Sacrilege B.C. – Ruthie’s Inn, Berkeley Ca. 12/26/85 Audio only xfer low gen audiotape Thrash Metal

I was asked to digitize a Violent Coercion demo (which kicks ass btw), and there were a couple of Sacrilege Ruthies shows on the tape as well. These were received in trade in 1986- I don’t have a record of who recorded the show, but this is likely a copy right off the master. Non-professional recording equipment was used, so the quality isn’t great.
I don’t have a flyer image for this show, so you get a pic of the Ruthie’s location as it looks today. Hey, maybe someone can rent out the hall and recreate one of these classic bills!

Megadeth- Oasis Ballroom, Sacramento Ca. 12/22/85 xfer from master or 1st gen audio tape

I meant to post this yesterday but Jesse Davis came over to transfer a Umatic tape and much wackiness ensued. It kinda turned into a party.
This post is for Bobby Jordan- he asked for it. He actually wanted video, but video before 1988 is pretty rare around Sac. The quality of this is better than I remembered. I had it rated very low on my tape list but it is shockingly listenable. I think the nak dragon played through the damaged tape.

Thin White Rope- Studio Z, KPFK Los Angeles Ca. 12/21/85 xfer f/1st gen audio cassette Soundboard-FM

I got this one from the guy who taped it off the radio in L.A… He told me that it included 20 minutes of material that did not make the Spin Radio Broadcast, but after checking the transcription LP track list and length(which I also own), that doesn’t seem to be the case. This is 34 minutes long, the Spin LP is 28-29min. So there will be a bit extra here, but not significant.

I definitely need to digitize the LPs with my setup as well.

The Replacements- Fender’s Ballroom, Long Beach Ca 12/13/85 xfer f/1st gen audio cassette

This is another one that surprised me by not being online anywhere from what I can tell. I don’t think this one came to me in a trade. It is on a DAT that I got on a trade from Alton Purvis, but it seems that someone brought the 1st gen cassette to me and I dubbed it up to the blank space at the end of the tape. This one was done with my OLD mid-90s setup.

Fans of the band know that their performances were unpredictable. They were definitely ON for this one. Even the reviewer was impressed. Cuts at 90, as does the master I believe.

I wonder how the taper snuck the huge deck into these taper hostile clubs.

Crumbsuckers- CBGB, NYC 12/8/85 xfer low gen soundboard cassette rebalanced Kirk Hammett Metallica

In my 37+ years of taping and trading, there have been a few shows that I received in trade that were life changing. There was Wayne Vanderkuil’s recording of Attitude Adjustment from Ruthie’s on 6/6/86 that made me a lifelong fan/friend of the band. There was the Redrum show that I taped from Oasis Ballroom on 12/29/85 that made me realize that board tapes can sound good (thanks Greg Williams)… a DAT clone of a Slobberbone board tape from Mike Shiner that made me dive into the band’s recorded output… and many more.
But this tape is probably the only one that I listened to more than the rest of a band’s recorded output combined- I got this in trade from Mark Martin shortly after the show happened, in early 1986- many months before the record was released. I was a huge fan of the new crossover movement so I played this nonstop.
Other notable things about the show- this is the first show with “classic lineup” vocalist Chris Notaro. Also, Kirk Hammet comes up to play a lead on Hub Run, and Tommy from Straight Ahead (somewhat famously) tells Hammett to get off the stage.. which leads to Kirk hitting Tommy with the guitar and Tommy getting thrown out. That happens at about the 35:00 mark.
Just a legendary show by a legendary band. How the hell is this not on youtube yet? This was one of those tapes that everybody had on their trade list in 1986. Is it really that rare? Note: This is not on the “Turn Back Time” comp that was recently released.
