Unknown Opening band for Final Summation- Samurai Duck, Eugene OR 7/2/05
This appears to be a Riot Grrl style band, and I assume they are from the northwest since they are opening a show in Seattle. Does anyone know who this is? I am not knowledgeable about this era/type of music, so any help is appreciated.

The Thermals- Vera Project, Seattle Wa. 2/5/05 xfer from DAT Master Audio Live
As I was digging around for the Muffs DAT soundboard from the boardwalk, I found a few other DATs that were from around the same time that I wanted to listen to last night. Here’s the first one. This is an early Thermals concert- a hometown show from the “F*ckin’ A” era. So cool to hear a set made completely of those first 2 albums.
Sound is decent but not spectacular. This was before Vera Project was gobbled up by the EMP monolith, so the place was more like gilman back then.

Here’s another short video for you- it’s short video day I guess. This one is from Arica Pelino’s collection. As I digitized all of The Enemies shows that she taped on that March 2003 west coast tour, there was this 3 minute clip of The Subhumans that was recorded after the enemies’ set that was not labeled on the tape. Taped from the backstage area- there are some great crowd/venue shots.

Rancid- DV8, Seattle Wa 10/11/95 Audio only xfer from low gen cassette East Bay Punk
This one is an audience tape, but it sounds pretty decent so I figured I’d post it. There was a guy in the northwest who taped on DAT back in the 90s, but his recordings were usually a little more bass-heavy. Regardless, sounds like a pro walkman tape at minimum.

Here’s today’s On This Date in History. I can’t remember who I got this from, but he claimed that he taped it off the board. The guitar was buried in the mix so I popped it in Izotope and it did a pretty nice job with it. You never know how Izotope will behave with imperfect board tapes, especially ones on cassette but an impressive job this time. Between the lack of hiss, Izotope’s ability to repair, plus a few minutes of intro music (trimmed out), I guess it really is a 1st gen board. Cool. In fact, it might be the best unreleased Ruby Sea-era recording I have heard.

The Posies- OK Hotel, Seattle Wa 1/6/91 xfer f/2nd gen audio cassette complete
Man, this was a tough day to find something for On This Date in History. I digitized a pristine Willie Nelson BBC session off DAT only to discover that it took place on 6/1. Damned european date formats!
Back in 1991, the posies were incredible. I got to see them in Sacramento 3 months after this and they blew us all away. They were LOUD for the type of music they played. Maybe that’s why this tape had very little guitar- I think the taper “stack taped” the set, so they got mostly what was being run through the soundboard. That resulted in a lot of drums and vocals with this one. I did my best to fix it up in Izotope, but any more guitar boost added harsh high end annoyances.
An 85 minute set (w/killer covers) in 1991 is a real treat.

Fastbacks- Off Ramp Cafe, Seattle Wa 1/6/91 xfer from 4th gen audio cassette Subpop Punk
I miss the Fastbacks- I even emailed Kurt to see if there was any chance they were going to play anytime soon. I didn’t hear back :-). Oh well, it was worth a try.
This is a decent audience recording of the band. Sounds like a Sony D3 recording to me. Very listenable but not perfect.
