Murphys Law- Transit Union Hall, St. Louis Mo 5/27/89 xfer from VHS Master? Tape NYHC Hardcore

Once again I am pillaging Jim Utz’ awesome collection of videos for today’s On This Date in History. I had a bunch of stuff to choose from today including an entire 5 band lineup of master videos from cafe colonial in 2016, but I did all locals yesterday so this one wins out. The rest will be posted over time.
This video is pretty nice quality- good audio and video- but some people get in the way at times and obstruct the view.

The Accused- Bernard’s Pub, St. Louis Mo 5/5/89 xfer from master VHS-C Tape Full Complete Show Punk

I seem to be leaning heavily on Jim Utz’ video masters for recent On This Day in History posts- I hope that’s alright with you all. Jim was a busy guy back then- he taped that Ultraman show on the 1st and then he was back at it with W.T.G. and The Accused at Bernard’s on the 5th.
Here’s the Accused in all their early glory. I think they were on the Maddest Stories tour here.

Ultraman- Transit Union Hall, St. Louis Mo 5/1/89 xfer from VHSC Master Tape

For today’s On This Date in History, I pulled a DVD out from Jim Utz’ collection. Jim and Mark Deniszczuk (drummer from Ulatraman) both sent me their VHS-C tapes at different times, taped with the same camera!

I was surprised that this one wasn’t online yet- I figured that someone (like the great oldschoolstl channel) would have put this up already.

Even though it looks a bit cloudy/fuzzy, this is really off the master. I did it with my older (but still good) transfer rig, and those old VHS-C cameras were kinda notorious for the fuzzy picture. Back in the 80s, you had to make a choice- fuzzy VHS-C, grainy/snowy 8mm, or nice quality VHS but that meant hauling around a 10lb giant beast on your shoulder. Haha.

7 Seconds- Sports Palace, St. Louis Mo. 8/8/88 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape

This is a pretty unique show- Bobby’s guitar was not getting power for a good portion of the set, so the rest of the band did a bunch of dub versions of the song with the crowd singing along. I love spontaneous moments like these. The power loss/singalong starts at about 5min in. The crowd just keeps going when Kevin’s mic loses power as well. SO cool.
This was filmed by my good friend Jim Utz. Like I have mentioned before, cameras, tapes and batteries were super expensive back then (that’s why there are not a ton of opening band videos). Jim would record the master on a VHS-C tape and transfer it to VHS, then record another show on the VHS-C tape. So, this is a transfer from the lowest surviving copy of the show.

Yo La Tengo- Mississippi Nights, St. Louis Mo 3/4/88 Proshot xfer from VHS Master Tape

So I had posted this one a long time ago and it was pulled down by matador. I am totally perplexed about it, since other yo la tengo content is allowed to survive on youtube. Does anyone know if this was ever part of an official release?

Anyway, here it is again. I don’t think it will be found by the evil overlords. Enjoy.

WTG- VFW Hall, St Louis Mo 11/28/87 Xfer f/1st gen VHS tape W.T.G. Whoppers Taste Good Punk Metal

Today’s On This Date in History comes from Jim Utz’ collection. It’s a transfer of a 1st gen VHS tape, right off the VHS-C master but you can see some significant generation loss. The band members are mostly in the dark and the background is lit well. Jim has a bunch of WTG videos and many of them are better quality than this, but this is the only one that takes place on 11/28.

If we could get a hold of the VHS-C master tape and do the lossless transfer, we could make this look a lot better.

Camper Van Beethoven- Mississippi Nights, St. Louis Mo. 11/5/87 xfer f/master off Studio 1/4″

The other concert on that Fishbone tape was this classic show by Camper Van Beethoven. Camper(along with R.E.M.) was my favorite band in the world at the time. All of us CVB fans/traders were thrilled to get such a nice quality video… and a killer performance as well. I love Jonathan’s violin sound on this one.

This came from KDHX directly- this is a VHS tape right off of their 1/4″ master tape. Huge thanks to Jim Utz & Dede Schofield for giving these to me 20ish(30?) years ago.

Adrian Belew & the Bears- Mississippi Nights, St. Louis Mo. 8/11/87 Proshot xfer from studio master

Happy thanksgiving to everyone who is celebrating this year. Ever since I learned that the crap they teach you in school is not exactly truthful, I think of the holiday differently. I am thankful for many things, one of them being that I can enjoy getting all of my collection out for people to see.. and people seem to pay attention and enjoy them. I appreciate all of the friends I have made through the music scene over the past 35 years.
Anyway, I was surprised to see that this was not posted yet. I worry that it will get blocked- we will see, I guess. This was one of the bigger, more mainstream artists that double helix filmed over at Mississippi Nights in the 80s. I am also thankful that they had the vision to film these bands– not many videos from that era are this good.
