M.D.C.- Cafe Colonial, Sacramento 2/8/24 4K UHD Multicam with Rode Video Pro Stereo Millions of Dead

Late post today. Man, am I tired. Very physically demanding day.
MDC came to town a few weeks back on a stacked bill. If you have not seen them lately, they are worth seeing. The new songs are great, Dave sounds much better now that he can hear (in ear monitor) and the band is tight.
The lighting in the cafe gave one of my lenses fits- it kept losing focus due to the lighting, so apologies for that. Just try to imagine that it is a special effect. Related to that, I am looking for a good micro 4/3 f2.8 panasonic lens, if you know of any deals.
I could not get the multitrack set up in time, I could not get there early enough. You get rode audio, as it was better than the Schoeps.

Mob Rule- Cafe Colonial, Sacramento Ca. 2/8/24 4K Panasonic GH5S UHD master

The last post of “locals only” weekend comes from the band Mob Rule. They have been around for quite a while, but play shows rarely. If you like what you hear, they are playing TONIGHT at Old Ironsides with Rebel Holcrons and Cracked Lids. Head on out!
Mob Rule released a 7″ in 2016 and a 10″ EP in 2020. Jordan Wolfe(bass/backing vocals) was in well-known Sacramento band Final Summation.
I had a very hard time keeping focus with the lens I used- it is not light sensitive enough for the Cafe. I am working on buying another F2.8 lens to deal with it. Camera loses focus quite a bit until I figured it out. Also, the schoeps recording was so bass heavy that I opted to use the cheap/generic mic that I used on this camera (the rode was mounted on the wall camera).. and it sounds thin but not all that bad. Go figure.

Class of 77- Cafe Colonial, Sacramento Ca 2/8/24 4K UHD w/ Schoeps CCM4 audio

Since I have actually been out video recording some shows recently, I’ll post some of the opening sets from local and regional bands who played over the past couple weeks.
First up is Class of ’77. The band has members of other well-known bands from the 80s and 90s, including Carmela Thompson (Short Dogs Grow and many others), Chelsea Rose (White Trash Debutantes, Bite). The band had a sun/interesting concept- they play old punk covers along with a couple of their original songs.
Unfortunately, I missed about the first 5 minutes of the set. I grabbed a random GH5S and it happened to be one I had not used before and the settings were all jacked up. It does sound nice- the schoeps did a nice job on this set.

Adrenalin O.D.- Punk Rock Museum Tour, Las Vegas NV 1/12/24 4K Master Hardcore OD Partial

I wasn’t planning on posting this (ever) because it was a pretty tough weekend, but I was cleaning off the RAID and decided to do so to honor my friend Richard.
I booked a trip to Las Vegas to see the Punk Rock Museum and meet up with my friends Dave and Jack from the band. I was also looking forward to seeing my old friend Richard Brown- his parents used to run Arjay Rock in the 1980s/1990s and we have been friends ever since. I had not seen him in about 10 years, when he lived in Portland and I was on a business trip up there.
After I booked the trip, it was announced that my daughter was playing a all-city concert at a local high school on Jan 13.. I figured that I could still make this work since the tour was on Friday, my daughter’s performance was on Saturday, and AOD’s mini-concert in the garage at the PRM was Sunday. So I booked ANOTHER round trip ticket LAS-SMF-LAS so I could go see her performance on Saturday. I pulled it off with very little sleep and made it to her performance. After her show was all done, she ignored me- would not speak to me. Teenagers…
To add insult to injury, I discovered that schedules at PRM are not set in stone, and it kinda revolves around Fat Mike’s schedules or whims.. and they ended up playing on Saturday. I missed the performance. Mike had a busy schedule and moved the performance time to suit his needs. I wasn’t even going to come back, but I had a rental car parked in the airport parking garage, so I kinda had to..
I am glad I did head back, because I was able to spend a good part of Sunday with Richard and his daughter Jasmine. Richard had been sick with a skin cancer but was able to make it out to both the tour and the Sunday hang. Richard passed away in June so spending that day with him meant a lot. I hope his daughter is doing well- Richard and his daughter were very close. It makes me so sad every time I think about it.
You can see Richard in the video- I spotted him at 11:00 in the grey jacket, his daughter has the Descendents hat on.
Anyway, sorry to be such a downer, Dave and Jack do a nice tour guide job. Lots of inside info on the east coast bands including the misfits. This is 23 minutes of a TWO AND A HALF HOUR tour. That Dave guy can talk!

