This one is for Danny- he asked for it! I did not film this- thanks to the (unknown to be) filmer and to Charles for lending me the DVD.

Mediocre Monday is cancelled this week. The Sac music community received shocking news over the weekend- beloved musician and photographer Jay Spooner passed away unexpectedly. I did not know Jay personally, but after hearing so many wonderful things from others, I wish I did.
Danny Reynoso and Allyson Seconds both posted photos from what looks like the same show at Heritage Festival, I think from 1999. Everyone is right- Jay was able to capture amazing shots of musicians.. he just had that knack for timing. I hope folks don’t mind that I used his photos from that day for today’s and tomorrow’s posts.
I hadn’t planned on digging this DAT out to digitize until I saw these pictures, but I am glad I did. What an incredible set by The Knockoffs. It’s the usual (great) set, but then at about 21 minutes in, they start playing covers.. covers I have not heard them ever play before… and some have not been played since to my knowledge. Books about UFO’s(!), Born to lose, Aqua Dirty(!), and Dancing with Myself along with the best of the first album. Awesome.
Oh, one last thing- this was transferred flat- no rebalance or remixing. Eric Bianchi is a bad ass. Mix gets better after a few min.

A couple weeks back, Tim Foster messaged me and let me know that he found an OLD Knockoffs video tape in a box, and he wasn’t sure what was on it. I bring it back home and try to play it, and it immediately goops up my heads. After multiple attempts to play and clean heads, I get it to play… but it only plays static on the audio. I pop in a store bought VHS tape, and it plays audio on the VCR fine. This is happening for this tape and the desecration tape I posted yesterday. I try a different VCR, and I get audio. Never had THAT happen before. Like I have said before, this hobby is 20% transferring stuff, 5% actually enjoying the content, and 75% fighting with gear to get this stuff to work! Haha, it was totally worth it. Look at Tom’s beautiful head of hair.
So many songs that are either unreleased or pre- 12 Suckerpunches that were never played after this era. So cool. And it doesn’t sound awful for stock camera audio.
Thanks Tom (& Tim) for asking me to digitize this one. So awesome!

I was planning on posting a No Kill I tape today, but even when I set the age controls for 18+ on youtube, facebook would show the thumbnail, and that won’t do at all. You’ll need to see it to understand. If you want to see the planned post, go to http://www.sacramentomusicarchive.com and search “no kill I”.
Instead, I am posting a new and improved version of Xeroxica. This is the post that prompted Jason Dezember to contact me, and set the wheels in motion for Scott Miller to send me some tapes. Thanks again guys.
Here is my original post about this tape:
Since I have been locked down and not going to shows, local bands have not been represented enough lately. Here is a bunch of locals to make up for it.
I have been looking for this tape for YEARS and finally scored a copy on discogs a few months back. I excitedly popped it into the Nak Dragon and it sounded AWFUL- like you were listening with a pillow over your head. I figured it was the Nak’s auto adjustments so I waited for my new backup deck to be refurbished and… it sounds pretty much the same. I guess that’s just how it sounds. This is probably the most comically lo-fi “officially released” recording I have. Well done! I wonder if Secret Center Records went to the bands and asked them to spend no more than $10 on production of each song. It does get a little better toward the end- the No Kill I and Knockoffs songs are not too bad, production wise.

Here is the second and last video from that mystery VHS tape that just said “Knockoffs”, found in Tim Foster’s garage. I have checked with everyone on this one- Tom, Tim, Dal, Ken Doose (big Tom is MIA) and nobody knows where this is from. This one was DARK- the final result is post- brightness/contrast etc enhancement and it was pretty much cranked to 100% on all of it. Looks a bit like survelliance video 🙂
But it is a rare early Knockoffs show and for that I am very thankful.
Have a happy new year everyone!
