Uncle Tupelo- Cicero’s, St. Louis Mo. 8/25/89 Soundboard xfer from band archive tape

This soundboard mix is probably the best mix out of all of the cicero’s shows. Unfortunately, it cuts at 90min. Photo is from closing night of the old basement location of Cicero’s- Jay Farrar made a surprise appearance with Brian Henneman and the Bottlerockets.

Uncle Tupelo- Cicero’s, St. Louis Mo. 6/30/89 Xfer from Soundboard Band Archive Audiocassette

This show is probably the most legendary of all of the Uncle Tupelo archive tapes. Like I mentioned before, Cicero’s was Uncle Tupelo’s “home base” in the late 80s, and they were famous (notorious) for drunken performances back then. This was rumored to be the pinnacle of great, drunken performances from back then. I mean, just check out that setlist! (setlist courtesy of the excellent factorybelt.net website).

And I know that this is a pic of The Old 97s, but it was the only one that I could find that showed the stage of the original Cicero’s.

Uncle Tupelo- Blue Note, Columbia Mo 8/22/88 xfer from band archive audio tape Soundboard

This was one of my favorite shows from Tony’s archive. They must have thought it was good as well- they used a few songs from this for one of their first demo tapes “Live and Otherwise”.
Great mix, and incredible covers.

Uncle Tupelo- Lincoln Theater Belleville Il 1988 Transfer f/best available VHS tape Complete Covers

Here is the other early Uncle Tupelo show on that VHS tape from yesterday, and it is a fun one! Chris Constance(Pants Elderly) posted 4 of the 15 songs from the show, but this appears to be the first time that the entire set is up on youtube.. and it was transferred with the lossless setup so it’s as good as it’s gonna get… Unless we find a better VHS copy.

The band does many of their early songs but they also mixed in covers by KISS, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, CCR, and Skynyrd… yup, Skynyrd. CLASSIC show. I can’t remember the source- Jim and/or Michael, do you know? I do remember getting it as close to the master as possible.

Fun fact (to me at least): The theater is still open- it opened in 1921 and is believed to be haunted!

Uncle Tupelo- French Village Drive In, E St Louis Mo 7/87 transfer from best available VHS tape

It’s time for the Patreon Voter’s Choice! As with most Uncle Tupelo tapes, there is a story behind this one.

Chris Constance was an old friend who was early into digitizing videos onto DVD. Back when we were still trading VHS tapes, he was digitizing my (and other) tapes and sharing them with the postcard mailing list. He was also an early youtuber and clips from this and other videos are online. Chris passed in 2014 of brain cancer. It happened so fast, it was shocking. It is also shocking that he has been gone 12 years now. RIP Chris.

Chris already digitized a similar quality copy of this and uploaded to youtube on his “pantselderly” channel, but his version was low resolution. Here is a similar quality, higher resolution version here. I will also post another early UT video within a week that was also on this tape, and that full version is not on youtube! Woo hoo.

Uncle Tupelo- Corner Tavern, Edwardsville Il. 6/30/87 xfer from 2nd gen VHS tape FULL SHOW

I think most of you know that I have a mountain of stuff to post and not enough time to post often enough. I had a pile of Groovie Ghoulies stuff to do, but then I decided to check my alt country videos against youtube.. and I was shocked that a lot of the OLD uncle tupelo stuff that Jim Utz helped get from the source had not been posted to YT. Odd. There is only 1 song posted in YT from this show, here is the full show. This is the first show billed as Uncle Tupelo, opening for Das Damen. It’s super dark and the sound is not the best, but it is the lowest gen available… unless Jim can track down that 1st gen VHS again, that we dubbed back in the 90s. 🙂

Primatives- Mississippi Nights St. Louis Mo 7/28/86 Pre Uncle Tupelo Proshot Live Jeff Tweedy Farrar

I was surprised to see that this is not up on youtube… at least I couldn’t find it. When I filmed Uncle Tupelo’s last show ever at Mississippi Nights, I met a nice couple (Tom and Mary I think?). They are relatives of Mike Heidorn and they asked for my contact info. I ended up sending them a VHS copy of the last show, since Mike played during the encore… and I thought that was the end of it. Then, out of nowhere, they sent me this box of old UT articles and stuff… and in the box was this VHS tape of the Primatives playing on St. Louis Cable- KDHX.
The Primatives(that is really how they spelled it) were Jeff/Jay/Mike, with Jay’s brother Wade Farrar on lead vocals. They do a lot of early/garage rock type covers, but the first one is an original and fans may recognize it.
Oh, this is probably a 1st gen VHS tape transfer. I think they recorded it off cable.

Setlist (courtesy of factorybelt.net site w/1 small correction): Smoking Gun/ I’m Talking About You/ Diddy Wah Diddy/ Dirty Water/ Primitive/ No Different/ instrumental/ Surprise Surprise/ I Just Want to Make Love To You/ ?/ Gloria/ Psycho/ I’m So Glad
