After the Destroy Boys set, I had to hustle over to the Coors Light stage for Death Angel. I knew that the stage was in this little bottom part of the festival grounds, but I had no idea that it was about a 10 minute walk. I made that walk 6 times on Thursday, and the set schedule is so tight that you can’t watch the end of a set at one stage and make it to the start of the set at the other. I missed the start of this set, and only filmed 1 complete set out of the 5 that day.
Also, even though I was very appreciative of this extra fest day with bands I really wanted to see, it was obvious that the Coors Light stage was not meant to be used after dark. The lighting was terrible and my camera couldn’t handle it- it was a focus nightmare the entire time. Sorry in advance. Coors light stage was just like the beer- weak and sh*tty. This was the only one that turned out decent because the sun hadn’t set yet.

Death Angel- Cattle Club, Sacramento 5/29/89 xfer from 1st gen Audio Tape

This one has a story- usually, when a band would not allow me to film at Cattle Club, I would leave the venue (the bands usually wanted the camera man and the camera OUT OF THERE). When Death Angel told me no, I turned on my camcorder, kept it in the bag, and popped my Sony ECM909 mic just outside of the bag and snuck an audio recording of the show. The manager kept walking by, giving me the stink eye and I was all innocent. Haha. Not the best recording but at least one exists.

Death Angel- Stone, San Francisco Ca 12/28/88 xfer from master audio cassette Sony WMD3 Thrash Metal

This one comes from another collection that I have had here for quite a while but have not digitized anything in years. I think that last one was that NOFX Gilman 1988 soundboard. Thanks for the patience, Gary! His VHS videos are also being digitzed- some good stuff in there.
Doing these tapes got me talking to Gary, and unbeknownst to me, he was taping with a pro walkman in 1988. That was even before Anonymous 1 and I got ours (1989)!. He taped some really nice sounding shows that I’ll be popping up here in the coming months.
I figured I would start with this one, since DA is playing their annual Christmas shows this weekend. This one sounds really good for the time- there is some light tape damage so the first 3 minutes suffer from some wow/flutter/warble. Once the high end kicks in, it’s smooth sailing.

Death Angel- Mabuhay Gardens, San Francisco Ca 6/6/87 Xfer f/ Master VHS Tape Enhanced Thrash Metal

Here is a really cool one from Chris Eng’s collection- an apparently uncirculated Death Angel video from 1987! They played with Condemned Attitude – what a great lineup. The show took place just 6 weeks after the release of their debut LP, The Ultraviolence. Most of us had the demos of some of the tracks for years, but this was their first full length.
I would definitely pay the $3 for this show.
