Here’s yet another one that baffles me. A lot of the stuff that I have on VHS was posted years ago by others, and since these were broadcast on St. Louis cable TV, you’d think this would have been posted by now. Nope. Early Flaming Lips!
From Jim Utz’ collection
Happy thanksgiving to everyone who is celebrating this year. Ever since I learned that the crap they teach you in school is not exactly truthful, I think of the holiday differently. I am thankful for many things, one of them being that I can enjoy getting all of my collection out for people to see.. and people seem to pay attention and enjoy them. I appreciate all of the friends I have made through the music scene over the past 35 years. Anyway, I was surprised to see that this was not posted yet. I worry that it will get blocked- we will see, I guess. This was one of the bigger, more mainstream artists that double helix filmed over at Mississippi Nights in the 80s. I am also thankful that they had the vision to film these bands– not many videos from that era are this good.
Here’s another mississippi nights video. I remember Jim telling me that a lot of the 1/4″ umatic tapes “walked away” from the station, so these 1st gen VHS copies may be the best remaining versions.
This Rollins show is intense- it’s pretty amazing to see the energy he puts into these early shows for 80 minutes! Damn.
This came from KDHX directly- this is a VHS tape right off of their 1/4″ master tape. Huge thanks to Jim Utz & Dede Schofield for giving these to me 20ish(30?) years ago.

Here’s another nice video, right from the KDHX Vaults. This is from Jim Utz’ collection, which means it is likely a master VHS transferred to DVD via a set top DVD recorder. Board mix improves a few minutes in.
Since work OWNED me yesterday (until 9:30pm), here is yesterday’s post. I’ll try to get 1 more up later today.
I was unaware of this, but this appears to be unaired. There is no title screen at the beginning like all of the other shows that were on KDHX, and it ends abruptly without credits. This vid has Jimmy Wilsey front and center (along with Chris of course) just SHREDDING. Just an amazing document from way back. Penelope Houston might appreciate this one.
Taking a break from the weekday audio posts to ask the question– what in the hell is going on over at KDHX in St. Louis? I became aware of KDHX back in the 1980s, when my good friend Jim Utz would send me videos like this one (copied on VHS tape) in the mail. NOBODY was documenting bands like this back then, and I have always had a soft spot for KDHX- a community radio/TV station run by volunteers making a huge global impact. Well, it seems that KDHX may have been bitten by the “corporate public radio” bug. They have fired many of the DJ’s that made the station great- people who have been there for over 20 years and made KDHX what it is today. First the Board of Directors stated that those DJ’s were encouraging listeners to not donate, then retracted that statement and said the firings were due to “combat things like racist and gender discrimination, and patriarchy and all of those things”… but did not back those statements up with any facts. This is pretty disheartening for a person like me, who lived far away but was emotionally invested in the station. I’m still trying to understand why- are they trying to become another KEXP or KCRW? No need, we already have one of each of those. Anyway, sorry for the rambling, and sorry to the VOLUNTEER DJ’s who gave a good chunk of their lives to the station, who were just dumped for (apparently) no good reason. Thanks for the memories, and for documenting all the great St. Louis bands, along with touring band bands like these guys. R.I.P.

Here’s another one from the “how the hell is this not on YT yet” file. From Jim Utz’ collection. Off of a master VHS tape, taped off of cable. There is no studio master of this one as far as I know, so this is as good as it gets.
Man, some of these early KDHX videos are DARK. This one is super dark and a little pixelated, but still far superior than the other version on YT now. From Jim Utz’ collection
This is an awesome interview- Mike and Thurston get onstage to interview each other and heckle the audience. They appear to be feeling no pain. That tour must have been fun.

VHS master (taped off cable)- DVD (consumer DVD recorder)
There are still a LOT of VHS tapes to be digitized (over 1,000) over here. I have done some as people have asked for things, but I have not started to do them all yet. Someone posted a link of the well-circulated Fishbone show from St. Louis 1986 and I noticed that the quality of the show on youtube is not very good, and the show is incomplete. So, I guess I’ll need to get to posting some of these.
This is the 1 hour version of the show that includes interview clips with the band. This came from KDHX directly- this is a VHS tape right off of their 1/4″ master tape. Huge thanks to Jim Utz & Dede Schofield for giving these to me 20ish(30?) years ago.
