I bought my first video camera in 1988 just so I could video tape Operation Ivy. This is probably the best of the videos I did of them, as the lighting is good and the performance is great. One of the few Clear and Distinct Ideas shows (Stewart Katz) I ever did.

With this one, I attempted to brighten the video and it did not turn out well. This version has been de-noised with neat video. It is still a bit dark but much cleaner.
I also have a different audio source from “anonymous” that we can hopefully synch one day.
When we used to go to shows back in the late 1980’s, I would bring my video camera and my good friend “Anonymous” would audiotape. Even before he bought his WMD6C pro walkman in May of 1989, his audio was almost always superior to my video camera’s audio. I have all of his audiotapes here, and still need to digitize about 95% of them. There are quite a few videos that I filmed that would benefit from his improved audio. I think the only one we synched before this one was Fugazi at Gilman in 89. Anyway, the stock audio on this video always bugged the hell out of me because the midrange was totally distorted. Anonymous used a consumer Aiwa recorder to record the show and it was average at best. I remixed it twice- once in Ixotope RX7, then again in Sony Soundforge. It’s now listenable! Huge thanks to Kingbean for the audio video synch

Here’s an On This Date in History that some folks might like… I traded 2 tapes with a guy who came up to me at Gilman and asked if I traded video. 2 trades and that was it. I didn’t really know his full name, I think his first name was Mike.
Anyway, he is the one who provided the 2nd angle of Op Ivy’s last show that allowed for a 2 camera edit. His camera was also much better in low light, which helped a lot at Gilman.
This might have been the last time the band played berk square. They were opening for 7 Seconds here. Audio is distorted but picture is clear.

Op Ivy played cotati cabaret a couple times in late 1988- this is a copy from Radley’s master board tape. The very beginning (about a minute) is all drums- be sure to skip a couple minutes in to hear how the show really sounds! Radley sent me a nice christmas card today- thank you, sir.

I got a late start today because I had a couple of appointments this morning, and I sit down at the desk and nothing is working right. The On This Date post stuck in “processing is taking longer than usual” on youtube- ya think? 12 hours is about 11 and a half hours longer than usual. So, tear that one down and redo. Looks like it will be done in an hour and then I start upload.
I have not forgotten about the Patreon “voter’s choice” winners from last week. the first one is coming up today as a bonus post. It took me days to figure out a vegas freezing issue. That’s right- 3 posts today, all afternoon/evening time frame.
Speaking of Patreon voters, they are currently voting on a soundboard from legendary Gilman soundman’s Radley Hirsch’s collection. If you want in on this action, I will add the Patreon link below as well. You can also “tell me what to do” for a bit more $.
This one is also from Radley’s binder of goodies. I took pictures of the discs in the binder a few years ago but I just spent way too much time looking for them. Here’s a temu photo- it looked like this with “operation ivy rough master” written on it. use your imagination, I am tired of looking. I know that some of these were dubbed to cassette by Radley for us back in the late 80s, but I assume that these are more complete and lower gen. Enjoy.
Plus I am battling a migraine. Thank science for Imitrex!

Here’s another one that Radley dubbed on cassette for us back in the 80s. The mix on this one was lacking bass, guitar and drums so I did some work in Izotope on it. The first 4min has the snare WAY too loud, then it drops out of the mix. So stick with it- good show.

Here is the post for today- it’s another full show from the Gilman benefit streaming event. This one was taken from the cleanest VHS copy available- the tape comes from legendary soundman Radley Hirsch’s VHS tape, transferred with a high end VHS setup. If you have heard/seen other versions of this show on youtube, the straight board mix on the video is not great. It is basically all bass and vocals. We extracted the audio and we were able to improve it a little. You can now hear guitar and there is some snare in there as well.

OK, I am stretching the rules of the Sac Music Archive a bit. I did not tape this, it is not a sacramento based band, but there is a story behind it…
There are a couple of events that really motivated me to save for 5 MONTHS (working for $6 an hour) to buy a video camera. One was borrowing a rented video camera from Attitude to film RKL at Gilman on 1/16/88. The other one was seeing Operation Ivy and Isocracy on new years 1988(12/31/87). Op ivy instantly became my favorite band.
So on a Friday, I get off work with my $650 and go to Montgomery Ward to buy a video camera. The sales guy tells me that the Aiwa that I picked out can film for “about 2 hours” on a battery pack. So I charge the battery and shoot down to Gilman to film Op Ivy’s return show, from their US tour in Mar-Apr 1988.
I film one of the opening bands- Neighborhood Watch, then I turn on my camera to film op ivy. The battery is dead. I plug my camera in from the back of the venue and did not like filming from back there, so I shut it off. So, no video of this show but here is a nice sbd. This is probably a better quality version than the bootlegs that surfaced of this show.
