Uncle Tupelo- Blue Note, Columbia Mo. 1/25/92 xfer from band archive cassette-DAT Nirvana Cover

I got the last Uncle Tupelo Band Archive DAT back from the repair man, and he was able to salvage some of the shows on it. I will tell you about the saga of DAT# 253 at a later time.
Anyway, this show does not sound very good. The one redeeming quality that it does have, is the only complete performance of the band’s Mashup of Smells Like Teen Spirit/Stepping stone. If you want to hear Uncle Tupelo do Nirvana (kinda), forward to about the 1 hour mark in this show.

Uncle Tupelo- Lafayette’s, Oxford Ms. 10/22/91 Xfer from band archive audio tape

OK, back to the Uncle Tupelo archive. Here’s a nice quality soundboard from around their peak (in my opinion). Nice covers of Cheap Trick and Neil Young for the encore.

Dust Bowl Club- KDHX Live Acoustic in Studio, St. Louis Mo 9/14/91 Cassette Master xfer Uncle Tupelo

Here is the first of 3 posts today. Facebook folks get a bonus 4th one as well.
For today’s On This Date in History, let’s dive back into the Uncle Tupelo archives. This was one of the many tapes we got from Tony and Bob back in 1994, but then a better quality version popped up.
Michael from factory belt has the details:

“FM broadcast and pre-FM studio tape, from the late Doug Morris’ KDHX radio show “High Anxiety.” The only known recorded performance of the “The Dust Bowl Club” (Brian Henneman, Jay Farrar, and Tom Parr). A number of songs played are from a demo tape that Brian recorded with members of UT during the recording of Still Feel Gone. For quite some time, the only known tape of this show was recorded off the radio, with all of the between-song conversation edited out. More recently, Doug Morris’ pre-fm cassette of the show surfaced, though unfortunately Doug recorded over the last 30 minutes of his tape, meaning that the last 5 songs only exist from the FM tape.”

So, there are 2 versions. This better quality one and the one from the band’s archive that is more complete. I believe this one has both versions put together.

Uncle Tupelo- Lounge Ax, Chicago Il 6/14/91 Cassette Master-DAT Complete Show

Uncle Tupelo were always a great live experience, especially early on. The shows were unpredictable and the band would pull out some unexpected covers. On this show, we get the band opening with Soft Boys’ I Wanna Destroy You, a made up on the spot song called Factory Girl to poke fun at an audience request, Crazy Horse’s Everybody Knows this is Nowhere, and the only public performance of The Mike Heidorn song! Encore includes the Vertebrats’ Left in the Dark. This along with all of the usual favorites from the first 2 albums. Whatta show!

I can’t remember who recorded this. I think it might be Jeff Segota, but it was mastered on cassette and he had a DAT when I met him in 1992.

Uncle Tupelo- Charlie’s Tap, Cambridge Ma. June 1991 Xfer from band archive audiocassette

Uncle Tupelo were (in)famous for early, drunken performances. A few of them were documented in their archive, but this one is next level drunkenness. They were recording their album Still Feel Gone at Fort Apache, and this appears to be a one-off acoustic show. Jeff can barely talk straight at the beginning of the show. Awesome setlist, including single-verse attempts of songs never played before or since!

The recording of this in the pile of archive tapes was messy- the tape was just labeled “Charlie’s Tap”, and other fragments of the show was split across other vaguely named tapes.

Setlist: Willin’/ Flatness/ True to Life/ Gun/ There Was A Time/ Corona/ I’ve Been Working on the Railroad/ Punch Drunk/ Sin City/ Do Re Mi/ Life Worth Livin’/ Friend of the Devil/ Before I Break/ Whiskey Bottle/ Factory Belt/ September Gurls/ Gimme, Gimme, Gimme/ Watch Me Fall/ No Depression/ At the Crossroads/ You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet/ The Joker (Brian Hennemen vocal)/ Graveyard Shift (cut)
Only known versions of the Grateful Dead’s “Friend of the Devil,” Big Star’s “September Gurls,” and Doug Sahm’s “At the Crossroads,” (though each of those were unrehearsed and aborted after a verse or two).

Uncle Tupelo- Cat’s Cradle, Chapel Hill NC 4/17/91 xfer f/2nd gen soundboard tape open for Cracker

Here’s a late “on this date in history” post for you today. I was trying to figure out where I got this tape from- I thought it might be from the guy who came to my place in 1991 to get some tapes for their Camper van Beethoven book, and a search in newspapers dot com confirms it. Uncle Tupelo opened for the David Lowery band for this show. DLB was Cracker before they had a name. This comes from a copy off his tape, which was copied from the master. Great early set.

Uncle Tupelo- Lafayette’s, Oxford MS 4/6/91 Soundboard xfer from band archive audio tape

Here’s another gem from the uncle tupelo band archive. When I first got these, I had to get them transferred immediately and sent back to Tony. As a result, I never gave some of these shows a proper listen. This is one of them- damn, this one sounds good and is a great performance!

This tape was unlabeled but to Michael Pemberton’s sleuth work & a quick factorybelt dot net search, I figured out what it was.

Uncle Tupelo- Mississippi Nights, St. Louis Mo 3/20/91 xfer from Band Archive cassette

This show isn’t quite as pristine quality as the other UT archive stuff I have been posting, but this is a very special show- it was UT’s first time headlining mississippi nights, which was a big deal. They were returning from an east coast tour, so this was a homecoming show.
They pulled out a bunch of gems in this set, including FreakScene (dino jr), Cortez (neil young), She’s About a Mover, I drink stag, and many more. What a celebration.

Uncle Tupelo- KDHX “High Anxiety” Radio Show St. Louis 3/9/91 Master Audio cassette-DAT Int Acoustic

Alright, Day 1 of ALL collections, all the time! This one comes from my collection with a bit of a backstory. I have told the story of my friend Jim Utz going to the Tony Margherita Management office and borrowing about 50 Uncle Tupelo archive tapes(it is on a coffee creek post if you want to read the story). Tony & Bob from TMM had this KDHX session in the band archive but it was incomplete- 1 version edited for acoustic songs only, 1 cut off at 50 minutes.
Then we were graciously loaned Doug Morris’ archive of cassettes and we digitized as many as possible before returning them. I think this is where this version came from. Digitized by Michael Pemberton or Steve Brothers. It’s nice to enjoy a complete version of this one.

Uncle Tupelo- Blue Note, Columbia MO 2/16/91 Audio only soundboard xfer from band archive tape

Here’s the last Uncle Tupelo post for a bit- there is still a lot more to post… but this is one of the best shows in the band’s archive. Just a killer set and those encores! They did not do Dinosaur Jr’s Freak Scene often.
