Shonen Knife- El Dorado Saloon, Sacramento Ca. 4/10/97 xfer from DAT Soundboard Master Rebalanced

Thanks to Brian Mckenna for the flyer image, it got me motivated to transfer the DAT of this show.
A somewhat funny story behind this one- I asked the soundman for permission to tape and he said “sure, as long as you don’t have a DAT”. Uhhh… luckily, I had the Marantz PMD430 in the backseat of the car. At this point, the Marantz deck was 10 years old and not really functional anymore. I think I lined the board feed into the marantz, and then out into my DAT which was hiding in my gear bag. Odd but effective, and it explains the cut at about 41:00 into the show.
I rebalanced it (maybe a little too much on the guitar) and it sounds pretty full.

Shonen Knife- “In USA” Japanese TV Documentary 10/12/94 xfer from master VHS Tape Live Interview

Here’s the last post from Japanese TV- an hour-long special documenting Shonen Knife’s tour of America in 1994. A lot of it is in Japanese, but there are some cool behind the scenes clips of TV appearances and stuff. Good for people who know Japanese and who like the song Tomatohead, because you’re gonna hear it about 100 times.
Saki taped this off of TV and sent me the master.

Shonen Knife- Lollapalooza, Cal State Dominguez Hills 9/5/94 xfer DAT Master Audio Nakamichi CM300

TLDR version: Forward to 3 minutes if you want to hear how it really sounds.

People were asking for more posts from this show, so I guess I’ll keep it rolling. After the Green Day set, we headed over to the 2nd stage for 2 bands- this was the first. I think I was more excited about the 2nd stage bands than the main stage ones- I was a huge Shonen Knife fan at this point and had never seen them.
As you can tell, the sound quality on the 2nd stage was different. Smaller area/smaller PA so the audio much clearer but not much low end. This one is muffled for the first 3 minutes or so since they started right when we got over there and my mic was buried under the flannel. After the set, I headed over to the TAANG! records tent and got my DAT case signed by the band. Cool 🙂

Shonen Knife- Inkstick Factory, Tokyo Japan 6/22/91 xfer from DAT Clone Complete Show

Here is a quick one for today’s On This Date in History. What a day. I will probably make a tab on the ol’ website to poke fun at these last 24 hours sometime soon.
But enough vagueposting. I got this one from my old friend Saki Honma- I met her at Uncle Tupelo’s last show at Mississippi Night, and then we traded DATs for a few years until we lost touch. She got this from the taper as a DAT clone, then cloned it for me.
The recording is clear but thin. It lacked bass so I used Izotope Rx8 to bring the bass up A LOT. The odd thing is that the bass is in the mix (and a little too loud) during the first song, then drops out. I wonder if the bass player was having an issue.
Anyway, a nice EARLY recording on the eve of what I think was their first US tour. They played CBGB in 1990, but I don’t think that one was a full blown tour.
