Slayer- Wellington’s, Winnipeg Canada 10/24/84 xfer f/ master audio cassette Thrash Metal Kerry King

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday!
Last month, I posted the first night of Slayer’s residency at Wellington’s in 1984. Here is night 2. The photo comes from Doug and is of Slayer playing at Wellington’s.
The audio is a bit tinny, but it is super clean and clear sounding. These shows are legendary- a quote in the liner notes for Hell Awaits has a reference to a worker from this hotel/venue.

Slayer- Wellington’s, Winnipeg Canada 10/23/84 xfer f/ master audio cassette rebalanced Thrash Metal

Another Doug tape today- a Slayer show to honor Jeff on the date of his passing. Hard to believe it has been 11 years already. I think that Jeff even yells to Doug for a drink at about the 13:30 mark on this recording. It’s one of the band asking…
The Verbal Abuse Welington’s opening set was well-circulated in trading circles in the 80s, but I was not aware that they were opening for Slayer. These recordings are so clean that the Verbal Abuse was misrepresented as a board tape back then. Hopefully the EQ and rebalance will help these recordings out a bit- I like how it sounds.

Slayer- CKLN Interview, Toronto Canada 10/23/84 xfer from 1st/low gen audio cassette thrash metal

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! And I just realized that I don’t have much from Doug prepared to post today. I need to get back on the prep work.
Here is one that is from Doug’s collection, but I don’t think he taped it. He probably got it from the taper. This one is longer than the version that is out there on Youtube today. It includes some post-interview music from the DJ, and just wow- what a playlist. I sure wish we had something like this in Sacramento back then. I would have become a DIscharge fan much sooner if I heard this!
Interview is incoherent and littered with F-bombs. Beautiful.

Slayer- Stone, San Francisco Ca 10/16/84 xfer from master audio cassette Thrash Metal Kerry King

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! Aaand it’s another 1st album Slayer show that he taped himself. What a time to be alive! Look at that lineup as well- 1st album Trouble with 1st album Slayer. Unfortunately, it looks like only the Slayer set was in the TMD box. Thanks Doug!

Audio Live Concert

Slayer- Keystone, Palo Alto Ca 10/15/84 xfer from master audio cassette thrash metal

It’s Wednesday and there have been no Doug posts yet this week- let’s fix that. This Slayer show goes to prove that even the greats play to an empty room sometimes. I am sure that it being a Monday night in Palo Alto didn’t help things much. Sounds like there are less than 100 people there. They still mowed through the set as usual, but damn. Tough crowd.
Thanks to Wayne Vanderkuil for finding this pink sheets listing for the show, no flyer seems to exist. Maybe THAT’s why nobody showed up…

Slayer- Hell Awaits Rough Mixes 1984 xfer from band audio cassette copy Thrash Metal

More awesome stuff from Doug. The one thing that pops to mind about this one is when we talked to Tom about the recording of this album while hanging backstage in 1985-86 time frame. He was poking fun at the low-budget recording techniques and he mentioned that he recorded the vocals for this album in a bathroom. Listening to the vocals here (which sound pretty different to me) reminds me of that conversation.

Audio Demo

Slayer- Live Undead Rough Mix, Tiki Recording Studio, New York 1984 xfer from master audio cassette

Since all I have seen on my timeline for the past day is SLAYER REUNION, I figured I would join in the fun and post this one from TM Doug’s archives.
I think all Slayer fans know by now that this was not recorded during a live concert. They played live in a New York studio with about a dozen people in attendance, who won entry through a radio station contest.
This tape is definitely a rough mix of that session. It sounds like Doug popped a tape into the board without any mixing being done at all– sounds like a live soundboard tape. Cool to hear it like this!

Audio Live Performance

Slayer- Country Club, Reseda Ca 9/1/84 xfer from master audio cassette

Here’s the second(and last) one from Tour Manager Doug for the week.
This recording has not been posted/circulated to my knowledge. There is a document of the show on Youtube, but it is a grainy video suffering from generation loss. That’s where I got this image to use- I could not find a flyer.
I not only pushed the EQ as much as I could in Sound Forge on this one, but I also took that result and ran it through Izotope Rx8. I hope it doesn’t sound overprocessed and weird. Sounded ok to me.

Slayer- Old Monterey Music Hall, Monterey Ca 7/16/84 xfer from master audio cassette thrash metal

It’s Thursday- time for the last audio post for the week, and it is another TM Doug Slayer show. How many times did Doug tape Slayer? A shit load. The answer is a shit load.
You might be wondering why there is a colorful children’s museum(next to a massage parlor) being used as the youtube photo for this one. I found a flyer online and if you look at the super small print, it seems that this is close to where the Old Monterey Music Hall used to be. Go figure. I wonder how many times I have unknowingly walked past a long-gone classic venue like this one.
This one is on the “very good” part of the Doug recording spectrum. Nice bass and clarity of instruments.

Slayer- The Stone, San Francisco Ca 7/13/84 xfer from master cassette Thrash Metal

Here’s another amazing recording from tour manager DOUG (not Mark, what the hell was I thinking?)… a nice sounding show from mid-84, on the bill with Laaz Rockit and Lizzy Borden!
The Stone always had nice sound- I think it was because just about every surface in that place was carpeted. This show was so clean that the EQ made it sound pretty damned nice. Thanks DOUG!
