It’s St. Patrick’s Day, so this one seemed appropriate for today’s On This day in History. This set is somewhat legendary in NYHC circles, there are mentions of this Supertouch/Murphy’s Law multiple times and one of the best WNYU sets… but it doesn’t seem to be online anywhere. The sound engineer posted over 70 sets online, but not this one. Interview and 2 songs live at the end.

I have been so busy all morning, I forgot to post today’s On This Date. This one is for Jeff (Gus Buss) as he is a big DS fan. I think this one was taped by Dan Pettit and he didn’t live too close to the radio station so you will hear some reception static.
Crucial Chaos was pretty active with these live in studio sessions in the late 80s. I already posted a Murphy’s Law one from here and the band Beyond even had their session released by Revelation records.

Bonus post today, thanks to Angelo Bertini! He told me what to do and got this RHCP show digitized. No known lineage, but it has an odd printed tape label which makes me wonder if it was a bootleg being sold at record shows. It has that look. Not too bad of a recording, probably a Sony D3 or equivalent. If YOU want to tell me what to do, check out the patreon at the link below.

I digitized a VHS tape from Tony Philputt’s collection and some of the sets were already online, so I opted for 2 short ones that are not online at all. Tony got the tape from a guy named Greg Fasolino and for a while Greg was posting a bunch of his archival videos, including Big Black from this night. Then, about 3 years ago, he stopped posting archival stuff. Kind of a bummer. This one is only 5 minutes long and it is pretty obstructed but there are not many videos of the band available. If you haven’t heard of them, Happy Flowers combined improvisational noise punk guitar and drums with lyrics often written in the first person from the perspective of a child, with childlike intonation and grammar. Their humorous songs are mainly about freak childhood accidents and common childhood gripes

Alright, since the Exodus Bonded by Blood 40th anniversary show happened last night, I figured that I would post a couple metal related things this weekend for On This Date in History. Oh, semi-pro tip for folks who bought the Exodus live stream- I noticed that they broadcast Exodus live last night, but if you go to the replay, there is about 15 minutes of Blind Illusion at the very start of the replay. I am screen capping it now (for my own personal use of course), but there is no Death Angel. I wonder why… Anyway, how about that tribute to Paul? Those audio clips of him were classic!
Here is a really interesting one. WRTN was a left of the dial FM station out of New Rochelle NY that existed from 1953-2006. They had an underground metal show on friday night/saturday morning at midnight each week. I am a sucker for these independent underground radio shows. So cool. Anyway, it sounds like King Diamond actually came in studio with them and sat for an hour-long interview. Lots of Mercyful fate history is discussed. It’s a really fun listen to fans of the king.
This one was either heavily traded or the FM signal was not great because there was a lot of noise on the tape. I use Izotope Rx8’s Spectral Denoise to take the edge off without affecting the sound quality.

I didn’t have anything truly mediocre for Mediocre Monday, so you get this instead. This was at the end of the Dag Nasty set on a tape that possibly came from Tim Yohannon (via Wayne Vanderkuil)- we can’t figure out who else it could have come from. I did some research on this and it doesn’t seem that this was part of any official CBGB “off the board” or other release, but it sounds pretty good. From Wayne vanderkuil’s collection

No week is complete without an Exodus tape from Doug. A LOT of Doug’s remaining stuff consists of master Slayer tapes, but I keep reaching for the Exodus shows. This partial show filled the rest of the B”B side of the L’Amour tape I posted last month. Same show as is on the officially released video, but this has more of the performance.

Here’s a cool historical document- the night before the Studio 54 show (seen on the Ultimate Revenge home video), Slayer and Exodus played a show 7 miles away at L’amour East. Lucky New Yorkers to get 2 shows, for sure.
I think this is one of Doug’s master tapes. I hear him yelling as Exodus does Impaler as an encore. It also sounds like one of his walkman recordings.. but the tape does not say “original” as many of his masters do and it is on a different tape brand than usual. I am sure Doug or Mark Kurtzner will correct me if I am way off base.
EDIT: It’s a master tape. Thanks Doug!

It’s an early Tour Manager Doug Tuesday post today. It looks like my son got me sick again, and the ol “vice on the lungs” feeling woke me up at 5am. Let’s hope it’s just allergies. Anyway, after promising a Slayer post every week, I realized that this is the only one I had prepped and uploaded for today. Next Thursday, on the day that Slayer returns to Sacramento, I will post a really cool one- one of the most unique in Doug’s collection. I am not sure if Doug taped this one, so I am calling it master or a 1st gen copy. It looks like there is a board tape of this show up on youtube, but here is an audience recording as well. It has a bit of distortion that I did my best to EQ out.

Last audio post for the week is another Doug classic set. Ripping set from them, on their first swing back east- I will be posting their first show ever in New York sometime soon! Who bought a ticket to Aftershock on Thursday just to see them? (raises hand). Should be awesome, and hopefully I won’t get clobbered like I did the last time I saw them. It screwed up/broke my camera!
