I spent quite a bit of time making sure that today’s “on this day in history” post sounded good. The mix goes from all guitar, no vocals; to all drums, no guitar about 20min in. I had to split the show in 2 and perform 2 different rebalances in order to make it sound somewhat consistent.
It was the least I could do. This was House of Freaks’ last show ever. If you have never heard them, you are in for a treat. They were really great. Actually, this discogs overview sums it up well: “House of Freaks was a two-man band formed in Richmond, Virginia in the mid 1980s. Bryan Harvey played guitar and sang, and Johnny Hott played percussion. The band managed to achieve a remarkably full sound, mostly because of Hott’s inventive drumming and Harvey’s confident vocals and knack of playing bass lines on his guitar (cribbed from his many years as a bass player) while simultaneously playing a melody.” They also teamed up with Steve Wynn as part of a band called Gutterball.
I have tried to write something about Bryan and Kathryn and family regarding the tragedy in 2006, and I can’t do it. Rest in peace.

Here’s one that I wouldn’t have digitized for a long time, but Henry Owings asked for it. The tape is 30 years old, so unfortunately there are a couple of bursts of static/diginoise. Believe it or not, this mix was even worse- I rebalanced this in Izotope rx7: Bass +8db, Guitar +6.5db… and there still isnt enough guitar in the mix! Oh well, I tried.

As I am working through all of these trade requests, I get to pick and choose the shows that seem worthy of posting. This was one that I had low expectations about- usually a mid-90s audience recording is just meh. The performance and quality of this one is fantastic, so I figured I’d post it. I checked youtube and there isn’t much in the way of decent mid-90s audio from RFTC.

Collections post time- this one is from Anonymous’ collection. I am pretty sure that know who he got it from (Todd Goss), but I don’t know who taped it.
Check out that newspaper article- you know when the paper comically misspells your name that you are not quite a household name. Classic.
