Stikky – 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca. 4/15/88 Transer from Soundboard Master Cassette

This is bizarre- This stikky song is on the master soundboard tape, right after No Use for a Name. Stikky were not listed on the flyer as playing on 4/15/88, but Chris was there with NUFAN I think. Maybe the band hopped up on stage and played a song on NUFAN’s equipment. Maybe this is from a diffrent show. Who knows.

No Use for a Name- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca. 4/15/88 xfer from soundboard master cassette

The Shurtleff onslaught continues. This one sounds great- it seems that they really got the mixes dialed in at Gilman around the April 88 time frame.

I think Chris Dodge was singing for the band at this time. I filmed them a week before this and he was on vocals.

Operation Ivy- Chicago, Il 4/10/88 xfer from low gen audio tape, audio only

Late post today- the lookout zoomout took more free time than I had today, but it was totally worth it!
Here’s another one that Todd Pritchard pulled out from Jason Ross’ collection when he was here in December of 2019. I thought that we (me and Anonymous) had all of the Operation Ivy audio tapes that were recorded, but Jason has a bunch of uncirculated stuff out of the midwest. This one doesn’t sound great, it is a typical punk rock audience tape made on non-professional gear. I tried to remix it to make it a little more listenable.

Danzig- City Gardens, Trenton NJ 4/9/88 Audio only xfer from 1st gen cassette FIRST SHOW EVER

Carl Sylvester asked me to digitize this one a few months back, and it finally got to the top of the list. I traded with a really cool and dependable guy named George Norton (not sure if my FB friend is the same guy). He taped a ton of city gardens & NYC punk/hardcore shows.
He taped Danzig’s first show at City Gardens and sent me a copy pretty much immediately. We listened to it about 50 times before the debut LP came out 4 months later. Good times. Note the track listing on the cassette J-card, we didn’t even know the name of most of the new songs yet.

Attitude- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca. 4/8/88 xfer from soundboard master cassette

Here’s another one from Gary Shurtleff.
This is one of the better gilman soundboard mixes I have heard, but it is a little bright… and Andy is hilarious as usual. I forgot that they stopped advertising bands at Gilman for a while. The concept was that people should just show up and be surprised. They started flyering again when no one was showing up. Andy’s opening wisecrack is GOLD.

Red Hot Chili Peppers- Danceteria, Sacramento Ca 4/6/88 xfer f/Master Audio cassette Anon 2 version

HUGE thanks to Angelo Bertini for Telling Me What to Do! Angelo told me to digitize this RHCP show and by golly, I did it. If you want to tell me what to do, check the patreon link in comments.

Believe it or not, BOTH of our anonymous contributors to the archive taped this show, and neither recording ever circulated in trading circles. This is Anonymous 2’s version, which cleaned up pretty nicely after a dramatic EQ job.

Danzig- WTSR-FM Interview w/Randy Now, Trenton NJ 4/5/88 1st int as Danzig the band

I wasn’t planning to post this today, but Randy Now (legendary booking agent of City Gardens) asked me for it. We all owe people like Randy and Sacramento’s own Stewart Katz a huge debt of gratitude. They were the promoters who found venues and booked punk bands into those venues back when no one else would, which “trailblazed” a circuit of clubs that allowed bands like Black Flag, D.O.A., DKs and others to tour the United States in the very early 1980’s. And Randy did all of this on top of being a mail carrier during the day!
In this interview, Randy mentions that Glenn had not done an interview for a long time. I assume this is the first interview as the band Danzig. Randy also booked Danzig(the band)’s first show ever at City Gardens the next month, in May of 1988. You can find that City Gardens set on sacramento music archive as well.
Now, if Glenn would just pick up the damned phone…

Frightwig- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 4/2/88 xfer f/? gen VHS tape San Francisco Punk

It’s time for the weekly Patreon Voter’s Choice! This was the second week of “Pick a Gilman Video” but the available bands to vote on (starting letters E through M) were so obscure, I hadn’t even heard of a couple of them! Our patrons picked the one that I would have picked myself- they have impeccable taste as usual. If you want to join the patreon, I’ll add the link below. It’s only $2.50 a week to vote. Next week’s poll will be “pick one of my favorite “A” DVDs”, since the ol’ tape transfer setup is in the hospital. Haha.
