Dinosaur Jr.- Kennel Club, San Francisco Ca 2/4/91 xfer f/ master cassette Marantz PMD430 Nak CM300

I pulled a pretty good one for today’s On This Day in History, I think. For a short time, I had a really nice analog audio taping setup. I bought a used/demo Marantz PMD430 from Circuit City (it is like a Sony D5- the nicest portable cassette recorder) and 2 Nakamichi CM300 mics. Some of the tapes from this time frame turned out really nice- in fact, I had a youtube commenter ask me if the Siouxsie show from lollapalooza was a soundboard.. nope, not even close.
Dinosaur Jr. Played a show in SF in early 1991. It was a Monday night, so we expected it to be not too crowded- the 1989 show had a decent amount of people but not a ton. We get there late and the place is PACKED. I was only able to squeeze in front of the bar toward the back of the venue.
The show sounds ok. The CM300 is a shotgun mic which is intended to be held still on a stand, but I had to hand hold it, which is why this has an odd swirling sound. I was able to use Izotope to boost guitar and vocals, and I am pretty happy with it now.

Monks of Doom- Kennel Club, San Francisco Ca. 7/25/90 xfer from 8mm master enhanced

The kennel had those psychedelic light show guys at a lot of their shows in 1990. It’s cool to see, but it makes the stage darker. I was finally able to enhance this one so it is a bit more watchable. Greg was super dark before.

Enhanced with Adobe Premiere (Exposure/brightness) and denoised with neat video.

Mudhoney- Kennel Club, San Francisco Ca. 7/17/90 Xfer from 8mm Master Enhanced

The Kennel would sometimes bring in a psychedelic light show group to project their show behind the band. It was cool, but the band played in near darkness except for the light show. These videos were close to unwatchable before because they were so dark. They are much better now that we can brighten & enhance them.

Monks of Doom- Kennel Club, San Francisco Ca 1/17/90 VIDEO

Hi, here is my master video of Monks of Doom from Kennel in 1990. This was a crazy night. I caught a ride from promoter Brian McKenna’s brother and they ended up going to a park after the show to hang out and I did not get home until 5am. Work the next day was awesome. Anyway, I have always loved the earlier Monks stuff the most so this one gets upped first, for Mr. Joe Burns.

This is part 1, you can search the title on youtube to see the rest of the show.

Johnny Thunders- Kennel Club, San Francisco Ca 10/24/89 xfer from 1st gen cassette

OK, I had very little sleep and a 6am conference call. I have about 15min to kill before getting the kids ready to school so let’s see how many of these I can post.
Here is a Johnny Thunders recording done with my equipment back in 1989. It’s not too bad considering the Kennel Club’s (now called The Independent) acoustics.

The Fluid- Kennel Club, San Francisco Ca 9/26/89 xfer f/ 8mm master Videotape Sub Pop Records Grunge

Here is the first of 2 Patreon Voter’s Choice selections in a row. The always tasteful, on point patrons picked not one, but TWO of my master videos from 35+ years ago. And this one has a story…

The bill was The Fluid/Dinosaur Jr. I got the OK to film The Fluid and you see that set here. I tried talking to J before the Dino Jr set and it was impossible to have a cohesive conversation with him. I was desperately trying to ask permission to video but it was impossible. So I put my camera back in my bag. UGH. I should have just filmed the damned show.

These have never been posted because the videos were so dark, you could not see anything. Thanks to lossless transfers and the ability to adjust exposure and brightness at the source in virtualdub, you can now actually see the band perform. Same with the one tomorrow.

Oh, and my hearing loss? Motorhead at the Oasis in 1985 destroyed it, but filming shows like this just finished it off. Poor ears.

Btw, that is probably the coolest YT thumbnail I have ever created

Dinosaur Jr- Kennel Club, San Francisco Ca. 9/26/89 xfer frmo D6 Master Audio Tape

Thanks to Daniel Hague for getting me to look through Anonymous’ stack of tapes and finding this one. I know Dan is a big fan. This doesn’t sound as good as some of Anonymous’ other recordings with this setup, but Dino Jr always played LOUD and the kennel club was never known for their acoustics.

A funny side note about this show- I was there with my video camera and I was trying to approach Jay so I could get permission to film. I tried to start a conversation, but it was so impossibly awkward and incoherent, I gave up. Damnit, I should have just whipped it out and recorded anyway.

Short Dogs Grow- Kennel Club, San Francisco Ca 2/7/89 xfer from master videotape Live

I figured I would take a break from all the Aftershock videos. I need a palette cleanse after so much punk & metal. This should do it.
This was the first time seeing Short Dogs Grow. I traded for a live board tape from Gilman in early 1987 and became a big fan. By the time I saw them, their sound had refined more into the straight rock direction… I know they lost some of the old punk fans at this point but I still loved the band.
This show is kinda funny- I think this is the first time I videotaped at Kennel and I did not realize I could film from the perch above the door, so this one is shot on stage. The original camera audio is beyond awful, so I took a recording made with a consumer Aiwa deck and EQ’d that one. I don’t remember this, but it seems that I left my (actually anonymous’) deck with a random stranger. Thanks for not stealing it!

Rollins Band- Kennel Club, San Francisco Ca 4/29/88 xfer from master audio tape

I saw this tape in Wayne Vanderkuil’s box of tapes and had never seen/heard it anywhere before. I didn’t know until after I digitized this, that Wayne taped it. It was one of the last shows that he recorded.
Rollins claims that this is the first time that the band played in California. I know that they practiced and formed back east- New Jersey I think. That’s some pretty cool history. Thanks Wayne!
This is a killer set. It seems like they played longer than usual- this cuts at 90 minutes!

Recorded by: Wayne Vanderkuil- I think he used a Sony WMD3 in later years

Donner Party- Kennel Club, San Francisco Ca 8/5/87 xfer band archive VHS tape-MiniDV Quasi Heatmiser

Today’s On This Date in History took about 7 hours to process, believe it or not.

Melanie Clarin (Donner Party, SF Seals, Harm farm, Yard Sale etc) was very kind in loaning me Donner Party’s VHS tapes back in the late 90s. Since there was no good way to digitize video back then, I lined the VCR into a miniDV camcorder so I could at least stop the generation loss of a VHS dub. I eventually authored it to a DVD years later.

If you are unaware of Donner Party, they were one of the jewels of the late 80s San Francisco “alternative before it had the name” scene. I absolutely love the band and Sam/Melanie’s harmonies. Sam Coomes moved to the pacific northwest after the band dissolved and started a number of bands (including Heatmiser with Elliott Smith) and is currently leads the band Quasi. Unfortunately, the board mix on this is not great so seek out their released material for a better representation.

Speaking of released material, it looks like the 1st Donner Party LP (Cryptovision Records) was reissued with bonus demo tracks recently. I need to get me one of those. Someone please let me know when they appear in the US.
