Neurosis- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 7/29/88 transfer from 1st gen Soundboard cassette tape Complete

This one is from Wayne Vanderkuil’s collection and it is pretty nice quality. From the look of the tape, it seems that he got this directly from Radley. The mix starts off vocal heavy but settles in quickly.

Fun fact- I have the original cardboard master of this flyer. Someone made this by scratching off the black texture on top to show the silver underneath.

Neurosis- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca. 6/11/88 xfer from 8mm master enhanced

So I have been playing around with this enhancement software and I think I finally have the combo that I will use from now on. Here is the legendary Neurosis show where Scott’s son (then a baby) comes onstage and someone almost stomps him while stagediving. The set is incomplete because I ran out of tape. This one is in 1080 HD.

Neurosis- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca. 6/11/88 xfer from 8mm master video enhanced with Soundboard audio

OK, now that the Gilman clif bar stream is done, it’s time to post some full sets that we were working on. This one was something. No one had decent audio of this show (we thought no soundboard existed), so I did my best to remix the audio from my old camera, with the stock mic, from the stage. I ws able to improve it from shitty, to slightly less than shitty. Then, after the submission deadline for the videos passed, Eric Mcintire told me that he had a board tape. We had a quick, contactless exchange at Ikeda’s in Davis on Tuesday and then the work started.
I got the tape digitized and remixed (the mix is all over the place, but better than the audio from the camera), then when I tried to synch it with plural eyes, it would not read the 2 audio sources as something that could be synched… because of the shitty stage audio. UGH. So our good friend Daniel Hague (Kill that cat, east bay punk doc) stepped in and stayed up until 2AM one night getting this synched. It’s not a perfect synch- synching 2 analog sources is near impossible- but he did one hell of a job. Thank you sir.

Creating this video took about 1000x longer than it took to read this explanation.

Neurosis- 924 Gilman, Berkeley 4/30/88 Transfer from low gen soundboard tape

Let’s do this one and call it a night. I’ll put 4 up tomorrow. This one is the audio post that was scheduled for yesterday, from Robert Eggplant’s collection. It’s definitely a low gen copy, probably a 1st gen. The tape just said “Neurosis Apr 30” with no year, but this is the only record of the band playing Gilman on that date that I could find.

It’s 7pm and you haven’t heard from me. What is up with that? It was a busy day. Got to go to DMV.. enough said.

I think that this is another Steve Von Till recording. He did a few shows early on and then started playing in bands instead, haha. My tape cuts off mid-set. I don’t know if he has the entire thing. Maybe we’ll find out when I pick up his collection someday.

I am pretty sure this is 2nd gen

Neurosis- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 12/13/87 Transfer from 1st gen soundboard cassette Punk Neurot

I decided to start digging into Anonymous’ cassettes again- I kept running out of time and would end up posting some recent stuff he recorded. This one is from an old tape that Radley compiled for him. Man, Radley always hooked us up with the tapes and many of them are not online now. I was surprised that this one wasn’t out there.

The mix, like many early Gilman mixes was heavy on vocals and light on everything else so I rebalanced it in izotope to even it out. I love this era of Neurosis.

Neurosis- The Farm, San Francisco Ca 12/27/86 xfer from low gen soundboard tape rebalance

This tape is a bit of a mystery. I asked Wayne V where it came from, and it’s not clear. He was trading at the time with Chris Dodge, Mark Martin, and a few others. I found that this didn’t come from Chris or Mark… so the most plausible source is Tim Yohannon. Wayne used to go over to the MRR house and copy as many tapes as possible, and the way that the tape is hurriedly marked makes it look like it came from there. That’s pretty cool.
