” tour… so kinda at their peak. At least it’s MY favorite album of theirs.
There is a ton more from Craig’s collection like this. I get all excited every time I dig in there!

Los Lobos– Laurie Aud, Trinity University, San Antonio Tx 5/5/88 Spanish Tour f/1st gen audio Tape

NEW COLLECTION- last week, my old friend Craig Hilmer visited California from his home in Minnesota. We traded tapes in the 80s and 90s, and got to be pretty good friends. I even shipped out the Marantz PMD430 so he could record a concert that he promoted- Yo La Tengo at Beerland in Austin (he lived there at the time). It had been about 35 years since we hung out, so I made the 3 hour drive to SF. It was nice meeting his wife (Lori) and family friend.

The part that you might care about is that Craig brought a shopping bag full of his master recordings. He taped so many early alternative bands- the one pile I pulled so far has this, The Pogues, 4 R.E.M. shows, Lawrence McMurtry, and Camper Van Beethoven– all from 1988-1989. So this is going to be fun!

When I pulled this one to digitize, I figured it would be one of those echoey college auditorium types of things. Nope, this sounds fantastic! I didn’t need to do much of anything to make it sound better. I pushed the bass a little. That was it.

EDIT: D’oh! This is riddled with errors! Craig promoted a show with YLT at Tacoland in San Antonio, not Beerland in Austin. Also, this is one of 2 or 3 tapes that Craig sent that he did not tape. It was an acquaintance from San Antonio who used a Sony WMD6C.

Thanks Craig!

Meat Puppets- Liberty Lunch, Austin Tx 4/9/88 transfer from low gen Soundboard FM audio cassette

Craig Hilmer comes through again with the Liberty Lunch tapes. He is not exactly sure of the lineage of this one, but it was at the end of one of his master tapes so there was no way that he could have traded for it. A radio station in Europe (Italy?) apparently had an agreement with LL to broadcast some shows. Meat Puppets was one of them. I think Thin White Rope was another. Hopefully Mark Pratt from LL can fill us in about this European connection.

Posting back-to-back today. This one is from Jason Ross’ collection. At this point, I am just grabbing handfuls of tapes from some of these collections and digitizing them and then checking online to see if it is out there. This one doesn’t seem to be online, so here ya go. I used to love this band in the late 80s.

Watchtower- San Antonio, Tx February 1986 xfer f/ ? Gen VHS Tape Progressive Technical Thrash Metal

Here’s one that hardcore fans of this band will probably enjoy, and there seems to be quite a few fans out there.

This one comes from Chris Eng’s collection and it was on the same VHS tape as that Annihilation from Rock on Broadway that I posted last month. No idea where it came from.

Watchtower- San Antonio, Tx 11/85 xfer f/VHS tape Progressive/Technical Thrash Metal Dangerous Toys

I pulled the wrong disc for today’s On This Date in History, so let’s do a collections post first. I posted a Watchtower video last month from Chris Eng’s collection, and here is the other one that was on the tape. This band was one of those bands who became legendary and more well-known after they broke up. They reunited in the 2010’s and released a CD. This has an early lineup with Jason Mcmaster(I think), who went on to Dangerous Toys later in the 80s.
