It looks like there will be a parade of bonus posts for the next week or so. Some are Patreon thank-you’s, some are re-do’s of VHS transfers that had audio issues. This is the latter- Audio was totally blown out on this post from a couple weeks back, and my pluraleyes synch did not work. So here it is again with proper, in synch original audio.

Let’s Active- Hoosier Ballroom 9/18/86 xfer from low gen VHS tape Mitch Easter

Here’s one from Phil Go/Tony Philputt’s collection that is already on YT but not in this quality. I think Tony’s tape is either a master or 1st gen VHS because it is super clean, but the audio was totally messed up through both shows on the tape I have. Luckily, the lesser quality show that is on YT had decent audio, so I ripped that, EQ’d out as much distortion as possible, and synched it with this video. That’s a LOT of work for the 100 or so views this will get, haha. It was worth the work.

Kilslug- The Rat, Boston Ma. 9/17/86 xfer from 1st gen audio tape Dirge Upsidedown Cross Adolf Satan

For those unfamiliar with the genius of Kilslug, I have a story for you.
Back in the 80s, we had no internet to give us instant music recommendations. I was a big fan of Ron Quintana’s Metal Mania zine and would pay close attention to their record reviews. They reviewed Kilslug’s “Answer the Call” and called it “Death Death Metal”. I was like, holy shit, how heavy can this be? So I bought it and brought it home…. and I was like “What the fuck is this SHIT?”. It was this dirge of noise and Larry Lifeless’ wailing about being a worm and stuff. Over time, I forced myself to listen to it because I spent money on it… and I started to like it. I have been a fan ever since.
In the early 90s, I found a cassette trader with a bunch of Kilslug master audio recordings so I snagged them all. It looks like only 1 or 2 are on YT so far, so you all get to be abused with Kislug the rest of the week.
Listen to the “Answer the Call” album for the properly recorded versions of these songs.

Ramones- El Dorado Saloon, Sacramento Ca. 9/14/86 Audio Recording xfer from master or 1st gen

My friend Agelos asked me to start transferring some of the old cassettes in the archive for him, so I decided to post the ones that are significant to Sacramento or Bay Area. Here is a Ramones tape from el dorado. Picture courtesy of John Muheim, recorded by Mark Martin. This is from the master or 1st gen tape. Recorded with a consumer panasonic recorder- this is by no means professional quality! I hope you can still enjoy it, despite the flaws.

Inside Out- Graystone, Detroit Mi 9/13/86 re-xfer from master beta tape Enhanced Russ Gibb Archive

Sorry for all the posts today- kind of a long story. That last one (Beatles) from Todd Nakamine’s collection was blocked worldwide, so I deleted it and will try another one of Todd’s later this evening.

This is one of Russ Gibb’s beta tapes that I transferred back in 2022, but since then I was able to use some better equipment to re-transfer so here you go. No more horizontal white lines across the screen! This is not the Zack Delarocha fronted hardcore band. Here is more info, courtesy of discogs:

“Inside Out (Detroit USA) are an all-female power trio who formed in 1985, and specialised in a brand of hardcore punk / grunge / psychedelia in the vein of female grunge bands such as Babes in Toyland and L7. They released a number of singles in the period 1990 – 93, along with 2 LPs. The singles were on Meantime Records, Icon Records and Anti-Music Records. The LPs were both released by Meantime Records. The band also recorded a Peel Session for Radio 1 DJ John Peel.”

It would be cool to hear that peel session.

This was also on the Government Issue tape. I was hoping that this was Zack De La Rocha from Rage Against the Machine’s early hardcore band. I was wondering if they made it out to Detroit… alas, this is not that Inside Out. Here’s what Discogs has to say about this Inside Out band:

Government Issue- Graystone, Detroit Mi. 9/13/86 lossless xfer from master beta tape enhanced

Here is another one from the Russ Gibb archive. I bought a hi-band super beta machine from Japan to play these (and other tapes) back. I start with this tape and the machine dies after playing the tape. The tape is stuck in the unit and this is all I have to show for it. Shout out to the Ebay seller for taking care of the problem. I just received the same model (US version) yesterday, so the beta transfer party will continue.
Anyway, this is just amazing footage of GI. The only downside is that they played so loud, you can’t hear Stabb’s vocals from the stage. The cameraman moves to the back of the room at the end of the set and it sounds much better. They keep losing power to the stage as well. Typical punk show.

Annihilation- Rock on Broadway, San Francisco 9/12/86 xfer from low gen VHS tape Thrash Metal MITFR

Here is an incredibly cool one from Chris Eng’s collection. Chris is not sure where he got this one, but it clearly very low gen. I would guess that it is off the master or 1st gen, but we don’t know, so “low gen” it is. The audio is pretty badly distorted.
Annihilation was one of those bay area thrash bands who only released some demos and not much else. One of those specialty labels released a CD of their demos later on. A couple members went on to form Taunted, who had a release on Mausoleum records.

D.R.I.- Club Can’t Tell, Sacramento Ca. 9/8/86 xfer from master audio cassette

This is going to be long. So, I went to this show with Matt Polish. In the 1984-1987 time frame, I was a mess. When I would hang out with Matt, we were like the Wonder Twins of debauchery.
I was the hugest DRI fan at the time. I knew every word to every song off the first 2 albums. Kurt saw me singing and gave me the mic during “nursing home blues”- I sang the “got no wife” line. Yes, you can’t hear me because I didn’t know how to sing into a mic. D’oh.
So Matt finds some of the guys from Cactus Liquors and has me pull my car behind the CCT, into a parking space in the alley. We go out to my car and start drinking tequila and talking about ToT and their new band. I have never had tequila before and I am trying to look cool to the band, so I drink WAY TOO MUCH. I pass out in the drivers seat of my car and Matt goes to hang out with Kurt.
I hear a tapping on my window later on. It’s a cop, waking me up. Shit. So I tell him I need to find my friend. I am holding myself up with the side of the alley, hoping to find Matt. I see him with Kurt right at the backstage door outside so I start yelling at Kurt. “KURT! KUUURT! Why do the vocals on Plastique sound different than the rest of the album?”. Kurt said that no one had ever asked him before and he goes into this big explanation about multitracking, stereo effects and delays while I wander away drunk. Matt could not believe this was happening.
He drives us home, and while we are in the drive through of Jack in the Box on Harding in Roseville, I lose my dinner. Matt: “Dude, did you have spaghetti for dinner?”. Yes, you dick.
The next thing I remember I am in my car. Sunlight is in my face and my nose is packed full of puke, and I have the worst hangover ever. I still went to work.
So, I never even knew a riot happened and I only caught the first part of the Discharge spectacle… but I was there. Kinda.
It’s amazing that the cop did not arrest my 19 year old ass for public intoxication. I guess he was busy enough that night. Also happy to not choke on my puke while sleeping.

EDIT: Matt tells me that we were in the car with Josh (bass from DRI), but I remember Tales of Terror guys.