7 Seconds- Neck Of The Woods, San Francisco, CA 12/2/23 4K UHD Multicam with Rode Audio

A couple of nights after filming the 7 Seconds Harlow’s show (which is up on Jim McLain’s youtube channel- check it out), I headed to SF to see this show. I had never been to Neck of the Woods before, so I had no idea what to expect. The venue was in an usual area for a venue- over by the Presidio, in a predominantly Asian area. It was pretty small (smaller than Harlow’s) and had very good sound(thanks Otto)… but all of main stage lighting lit the bands from behind. That is a recipe for disaster for video, and I happened to be shooting directly into the light. We tried to enhance/shadow correct the angle, but it just made the band glow like they were angelic for something… so we used the raw footage. If you see the photo used for my Facebook post, you can see how extreme the backlight is (thanks to Nolan Erck for the photo).
I also realized that I forgot my pole mounts about an hour into my drive to SF, so I was extra bummed to see 3 large posts at the venue – they would have been perfect for a camera mount. Huge thanks to Maurice Turrieta for helping with 2nd camera (a camera he never used before) to shoot most of the show handheld.
The best part of the show was the crowd- this was probably the most lively crowd I have seen at a 7 Seconds show in about 10 years. Lots of younger fans came out, as it was all ages and the openers were mostly younger bands. It was great to see. You will see my angle panned further back than usual because 1- I could not reach my lens since the camera was WAY up there and 2- the crowd was so active, I didn’t want to miss shooting the action.
Thanks to Kev, Steve, Bobby and Sammy for continuing to welcome this obsessive hobby.

7 Seconds- Harlow’s, Sacramento Ca 11/30/23 4K UHD Multicam with Matrix audio

Here is the other “anchor camera-less” show that we edited together. If you want the full 6 or 7 camera edit in HD, head on over to Jim McLain’s page and check it out. If you want 4K resoultion, here you go.
This was such a great show. I saw 5 7 Seconds shows in Texas in Sep of 2022 since it seemed like they would never play Sac. I was expecting the same setlist and was totally surprised with “Sister”, “Trust” and “Busy Little People”. Trust was the only one that was played, albeit rarely, in 2022. The sold-out crowd was very active- in fact, I had to stand WAY back, next to the soundboard with my monopod on a cocktail table just to get decent elevation. That goodness for my lanc cable to control pan and zoom up there. This was probably my favorite 7 seconds show since they got back together.

Knockoffs- Harlow’s, Sacramento Ca 11/30/23 4K UHD Multicam with Matrix Audio

These next 2 video posts will not look like one of the usual 4k multicams that we do. I filmed with 1 camera (G60) and 3 gopro’s on stage, then handed them over to Jim McLain to edit an HD multicam from all of his & my angles. My G60 angle is more of an isolation shot, so I don’t have a 4k angle that shows the entire stage like I typically have… so you will see a lot of closeups and gopro angles in this one. Bobby knocked over the gopro on his side like immediately, so it’s just one gopro on Danny, one on Bear, and my iso shot. Thanks to Tromster for making it work in the edit. If you want the full multicam edit in HD, head over to McLain’s channel. If you want 4K, here it is. 🙂
And a call back to the Go National post earlier this week, The Knockoffs do my favorite Go National song- Aqua Dirty. I had not seen them do this since 2000!

Losers- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 11/26/23 Bay area? punk band

I was archiving my footage the other day and realized that I have this footage that I shot while setting up the ladder cam for the POAC/Annihilation Time show. The band is called Losers, and I know nothing about them other than this 4min of footage.
I checked through ths first page of about 20 “losers” bands on discogs and none of them matched their description. If you know anything, let me know.

Thanks Sarah Creamer for the info- the band is from the bay area and are: JERJ-DRUMS ANDREW-GUITAR ETHAN-VOX-STEVE-BASS

Smokers- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 11/26/23 4K UHD Multicam with Multitrack Audio Nuisance Drunk Horse

I figured I would wait until the football games were over before posting today.
I need to admit I had no idea who Smokers were and they just happened to be playing in between Planet on a Chain and Annihilation Time so I kept the cameras rolling.. I just looked them up to see who they were…
Well, holy sh*t I’m an idiot. This is Andy Asp (from legendary lookout band Nuisance) on guitar and vocals. Also features Cyrus Comiskey from drunk horse and others on bass… I think. He was on the recorded material. So glad I fell into taping this one!
They have a 7″ and a demo tape and other stuff at their intuitively named bandcamp page.

Planet on a Chain- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 11/26/23 5 cam UHD 4K Multicam with Multitrack Audio POAC

One of the openers for that Annihilation Time show was Planet on a Chain. They are from the bay area, so I have caught them a couple of times now. They put out some 7″s on small/self-released labels, and then they were signed to hardcore behemoths Relativity Records. I had a quick chat while buying merch and getting permission to video, and we were joking about them “hitting the big time”. Haha.
Anyway, by friend Tromster loves the band and this edit reflects that. The multitrack mix came out really nice as well. This could be the best sounding Gilman video since that Jawbreaker 2018 show, and one of the best video edits so far from the venue. I wish they could all turn out this good. The new lighting kinda messes with the gopros, otherwise perfect.
