Doug Sahm- Galaxy Concert Theatre, Santa Ana Ca. 5/24/95 Audio xfer from Master DAT West Side Horns

A couple of months back my fb friend Johnny Rodriguez was talking about how much he loved Texas Tornadoes, and it prompted me to pull the DAT out of the time I got to see them while I lived in So Cal.
Doug Sahm and his band opened up the show with an “All-San Antonio Band” that includes the West Texas Horns. Nice set and this one sounds better than the Tornadoes set that I’ll post tomorrow.

Texas Tornados- Galaxy Concert Theatre, Santa Ana Ca. 5/24/95 from DAT Master Tape Freddy Fender

Here’s the only time I got to see the Texas Tornados. Johnny Rodriguez’ post from a couple months back prompted me to pull this out and digitize it. Great show, even if the recording is a bit boomy and distant. I have seen so many great shows at that venue under a few different names- Johnny Cash/Uncle Tupelo when it was called Rhythm Concert Cafe, this show and Wilco in May of 95, and then the 1984/crucifix show in 2014 when it was the Observatory. I even saw a show there in 2020- the TSOL 40th anniversary show. The one thing in common with all of those shows is that security is a huge pain in the ass there. Giant thugs who hate cameras must come with the building or something.

Johnny Cash- Rhythm Cafe, Santa Ana Ca 2/27/93 xfer from DAT Master Nakamichi CM300 Mic Complete set

Here is a fun one for On This Day in History. My memory is a bit hazy on this. I remember that Uncle Tupelo had a number of tour dates scheduled for southern California in February of 1993. They played Bogart’s in Long Beach, The Palomino in N Hollywood and The Casbah in San Diego. I think this one was a late addition- they got an opening slot for Johnny Cash at the Rhythm Cafe. I remember Tony M telling me that he REALLY wants a tape of the show, but he can’t help me at all in getting my gear in.
So I head over to Santa Ana- I have never been to the venue before. Turns out it is a dinner theater type of place and a band is already playing. I think there might have been an early and late show and the band was JC’s first set. I remember panicking, thinking I missed the show.
They let us in after a bit and I was able to sneak in the DAT, a microphone, and 2 battery packs. No video. They seat me at a table and the entire crowd is SUPER old. This was before Johnny teamed up with Rick Rubin so it was a bunch of 60+ people and me. I remembered the older gentleman across from me falling asleep during JC’s set.
Tupelo were great- a 22 minute set heavy on March 16-20 stuff and other acoustic songs. The crowd didn’t hate them, so that’s a win. That show is already up on the archive.
There was a LOT of hootin’ and hollerin’ early in the set, but then folks tired out and it sounds much better later on.
The venue later changed their name to Galaxy Concert Theater and I saw Texas Tornados and Wilco there in 1995. It is now The Observatory.
I also have about 10min of John Carter’s opening set if people want to hear it.

Uncle Tupelo- Rhythm Cafe, Santa Ana Ca 2/27/93 Acoustic set DAT Master opening for Johnny Cash

Did I ever tell you about the time that I saw Uncle Tupelo play a 22 minute opening set for Johnny Cash? It was at this club called Rhythm Cafe in Santa Ana, which then became Galaxy Concert Theater and is now The Observatory.I was seated at a table with 3 other people. Luckily, the table was at the front of one of the levels that the club has, and I was in the front seat of the table.. so I could just put my mic on the wall, pointing at the stage. Sounds pretty damned good.
This was before Johnny Cash had released anything on American Recordings, so only the old die-hard fans from the early days were at the show. Still a good crowd, but they were a bit older (I think the average age was about 60) and they did not know what to think of UT’s aggressive style, even though UT were playing an acoustic set. Sounds like they won some people over.
PS: They started abruptly, so I hit record and it took me about 30 seconds to pull the mic out and set it up. So the 1st 30 seconds isn’t so great.
