I was looking at my old VHS tapelist over the weekend, because I could have sworn I had another SNFU Gilman show from 1987 but it must be gone… then I saw this tape and figured that would be fun to digitize.
Back in the mid-90s, I traded with a lady name Saki Honma. She was the biggest Uncle Tupelo fan in Japan- she even flew from Japan to St. Louis to see Tupelo’s last shows in 1994. She would tape stuff off of Japanese TV (they broadcast KILLER stuff in nice quality) and send it to me. This one is a VHS copy off of her SVHS master.
This clip has been posted to youtube 2 other times, but I think this is slightly better quality. I will be posting other bands from this day throughout the week.

I am totally perplexed as to why I didn’t personally transfer this one. I had the ability to transfer PAL tapes with a high end deck. I think this one might have had some difficulty playing back since it was so old. Thanks to local transfer house Videolab for the help here. It might be worth another try if Aaron wants to give me another shot.

I chose this for today’s On This Date in History not because of it’s great quality (it’s not), but because it seems to be pretty rare and I think this might be the only in-store performance with Gary Young.
Stockton representing for the 2nd day in a row!
The recording distorts a bit at volume so I tried to EQ as much of it out as possible across the 56 and 113 hz bands. The high hat/splash cymbal was super grating to I toned that down a bit as well.
Recording was only marked as “Rough Trade England”- no specifics of city.

There were quite a few choices for today’s On This Date in History, but I was in a TWR mood this morning.
It still blows me away that so many great bands played this tiny pub in Southampton. Green Day, MTX, Samiam, tons more.
The show starts out with no vocals due to a microphone cable issue. It’s fixed, then the vocals are buried in the mix as usual. Pretty good audience tape.

Time for a palate cleanse- this one is from Anonymous 3’s collection of tapes.
Interesting backstory on this one- they had Johnny Depp as rhythm guitarist before he hit it big with 21 Jump Street in the late 80s. In 1990, the band began recording demos for a second album titled Lost Generation. They recorded some 80 songs, all of which were rejected by Geffen. Frustrated by Geffen’s lack of interest, they went to London and recorded six songs with Thin Lizzy guitarist Brian Robertson, which Geffen also declined to support. These are from that 6 song session.
At least one of these tracks was released in 2010, on a compilation called “Rock City Angels- Midnight Confessions”- the first song Shazam’d to that release, but the second song appears unreleased.

Audio from Anonymous’ collection today. I think he got this one from Todd Goss. Unknown gen tape but it is likely low since Anon got this in the late 80s/early 90s. The Greyhound Pub is legendary hosting tons of bands, including Thin Lizzy and Status Quo in the 70s and 80s.

I spent more time looking for a flyer or era-appropriate photo of the band for this post, than I did actually transferring the tape! I gave up and used their logo. The venue is likely Adam & Eve’s- that seemed like the place to be in the mid 80s in Leeds.

I woke up today to awful news, making this an even more mediocre Monday than usual. Algy Ward from one of my all time favorite bands, Tank, passed away. I have loved their albums (especially those first 4) for about 40 years. I never got to see the band perfoem- I had recently said that I would fly anywhere in the world to see a set by them… well, that’s not happening. Damn.
Algy had an amazing early career- starting with The Saints, then moving over to The Damned when they were at the top of their game, then starting Tank. They then put out 4 great albums, broke up after the 5th, and then he seemed to lose momentum. I bought all the box sets and later releases but no US tours. I do have the one video from Boston on my website/channel, so check it out if you are interested.
This appears to be a live FM broadcast- especially since the MC appears to call the crowd a bunch of c*nts after Tank’s performance (!).
I did everything I could to fix the quality- I took to Izotope Rx8 and de-fluttered it(it had some nasty high end flutter), then rebalanced it and boosted guitar and bass. It’s still kind of a mess, but I enjoyed it.
