Matthew Sweet- Tower Records, Chicago Il. 8/24/95 Live in-store Audio Only WXRT-FM xfer from master

After 8.5 hours straight of meetings today, I finally get a break.
I kinda blew my wad on the cool archival video stuff early this week, so you get audio for a few days. Man, I love Matthew Sweet. He always seems to get lumped into the “90s alternative” bucket of bands, but all I hear is a great songwriter. Killer power pop.
This is an in-store concert broadcast broadcast on WXRT in Chicago, who were probably the best station in the country for live broadcasts back then. I hope they are still relevant, and didn’t go the route of KROQ.

Audio Live Performance

Alex Chilton- Double Door, Chicago Il 4/27/95 xfer from DAT Master or clone Big Star Box Tops

I have not posted anything related to my “trolling ebay for stuff” hobby for months, so here’s one for you. It’s also gives folks a short break from the endless stream of classic/thrash metal (doug), gilman punk tapes (eggplant), and local bay area bands on KALX(Rick) that will continue for the foreseeable future.
This one seems to be a master or clone of the master tape. This seller had a bunch of DATs with Chicago/Indianapolis stuff AND he was based in Chicago so he was clearly close to the taper, if not THE taper.
The tape is pretty representative of a mid-90s DAT, recorded with Sonic Studios or coresound mics. Lots of bass-heavy stuff came out of that era. This one sounds pretty good, and my friend Ross Weyman (who has more Chilton than I have ever seen) tells me that this show is not circulated. Cool.
Sorry for that pic- I need to up my phone pic taking game apparently.

Can’t remember if EQ’d this one. I think I might have EQ’d some bass out and mids up.

Audio Live Concert

NAR- Fireside Bowl, Chicago Il 11/22/94 xfer from 8mm master Sacramento Punk Very Small Records

Happy Mothers Day to all moms out there! We are getting close to the end of the NAR November 1994 tour videos. Here is a show that I had seen on video, but from a different handheld source. This is the best picture quality of them all- I didn’t even need to degrain this one.

Lemonheads- Taste of Chicago, Grant Park, Chicago Il. 7/4/94 xfer from 1st gen VHS w/Sbd audio Enhan

Aw, I didn’t realize that today was Paul Baloff’s birthday. Search the archive for all of those newly-posted Doug-recorded Exodus tapes to honor him. The one I posted this week rips.
It’s video Friday- here is one that I spent way too much time prepping. This comes from Ross Weyman’s box of VHS tapes that he sent last month. He also sent me the NICE Sounding WXRT FM broadcast off of a DAT master tape. So I transfer the VHS and tried to synch the FM… and the encore won’t synch. No idea why, pluraleyes just won’t do it. You get 52min of great audio and 4min of average camera audio. Camera is nice and steady after a couple of minutes of instability.
This was my favorite era of the band- I saw this tour at the (crappy) SOMA live in San Diego and it sounded awful in there, so it is nice to put this one together. Thanks Ross!

J Church- Crawlspace, Chicago Il 5/27/94 xfer f/1st gen VHS tape Lance Hahn Punk

This one is from Jason Ross’ collection and I bet that it was another Byrne Brothers video. It looks like one and it is from the right time frame. This one is already on YT but this is better quality and better resolution, so here it is.

Citizen Fish- Fireside Bowl, Chicago Il 4/14/94 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape punk ska dick lucas

For today’s On This Date in History, we have a video from Citizen Fish. I think this might be a Byrne Brothers production, not sure. I picked it because I am seeing Dick Lucas perform in person for the first time ever this coming Friday. That’s right, I am super lame and have never seen any of Dick’s bands. I even have a DAT Master soundboard of CF from El Dorado Saloon that someone taped for me with my DAT deck.

Spitboy- Fireside Bowl, Chicago Il. 4/14/94 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape live East Bay Punk

I know it is a little early for the daily post, but I did not sleep much due to election anxiety. I was looking through the rest of the “Turn it Around Project” videos for the most appropriate video to post today (election day), and I think I found it. Here is a killer video of Spitboy at fireside bowl. Man, I love it when a video captures the essence of the show, and this one does so in a big way.

Live Concert Video

Ne’er Do Wells- No Palace Studios, Chicago Il. 10/9/93 xfer from 1st gen VHS Tape Green Day Hi-Fives

For today’s On this Date in history, I learned about this Lookout Records supergroup. The Ne’er Do Wells had John Kiffmeyer/Al Sobrante on drums (Green Day, Isocracy, etc), Chris Imlay and John Denery from the Hi-Fives etc on guitars/vocals, and Jesse Hillyard on bass. They put out 2 releases in 1993 and that was it.

This comes from Jason Ross’ collection. Most likely filmed by the Byrne Brothers. I saw a podcast/youtube stream of the brothers and it sounds like they want their stuff digitized and put in one place. I’m RIGHT HERE. Reach out anytime. haha.

UPDATE: Additional info from Chris Imlay: “Neat! For the record, John Denery couldn’t make the Ne’er-do-Wells (and Thee Shatners) tour, so al, Jess and I (Chris) were joined by Paul Curran who was a friend of the band, and a famous East Bay creative person in his own right. That’s Paul playing without singing. He played in TONS of great bands including Crimpshrine and Go Sailor. I don’t remember playing this show…feels like a bunch of technical difficulties and talking with some “musical” interludes haha. The story Al tells about us being extras on the “Little Big League” film is true, by the way.”

Los Crudos- Daily Plaza Center, Chicago Il 7/17/93 xfer from low/1st gen VHS tape Political Punk

I was all ready to post a Chubbies video from Jim Utz’ collection for today’s On This Date in History, only to discover that this is the 17th, not the 18th. Whoops! Here is a video shot by Jason Ross and transferred from his master tape. I did this with my old digitizing setup a few years ago, so no 1080p and no enhancements. Still better than the 240p generated one on youtube now.

Jawbreaker- Izabel’s, Chicago Il 5/23/93 xfer f/1st gen VHS tape Punk Band Blake Schwarzenbach

It’s time for the Patreon voter’s choice for last week! This one is yet another video filmed by the Byrne brothers and is from Jason Ross’ collection. This club appears to be tiny, it reminds me of the Cattle Club. Bob or Mike was right on top of Chris since there was no place to go.
