Redrum- Lite Rail Inn, Sacramento Ca 7/15/88 xfer from 8mm master tape Thrash Metal MITFR

Hey, it’s 6 months of On This Date in History! Is anyone sick of it yet? It can sure be a grind, so if you hate it, speak up. Haha.
It continues to amaze me that some of the old master videos had not been uploaded yet. The On This Date project has helped with that. Since it was Mike Parisi’s birthday yesterday, let’s post this one in honor of him. He is the guy you see behind the drums when this video starts.
Unfortunately, it’s not great quality. This was before I bought that Sony mic for my camera and I was using the stock mic- all it picked up was high end and distortion. This transfer was done with the old setup, where I would firewire a sony digital camcorder into the Dell workstation. One day, I will try to do a proper transfer and degrain and stuff.

Redrum- Merrie Melodies Record Store, Lodi Ca. 6/18/88 Sacramento Thrash Metal

So this one is kind of a long story so I will try to keep it short. I used to manage Redrum and they were playing an outdoor show in Lodi on a Saturday. I had to work saturdays so I worked half day, then raced over there to see them play. Well, I did not have a chance to eat… and there was a lot of free beer at the show… so unfortunately you get to see some of the hijinks after the set. Please note that CARLOS is manning/directing the camera during most of the after-show stuff.

Redrum- Lite Rail Inn, Sacramento Ca 10/10/87 xfer from master audio tape Thrash Metal

What an odd show. It starts out with the PA just hissing loudly, and then when the band starts playing, you can’t hear Carlos. I guess the P.A. blew before they went on. That probably explains the 28 minute set length. If you ever wanted to perform Redrum karaoke, here’s your chance. The tape sounds good and the band is pretty tight- this is probably the best live intro to Blood Sucking Freaks I have ever heard.
Oh, and we were clearly stoked about being “signed” to Metal Blade (for 1 song), as we mention it multiple times during the show. Carlos says that the band is going into the studio on Tuesday to record that track for Metal Massacre, but they were going to record Into the Ovens according to the show. They ended up recording Random Violence. I wonder what happened there… I personally think Random Violence is a better choice.

Redrum- Lite Rail Inn, Sacramento Ca 9/30/87 Audio xfer from master cassette tape Thrash metal

My friend Alex asked me to pull out some corrupted morals cassettes for transfer as part of a reissue project they are working, and one of the tapes we needed did not have a number. Since I have 4,000 live cassettes (not counting DATs or others), I figured I was totally screwed. Since the tape was old, I started looking in the low numbers and I found it! Awesome! While I was digging through the trays, I pulled out some other tapes that looked interesting. This is one of the extras I pulled.
In the years before I bought my video camera, I would take my step dad’s Montgomery Ward boombox to record shows. I don’t know what mics were in that thing, but it performed amazingly well for a boombox. Redrum were pretty drunk for this show- Especially Mike Caboy who was probably the drunkest I have ever seen someone on stage. They were expected to play an hour and their set isn’t long enough, so you get unexpected treats such as an extended guitar solo by Don Adams and the unreleased song “Let’s Go to Burger King” to end the set. A truly classic Redrum show that is a perfect picture of how I remembered their shows. So great.

Redrum- 4 song Demo 1987 or so xfer from band archive audio tape Sacramento Thrash Metal

This tape is a bit of a mystery. I managed the band when they got back together in 1987, and I do not remember this demo at all. In addition, the track listing on the cover does not match the tape. It does start out with Frontline (as listed), but the second song is Death in Disneyland which is not even shown in the track listing. This version of DiD is one I don’t recall hearing before- it sounds like a studio demo, but not from either of the 2 studio demos made in 1987/88. All other versions of the songs, except Death in Disneyland, appear to be from the “Power Corrupts” demo session.
Check the sweet black with red foil business card in the photo.

EDIT: Mike let me know that this is not the Evil’s End demo, which was only CD tracks anyway. This has the Metal Massacre IX track plus Power Corrupts demo tracks.

Redrum- Oasis Ballroom, Sacramento Ca 12/29/85 xfer from Master Soundboard audio tape

I’m back! Man, that was a painful PC transition. Trying to figure out how to manipulate my itunes library.xml file at 1am this morning was AWESOME.

Anyway, this was probably one of the most influential shows I ever attended. I was friends with the band so I was carrying my boom box into The Oasis to record the show. Someone from the band (Vonni or Mike I think) asked “why don’t you record through the soundboard”? I was amazed- you can actually do that? So I ran out to the car and grabbed a D90 and taped over The Faction’s Darkroom album (sorry guys).
After the show, I popped it into my car cassette deck and was floored. I had no idea you could get such good sound from a board tape! So, you are all to blame for these 10,000 tapes now.
Funny side note: years later, I was doing something and absent mindedly let the other side of the tape play until the end. I discovered that the start of the set (dance of death) was also on the end of the other side of the tape! So, that is here for pretty much the first time ever for people to hear.
