Jack and Jill- KUSF, San Francisco 11/26/95 Band archive master cassette-CDR Jonathan Segel

It appears that the MDC video I posted this morning is already out there- right off the master tape- but was listed without a specific date. That’s how it slipped through the ol’ duplicate post check. That’s getting deleted, so let’s do one that I am sure isn’t out there.

This was Jonathan Segel’s 2nd band (I think) after his solo releases of the late 80s/early 90s. There was Heironymous Firebrain who were active from 1991-1994, and then Jack and Jill, active from about 1995-1997. I think that the lineup for this is Jonathan, Jane Thompson and Russ Blackmar.

Jonathan Segel- KZSU Wednesday Night Live, Stanford, Palo Alto Ca 9/18/91 xfer f/band archive tape

Let’s do this one for On This Date in History, in honor of Camper van Beethoven playing what might be their final 3 shows ever this weekend.
Big thanks to Jonathan for letting me borrow his tapes back in the 90s.

Jonathan played on KZSU’s Wednesday night live and did 1 CVB song and at least 1 from Storytelling. I really like that album, it would be cool to see him perform some of those songs again.

Jonathan Segel- Great American Music Hall, San Francisco 5/25/90 Part 1 Camper Van Beethoven

Jonathan opened for Robyn Hitchcock (if my memory and tape list serve me correctly) and it was a great show. Mostly solo stuff from his “storytelling” 2LP set, with a CVB song or two in there for good measure. Taped with the old Aiwa CV80 8mm camcorder and with Sony ECM909 mic velcro’d on the top. Please check out my youtube channel. I have 100’s of videos, most of them multicams and all of them masters (except 2).

Jonathan Segel and David Immergluck- Great American Music Hall,SF 6/1/89 full set xfer f/JES Archive

The first of the month is always a bit challenging for the On This Date in History project. There are tons of listings that show as “6/1/xx” by default because they were done sometime in June with no specific date. There was more than one show I selected to post today that turned out to be a non-specific date. First world problems, right?
Anyway, I think this one was really performed on June 1. This was a benefit show at GAMH for Project Open Hand, which generated funds for the AIDS Meals on Wheels organization. Great cause.
Alias Records released a CD with some of the performances from this night, but they included only 1 song from each artist. This is Jonathan and David’s full 4 song set from that night. The final track, Love’s Not Lost, was included on the Alias release. There were tons of great artists on the CD including live performances from Chuck Prophet, Penelope Houston, and Alex Chilton.

Audio Live Concert

Jonathan Segel- UC Davis Coffeehouse 4/7/89 master video tape xfer enhanced Camper van Beethoven

The first minute of this video is a very short clip of Screaming Trees from Aggie Hotel from April of 89. It was so dark and there was no place to shoot from, so I gave up.
This Jonathan Segel show was the first time that I got to see him perform live. I had no idea that he was no longer in Camper van Beethoven, so when I went full fanboy and started gushing about the band he just said “I’m not in the band anymore.”. Whoops. Nice set by JES, doing songs off of his Storytelling album along with a couple of Camper songs he wrote. This is the first show where I used a mic other than the garbage stock one- it only took me a year to figure out that the camera mic unplugs and I can plug in a better one.
This was also one of those life-changing shows where you go to see one artist, and another band plays that blows you away. The Donner Party headlined this show and I couldn’t believe how great they were. I wanted to video, but they had already started playing and filming without permission felt wrong. Man, I wish I had filmed that set.
