Here is one requested by Matt Hargrove- Jason Molina made a stop at the Fire Escape in Citrus Heights, a day after performing at The Fillmore in SF. That must be strange for artists to go from large venues in SF to tiny ones here. I remember Anonymous telling me that Jason cut his set short because it was extremely hot and stuffy in the club.

Man, I loved the Haints as much as the Ghoulies. I only got to see them play once. It was at a massive cluster-f St. Patricks Day party at a bar in Citrus Heights. Odd venue but a great set. Taped with a pro mini-DV camcorder (Panasonic AGDVC30) but the nice mic I used (Shure VP-88) had a custom cable wired incorrectly by Sweetwater. Beware of Sweetwater, y’all.

I have been meaning to fix this one up for a while. Since it was St. Patrick’s day, the club decided to make the lights on the band ALL GREEN which I am sure seemed funny at the time, but did not make for good video. The audio in the original version was lacking since I was behind the PA, plus I was using the mic that was wired wrong. Luckily my best friend Anonymous was there with his (now MY) DPA 4061 mic rig so it sounds much better too. This was my last time seeing the 3 groovie ghoulies perform together. It makes me a little sad to see this, but thankful to have seen them so much… plus this Haints set is awesome. Anonymous also recorded The Haints’ set a month later at Capitol Bowl in West Sacramento.

I hope I got this one right. This show was not well lit so I tried to match it up with a show on the concert archives site. I think I got it right. From Cory Wiegert’s collection. There were too many member changes to figure out who played when, so you get it in a lump.
I have a glut of video to post, so you get video on a Friday. Here’s something you will either find totally boring or totally fascinating. I had this idea to get some studio footage and use it for a promo video (kind of like Iron Maiden’s Flight of Icarus promo) but it never went anywhere. Guitars and drums were tracked in the same room- crazy. Inner ear studio was a little garage studio in the suburbs. I wish I remembered where it was exactly. I think it is in between San Juan ave and Mariposa somewhere. It’s all a blur. My favorite part is when Parisi needs to duct tape the headphones to his head to keep them from falling off. Pure gold!

So, back in 1983, Motley Crue blessed our humble little Record Factory (the one by Sunrise Mall, now a Nation’s Hamburgers) with their presence. My cousin Tony Schwartz & I worked with the guys at Record Factory to bring in my uncle’s video camera (one of the ones that had the camera & the VCR to record as separate components, and made people see-thru when they moved) to film the signing. This is the lowest gen available- the master was lost.
Highlights:
– Seeing the inside of record factory. I bought so many metal records there in the early 80s.
– Seeing the crowd. it looks like heavy metal parking lot in here.
– seeing the first guy in line (with his crue gloves) being impossibly stoked at meeting the band
and… getting shut down by the band’s management. Oh well, it would have been boring to watch them sign autographs for an hour.

PS: I tried posting this the other day and it was blocked because it had Motley Crue’s music on the video. I jumped through Youtube’s “music removal tool” hoops, waited, and it was still blocked. So I thought I’d do something fun. Instead of listen to The Crue wank away, I curated an audio track of some of my favorite underground metal that was released in 1983.
The audio soundtrack is:
1. Loudness- In the Mirror
2. Exciter- Heavy Metal Maniac
3. Jag Panzer- Battle Zones
4. Savatage- Sirens (cut).
Enjoy.
