Slayer- Ruthie’s Inn, Berkeley Ca 12/31/84 audience recording xfer from master cassette thrash metal

It’s tour manager Doug Tuesday! I have a migraine and the meds are making it hard to hold up my head, so I’ll make this quick. There is a well-circulated board tape from this same date, but that setlist seems to be incomplete. This show opens with Chemical Warfare, then Aggressive Perfector/Face the Slayer etc. I guess this is the complete show while the board tape is partial.

Last audio post for the week is another Doug classic set. Ripping set from them, on their first swing back east- I will be posting their first show ever in New York sometime soon!
Who bought a ticket to Aftershock on Thursday just to see them? (raises hand). Should be awesome, and hopefully I won’t get clobbered like I did the last time I saw them. It screwed up/broke my camera!

Slayer- L’amour, Brooklyn NY 11/10/84 xfer f/ Master audio cassette Thrash Metal Full Complete Show

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! Man, what a strange week this is. There seems to be nobody doing their usual things in Sacramento- nobody at Costco on Sunday afternoon and a spontaneous walkin (and walked right in) to Escape Room after work yesterday. I think everyone took the week off and got the hell out of this, well, hell. 11 straight days of 105+ degree weather here. A new record. Kill me.
Anyway, I can’t think of anything more fun than thrashing around to Slayer in the 110 degree heat. Here is one of Doug’s tapes from that Fall 1984 run of shows. This one was super tinny, I did what I could with it. It sounds alright. Thanks Doug!

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! I know I promised a different week of content this week, but one thing will continue until we run out of stuff– TM Doug Tuesday.
Man, I love this flyer. It looks like a flyer to a party, and it looks a lot like a flyer that Christian Devine made for me when I had a party with bands, back in 1982 or 83, at my Dad’s house in Citrus Heights. We even got a keg! Man, times were different back then.

Slayer- Joe’s Fun House, Farmingdale NJ 11/7/84 xfer from master audio cassette No Vocals

Since Slayer is playing their first show in Sacramento in over 6 years tonight, I thought we could celebrate by posting a really cool, rare Slayer recording from Tour Manager Doug’s collection.
It has been generally agreed that Thrash started in Northern California and was centered around the scene at Ruthie’s Inn and other small to midsize clubs in the bay area. But on the east coast, there was a group of maniacs who were starting their own thrash scene called the Old Bridge Militia. There is a ton of great info about their history at old bridge militia dot org website- you should check it out, it’s a great read and this next excerpt (and photo for this post) comes from there:

“In the autumn of 1984, Slayer was doing an in-store signing, which these days would be considered a meet and greet, at Rock n Roll Heaven after Jonny had just closed down his old store in the East Brunswick Flea Market, and opened up a bigger one in Clarke, New Jersey. Our friend Brian Nyers was managing the store at the time so we took a trip up there. We were having a conversation with Tom Araya and Metal Joe asked him where they were staying. He said he didn’t know and Joe told him Metallica had stayed with us a few months ago and they were welcome to do the same. With very few options, they wrote down the address and we left not knowing whether or not they would show up. But, hours later we were in the yard at Joe’s house, when a U-Haul truck pulled in to the driveway, followed by a Camaro. Two of our other friends, Reb Synder and Tommy Jessup, were also there that night having a target practice in Joe’s backyard with their shot guns. As the Slayer guys pulled in, a crow flew over the house and they shot it down and it landed right in front of the U-Haul. Welcome to New Jersey guys.
Again, they were just a bunch of young musicians that loved their metal and traveling from California to the East Coast to play some shows and get some recognition. While they were here, Joe took a ride with them to Tiki Studios in New York to record Live Undead. They came down to Old Bridge to our DJ night and hung out with everybody and had a blast. The next night they were supposed to play at The Union Jack’s in South River, but when we got to the venue, they made them leave because they were not of age to be in the Club. Annoyed Joe said, “Let’s have our own private concert!”, and took the equipment back to his house and they played for us down in the basement. The album Hell Awaits hadn’t been released yet, but they played most of it for us that night.”

So this is the recording from that night. There was no P.A., so no vocals. It doesn’t seem to be circulated at all (cue Laurent from Snakepit to tell me “I have had it for 40 years lol”) and I had no idea there were ANY recordings from this legendary house.
As an added bonus, Doug was kind enough to share some additional photos from that night that are on the website that accompanies this YT channel (sacramentomusicarchive dot com)- head over there and check them out- photos of Jeff playing drums and Dave playing bass, and a photo of the Old Bridge Militia crew with Slayer!

Doug followed up with this info- in the group photo, there is:
Top: Kevin Reed, Tom, don’t know, Jeff, Kerry, Johnny Araya
Bottom: Joe (fun house proprietor), Dave, TM Doug

Back to the audio on Monday- another rarity from Tour Manager Doug’s collection. Sounds like they were still working through some of those Hell Awaits songs on this tape, even though they recorded the album a couple months prior to this. Very cool, thanks Doug!

I’m a little late with the post today because this Win 7 dinosaur of a PC was acting up- it acts like it burns a blu ray, but when you check the disc, it’s blank. At least I was able to ID it real-time and after multiple burn tests and reboots, back in biz.
It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! Since there is an unbelievable amount of Slayer in his collection, let’s get at least 1 slayer show up per week for the next.. let’s see.. 12 weeks or so. That will land us right around the time that they play Aftershock.
This one appears to be uncirculated. When I usually look up a Doug tape, there is some hissy/inferior quality version of it online somewhere. Not this one, and I had never even heard of this club. It seems to be your typical 80s Metal club- everything from Thrash to Hair and all in between.
This one cleaned up alright- it was super tinny but EQ did the job this time.

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! OK, I just made that up but it does have a nice ring to it.
This one was a tough one to prep. I was able to get most of the distortion out of the source by dropping the mids/highs, but doing that buried Tom’s vocals in the mix. I went to the old standby Izotope Rx8 to bring up vocals, and the bass a bit.

It’s Tour Manager Doug Thursday! I am having one hell of a time signing in to youtube on my desktop pc, so I am typing this out on my phone. Man, I hate using my phone for stuff like this. anyway, here is yet another Slayer show from Doug on that Fall 84 run back east. I still have a lot of slayer to post- trying to get them all up before Slayer’s show here in October.

It’s not a week unless we post a Slayer show from Doug. I found this gem of a picture while I was checking online for a photo or flyer from the show- that’s Doug behind Kerry, holding the Sony Walkman WM-R2. That’s a pretty cool find- thanks to the photographer Ihor Hirak for capturing not only Slayer, but Doug and the recorder.
I am currently digitizing the rest of the sets from this canada run- including opening bands- some great stuff upcoming.
