Horny Mormons- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 10/16/92 xfer from master soundboard tape Sacramento Punk

Let’s keep it an all-Sacramento day today. This one is from Ken Doose’s collection. Ken has the most comprehensive early Sacramento punk tape collection. Hundreds of tapes to digitize. This is tape #2.

Horny Mormons were a Sac punk band who played many shows with Pounded Clown. In fact, the 2 bands have a split LP on Very Small Records. Members were Chris Woodhouse, Jay Onyskin, Mike Cinciripino, Mike Kellog. Mike Sea Pig on drums for this show.

With most soundboard tapes, drums and vocals are usually prominent. The opposite was the case here vocals were a bit buried and drums were not loud enough. I rebalanced it in Izotope, but The mix chnages so I hope I didn’t make it worse.

Rebalanced in Izotope Rx8: Vocal +5, Drums +4.

Pounded Clown- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 10/16/92 xfer from 1st gen Soundboard Cassette Sewer Trout

This one is a lot of fun to listen to. Pounded Clown are/were a Sacramento band featuring Dave Downey, Hal Maclean(Sewer Trout), Mike Kellogg, Ed Hunter and a host of other folks. I don’t know if this has the full 3 piece brass section that was on the record, but there is horn in the mix. Speaking of the mix, these later Gilman mixes are great- my only complaint is that Dave’s vocals are a little low for a couple songs. Otherwise perfect- it’s amazing that you can hear all of it in the mix.
The band released one split LP (w/Horny Mormons) on Very Small Records and a few 7″.

Sonic Youth-Agora Ballroom, Cleveland Oh. 10/14/92 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape incomplete

Todays’ On This Date in History is later than usual because I had my first MRI ever. What an ordeal- 3 hours at that place, laying on my stomach in a tube for 40min with my wrist out in front of me. Blah.

Anyway, this one comes from Jim Utz’ collection. He met a person (name forgotten) who videotaped a bunch of Sonic Youth’s 1995 shows. am not sure if a complete version exists- even Sonic Youth’s website shows the documentation as incomplete.

Meat Puppets- McCabes Guitar Shop, Santa Monica Ca. 10/3/92 Xfer from DAT Soundboard Master

There was a window of about 10 months between moving to L.A. in 8/92 and my first child being born. I went to a lot of shows in that time- Midwest to see Uncle Tupelo 5 times, Uncle Tupelo again in Socal in Feb of 93, and a ton of local shows. I think this was the first time I went to McCabes. Davo (MP Soundman) did a great job with the mix- the room is small and they were a bit loud if I remember correctly.

Meat Puppets- McCabes Guitar Shop, Santa Monica 10/3/92 Early xfer from Hi8 Video w/Enhance Sbd

Man, this was a lot of work to prepare but totally worth it. I am really happy with the end result. I should have boosted the audio a little more, otherwise all good.
btw, there are at least 20 (and maybe up to 100) OLD 1988-2000ish videos where I can give the same treatment (enhance video, remix audio, synch new audio track to video)
I had moved down to L.A. (Whittier) about 2 months before this. This was the first time I was at Mccabes I think.

Meat Puppets- Mccabe’s Guitar Shop, Santa Monica Ca 10/2/92 DAT Master Xfer Nakamichi CM300 Mic

Wow, this one sounds pretty damned good. It was a little light on the bass so I bumped it up in EQ. This was the first show of 3 at McCabe’s that week- this one on Friday, and then 2 sets on Saturday. I did not even know of the Sunday show at Raji’s until I got a cassette of it later- it’s probably best since I would have killed myself going to yet another show…
