When we used to go to shows back in the late 1980’s, I would bring my video camera and my good friend “Anonymous” would audiotape. Even before he bought his WMD6C pro walkman in May of 1989, his audio was almost always superior to my video camera’s audio. I have all of his audiotapes here, and still need to digitize about 95% of them.
There are quite a few videos that I filmed that would benefit from his improved audio. I think the only one we synched before this one was Fugazi at Gilman in 89.
Anyway, the stock audio on this video always bugged the hell out of me because the midrange was totally distorted. Anonymous used a consumer Aiwa recorder to record the show and it was average at best. I remixed it twice- once in Ixotope RX7, then again in Sony Soundforge. It’s now listenable!
Huge thanks to Kingbean for the audio video synch

Here’s an On This Date in History that some folks might like⦠I traded 2 tapes with a guy who came up to me at Gilman and asked if I traded video. 2 trades and that was it. I didn’t really know his full name, I think his first name was Mike.
Anyway, he is the one who provided the 2nd angle of Op Ivy’s last show that allowed for a 2 camera edit. His camera was also much better in low light, which helped a lot at Gilman.
This might have been the last time the band played berk square. They were opening for 7 Seconds here. Audio is distorted but picture is clear.

Here is a video from the first time I filmed Bliss, opening for Vomit Launch. We had seen them up in Nevada City a while before this, but they left a great impression. They were sac’s resident SST sounding band, right down to Brandon’s Greg Ginn style Plexi guitar. Filmed with Aiwa CV80 and stock mic. We have a soundboard tape of the show, so if anyone wants to synch them, let me know!

I heard Vomit Launch for the first time, opening a Stewart Katz show- it may have been a 7 seconds show in late 1986 and I liked them immediately. I think that this was their first Sacramento appearance after I bought my camera- back in the Clint/Jeff O’Toole/Greg Dean promoter gap between Stewart and Brian & Jerry.
I took my master and brightened it and de-noised it, then added “Anonymous”‘s audio, courtesy of an Aiwa handheld recorder with stock mic? Or it may have been a Sony ECM909 at this point. Anyway, it sounded better than my stock mic.

***NOTE: Forward the video to about 10min for soundboard audio***
I saw Bliss open up that drunken AVM show in August of 1988 and was hooked immediately- they were reminiscent of the more obscure SST stuff like Abecedarians, Always August, etc. Brandon even had the Greg Ginn style clear plexi guitar!
Me and “Anonymous” went to Club Me (pre cattle club) to check Bliss and Vomit Launch out. We got the OK to do a soundboard.
My friend Sam (Thehappyone on youtube) did the audio synch on these. It is not easy to synch multiple analog sources. Thank you.

Finally, today’s On This Date in History. This one was not quite as good as I remembered. Recording a multitrack mix live is a big challenge- I did it quite a bit in the late 90s and early 00’s. It is easy to peak channels without realizing it, especially if the band is loud in the club. It’s not bad, it’s just not as fantastic as I recall.
I was surprised that this wasn’t out there on YT or live music archive- taper friendly band. I guess this 3rd gen cassette will need to do.

My friend Gary Shurtleff let me know that this was just posted, and I have a funny story about this show. I *really* wanted to tape the show, but I did not have a decent audio recorder at the time. I borrowed my friend’s (anonymous) crappy audio recorder and snuck it in. While I was taping metallica, I got busted by the usher. She grabbed me firmly by the arm and walked me down to the main security. They took my recorder, but I pocketed the tape before I gave it up. I got the tape home and it was complete distortion.
So yesterday, a listenable recording of the same show pops up. I have no idea who taped it- it doesn’t sound like a Karl Lundmark tape. But here you go- Metallica on the AJFA tour.
Man, I could have sworn that this was a Cattle Club show, but I guess not. This was kind of a funny story- I always asked permission from the bands to film back then. At this show, I had gotten to know the promoter pretty well so he goes up to Joey introduces me and kind of “tells” him that I am videotaping. Joey had this “who the hell is this kid” look on his face. Classic!
