Jawbreaker- Off the Alley, Homewood Il. 3/31/94 xfer from unknown gen VHS tape Live East Bay Punk

I don’t have much time so this one needs to be quick. Here is another one from the Turn it Around digitizing project, from Jason Ross’ collection. The gen is unknown but it is relatively low. It looks like only 1 song in inferior quality has made its way to YT so far.

Uncle Tupelo- Scotty’s, Bloomington Il 10/13/93 xfer f/Cassette-DAT Soundboard master Farrar Tweedy

Today’s On This Date in History is a major upgrade to an old, well-circulated show. I had a 5th(!) generation cassette copy of this back in tape trading days, but we (probably Steve Brothers or Michael Pemberton) was able to get the master tape bounced to DAT.

That provided a clean enough version of this to run through Izotope and get some decent results. The only issue that I hear is that the violin is WAY too loud. Otherwise, it turned out pretty good.

Ne’er Do Wells- No Palace Studios, Chicago Il. 10/9/93 xfer from 1st gen VHS Tape Green Day Hi-Fives

For today’s On this Date in history, I learned about this Lookout Records supergroup. The Ne’er Do Wells had John Kiffmeyer/Al Sobrante on drums (Green Day, Isocracy, etc), Chris Imlay and John Denery from the Hi-Fives etc on guitars/vocals, and Jesse Hillyard on bass. They put out 2 releases in 1993 and that was it.

This comes from Jason Ross’ collection. Most likely filmed by the Byrne Brothers. I saw a podcast/youtube stream of the brothers and it sounds like they want their stuff digitized and put in one place. I’m RIGHT HERE. Reach out anytime. haha.

UPDATE: Additional info from Chris Imlay: “Neat! For the record, John Denery couldn’t make the Ne’er-do-Wells (and Thee Shatners) tour, so al, Jess and I (Chris) were joined by Paul Curran who was a friend of the band, and a famous East Bay creative person in his own right. That’s Paul playing without singing. He played in TONS of great bands including Crimpshrine and Go Sailor. I don’t remember playing this show…feels like a bunch of technical difficulties and talking with some “musical” interludes haha. The story Al tells about us being extras on the “Little Big League” film is true, by the way.”

Jawbreaker- McGregors, Elmhurst Il 8/23/93 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape Live East Bay Punk

I was finally organizing about 500 discs on random spindles into some semblance of order, and I came across these. I digitizied a ton of stuff for Corbett and the East Bay Punk documentary, and I kept the raw files for these ones. These come from Jason Ross’ collection of great tapes that he sent me a few years back.
This tape (as with most mcgregor’s tapes) is super overexposed. Now that I know how to adjust it with the Canopus, I will need to re-transfer this sometime in the future.
I’ll be posting east bay punk/gilman/lookout related artists all week!

Los Crudos- Daily Plaza Center, Chicago Il 7/17/93 xfer from low/1st gen VHS tape Political Punk

I was all ready to post a Chubbies video from Jim Utz’ collection for today’s On This Date in History, only to discover that this is the 17th, not the 18th. Whoops! Here is a video shot by Jason Ross and transferred from his master tape. I did this with my old digitizing setup a few years ago, so no 1080p and no enhancements. Still better than the 240p generated one on youtube now.

It’s time for the Patreon voter’s choice for last week! This one is yet another video filmed by the Byrne brothers and is from Jason Ross’ collection. This club appears to be tiny, it reminds me of the Cattle Club. Bob or Mike was right on top of Chris since there was no place to go.

Screeching Weasel- Circuits, Chicago Il 12/4/92 xfer f/1st gen VHS tape Enhanced Ramones Cover Set

Thanks to Mike Byrne for more info on this show. His brother Bob filmed this. Here’s what he had to say about it:
“33 years ago (1992, the show was 21 & over)My brother went and videotaped the show. This is right around the time that Screeching Weasel started to get really popular. A month before this show they almost sold out McGregors. The Methadones were supposed to open but ended up not playing (This was 8 years before I would join the band). Weasel played the entire Ramones debut album along with a song or two off of other Ramones albums (I Don’t Care and I Wanna Be Sedated) and two Weasel songs (Mary Was A Anarchist and Slogans).”

I did my best to brighten this up and denoise it, but it would look a lot better once a lossless transfer from the master happens.

Darling Buds- Metro, Chicago Il 12/2/92 xfer from 1st gen cassette WXRT-FM Broadcast

WXRT was such a cool station- they broadcast so many great shows in the late 80s, through the 90s. Many of them have been widely circulated and have even appeared on some official releases- gotta have that bonus material for reissues. This show seems to have flown under the radar a bit. I did not get this from my usual Chicago trading friends (Ross Weyman, Paul Galis, etc) and I got it after I was mainly trading on DAT… I wonder who I got it from…

Uncle Tupelo- Mabel’s, Champaign Il. 11/11/92 enhanced xfer from Hi8 master tape w/remixed DAT Audio

It’s funny, I never thought that this was a very good performance. Now that I revisit it after 28 years, it was probably one of the best shows of the tour. The original perception was probably due to me being tired and hungover(this was the day after the “I went to the wrong state” debacle), plus it was the 3rd show in 4 days, and also the lighting in the venue being weak.
I was able to brighten this one quite a bit and de-snow the picture, I also boosted the color intensity up quite a bit (like 85%) because the original was bland as hell. I was also able to get Izotope to get a decent read on this one (audience recordings are hit and miss) so I was able to boost guitar and vocals. The guitar was really low in the mix in the room.
Great performance, and probably the best I have ever heard Bill play with UT.

Uncle Tupelo- Lounge Ax, Chicago Il. 11/8/92 Enhanced video with DAT audio xfer from hi8 master tape

Back in 1992, I spent a week following Uncle Tupelo around the midwest. It was crazy- I had no idea what I was doing or where I was going. This was before GPS and I got myself into a couple of dumb situations that I’ll talk about in future posts.
This is the first show of the run… and probably the worst video. There was no place to set up my tripod, so I had to go handheld while standing on these bleacher-style seats on the side. Lots of heads in the way and it is a bit shaky.. but it is also the only performance of the Neil Young cover “motion pictures” caught on video. And it was my only time going to the legendary Lounge Ax venue, so it was still a good night.
The lighting was super uneven at the show. There were a couple of times (maybe 5-10min total) where Jay was lit extremely well, and the rest of the time lighting was low. I adjusted lighting for the majority of the set, which means that Jay is a bit overexposed at times.

Audio kicks in at about 25 seconds. I also have about 1 min video of the inside of lounge ax, if anyone wants to see it.
