This video kinda bummed me out. This show was packed and they were amazing… but since my Sony TR81 camcorder tends to have lousy audio, I decided to plug in my coresound mics in to the camera… BAD IDEA. The camera was not made for the mics so it was even more distorted. You can still make out the songs, so here you go.
Here is a cool one from Dal Basi’s tape collection. Man, I love D.I.- they have been one of the only bands who hooked me on first listen (horse bites dog cries) in 1986 and have been with me ever since. They were one of the first punk bands I ever taped (El Dorado Saloon 1/10/87), the first band I ever recorded on DAT (Cattle Club 6/30/91), and one of the first multicams I attempted in 2013. So great that they are still at it. This show comes from the same tape (and taper) who taped the Moist Berkeley Square and Offspring Gilman shows, and it sounds similar. Sounds like a Sony D3 deck to me. Nice and clear but thin.

I started a new project while working from home- digitizing my DAT masters and DATs that are uncirculated. Here is DAT #1. This is the first show I ever recorded on DAT. As soon as portable DAT machines’ price point dropped below $1000, I grabbed one. I got the Sony TCD-D3 shipped to work on 6/28/91 and wasted no time going to a show to try it out that weekend. I am so glad that D.I. happened to be playing, as they are one of my all-time favorite bands. Great long set which includes covers by Devo, Gary Glitter and The Ramones. Eric Bianchi did a great job with the mix- the guitar and bass were slightly low but everything was there and the mix was consistent. I was able to rebalance this in Isotope and bring up the instruments and drop the vocals a bit. Mix sounds great now- thanks Eric!

Here’s a tape that jumped out at my from Jason Ross’ collection. I am a big DI fan, so I figured I would pop this one in and listen while working. It is a decent audience recording done with an Aiwa HS-J15 and a custom mic. It sounds a bit like a Sony Pro Walkman D3 recording. I caught DI in June of this year and they were playing a very similar set.

This is an odd one in 2 ways. Even though D.I. opened for C.O.C., this is tacked onto the end of the tape AFTER COC… which means that “Anonymous” might have copied his master to the COC tape, making this a 1st gen. hmmm… Also, D.I. is in the rarest of forms here. When they played El Dorado Saloon back in January of 1987, the crowd LOVED them and they played an amazing set. Here we are 8 months later and they get into shouting matches with the crowd. Odd. Casey is usually funny and affable as a frontman… must have been an off night.

Here’s one from Wayne Vanderkuil’s collection. Actually, it seemed like we(bay area tape traders) all traded for this tape, but it isn’t clear who has the master. Wayne’s tape is on the best quality tape out of the bunch (TDK SA-X90) and has the least hiss, so we’ll go with this. This is pretty good for an early Gilman mix, but the mix does fluctuate throughout. There is no snare for most of the show, so I pushed that up. Vocals were buried for a stretch, so up those went as well. Sounds ok I guess. And, check out that calendar- D.I. wasn’t initially booked for this date. Must have been a late add since they were playing Sacramento around the same time.

Oh wow, it’s Monday already. You know what that means- another episode of Mediocre Monday! This is from the last show as last Monday’s post, and it does not sound great. This was back before we had good equipment, and this recorder could not handle the volume. As for the show, it was a memorable one for me. I was a huge D.I. fan at the time (still am) and this was my first time seeing them, and (I think) their first time in Sacramento. It was the original classic lineup with Casey/Rikk/Alfie etc. Not only that, but they were opening for Social D and they played for over an hour! What a treat. I hope you can enjoy it despite the quality.
