Mr. T Experience- Portsmouth, NH 6/27/95 xfer from audio cassette MTX Dr. Frank Lookout Records

Alright, this migraine is in day 2 now. This suucks. You get a 2-fer from Jason Ross today- 1 audio and 1 video. It was a total coincidence that this happened, and that it happened on a Tuesday. I cycle through the excel spreadsheet over here, working my way down the list and then start at the top again for both audio and video. Today it’s all Jason.

The first one is an audience recording from MTX on tour for my favorite album of theirs. The recording was very clear and had plenty of high end but lacked bass. Sounds like a TCD-D3 tape with standard clip on mic to me. I EQ’d it best I could, but it still lacks bass. It’s enjoyable I think.

Audio Live Concert

Mr. T Experience- Kalx live in Studio, Berkeley Ca 12/30/94 xfer from master Pre-FM cassette MTX

I met up with Rick Arroyo last weekend and he dropped off a bunch of KALX cassettes and reels- most are in studio performances and station ID’s by musicians from the mid-90s. At first glance, it looks like there is a lot of duplication between the cassettes and reels- I think that they ran a recording on a reel along with a cassette as a backup copy… and it’s a good thing that they did a cassette for this one, because the reel fell off the machine during MTX’ set!
MTX did a full hour-long set here along with some funny banter in between songs w/the DJ. Sounds like this was one of Joel’s first performances with the band. There are also some very funny station ID’s after this on the tape but there is a LOT of annoying clicking on the cassette, so I need to Izotope that one before handing it over to KALX. There was also either a big blob of white stuff or missing oxide on side B, so I had to use the 670zx to get it to transfer.
Speaking of KALX, I’m tagging all the KALX DJ’s I know. Happy to share an upload link/photos or whatever for their archives. Let me know!
Thanks Rick.

Mr. T Experience- Joiners Arms, Southampton England 8/7/92 xfer f/band archive VHS MTX East Bay Punk

Here is a CLASSIC show from Aaron Rubin’s collection of MTX VHS tapes from his time in the band. Thanks Aaron!

I am totally perplexed as to why I didn’t personally transfer this one. I had the ability to transfer PAL tapes with a high end deck. I think this one might have had some difficulty playing back since it was so old. Thanks to local transfer house Videolab for the help here. It might be worth another try if Aaron wants to give me another shot.

Mr. T Experience- Cattle Club, Sacramento Ca. 7/12/91 xfer from DAT Soundboard Master Rebalance MTX

Onward with the DAT transfers. This one is DAT #2- a soundboard recording of Mr. T Experience at Cattle in 1991. I never really gave this show a proper listen because there was very little guitar, bass or drums in the mix. Luckily, Izotope was able to fix the mix and make it listenable. Usually when you adjust a mix this much in Izotope, it starts to sound funny but this one cooperated pretty well.

MTX Mr. T Experience- Cybelles Pizza, El Cerrito 6/29/91 xfer from master VHS tape Enhanced

Late Saturday post for you with another one from Rodney Parker’s collection. This one cuts at 9min- that’s all that exists of the MTX set from this night. The video was very dark- I had to crank the brightness to 100 to get something to show. I like Rodney’s filming perch, up above all the heads.

Mt. T Experience- Cybelle’s Pizza, El Cerrito 6/29/91 re-xfer from master VHS tape Enhanced MTX

I debated about whether I should post this one from Rodney Parker’s collection of master tapes he loaned me, but what the heck. You can see Jon Von and Frank a little better than my original post a while back.

I followed the same approach that I took on that Green Day video from Rodney’s graduation party- virtualdub has the ability to adjust brightness and contrast at the source, so that’s what I did. I cranked up the brightness, adjusted contrast BEFORE the capture and then did the work in adobe. Sure, it looks a bit like 1980s night vision security footage, but still, you can actually see them.

Mr. T Experience- WFMU Live in Studio, E Orange NJ 5/4/89 Xfer f/1st gen audio cassette MTX Dr Frank

Sorry, I am in brain fog today. In order to get my old ass through filming 6 bands with 2 cameras at Punk in the Park, I had to hit up the energy gum.. which always gives me this dull brain the next day. It’s like drinking monster but in terrible tasting gum. I’m really selling it! I should be a spokesperson.

Today’s On This Date is History was an easy choice. I was checking the list for any cool things that happened on 5/4 and this one popped out. I got it from the taper and it’s not online, so I assume it’s uncirculated. I love this era of the band- Jon Von was a force and his songs were goofy and fun. Just listen to What is Punk from the broadcast (or album) and you’ll hear it.

Mr T Experience- Anti-Club Hollywood Ca 11/25/88 xfer f/unknown gen audio cassette complete show MTX

Hey, someone else told me what to do! Mann Medic just signed up and asked for this MTX show. It was their first show ever in Los Angeles. It’s an audience recording but sounds pretty good. Probably done with a Sony D6 or some other quality piece of gear.

Frank Portman adds: “A memorable night, at least I think I remember it. The recording is new to me, sounds surprisingly good. Astonished to find the unfinished and never released “TV Movie” song (at around 21:50) — surprised we ever played it in public (if the Anti Club counts as “public.”) It’s too long at two minutes, probably best left unreleased, but to my surprise it has its moments.”

Thanks Mann Medic!

Mr. T Experience- Aggie Hotel, Davis Ca. 10/22/88 xfer from master tape!

This continues the project of posting videos from as many old sacramento area venues as possible. I tried taping at the Aggie a couple of times, but this is the only one that turned out somewhat watchable. I tried videotaping Screaming Trees in there, but there was basically no lighting. Was this place a legal venue? It seemed sketchy. Filmed with the Aiwa CV80 and stock mic. Audio is pretty awful- sorry about that.
