Groovie Ghoulies- Crest Theatre, Sacramento Ca 1/27/00 xfer from Master DAT Audio Remix

Hey, Kepi announced a show at the Side Door on October 15- it should be a good time. That venue is really nice- it is Eric Bianchi’s home base so you know it’s gonna sound good.. and they are going to do the entire Appetite for Adrenochrome album with full band!
I figured I would post a Ghoulies thing today since I had them on my mind. Here is the time they opened up for the (fake) Misfits at the Crest! The mix was shockingly not great (Crest boards usually sound fantastic, so I brought up the guitar a lot. The drums still sound funny to me, but it’s as good as it is gonna get.

Groovie Ghoulies- Old Ironsides, Sacramento 8/15/99 DAT Soundboard Live Mix Roland MX5 Multitrack

I had uploaded some of my DAT masters to youtube back in 2016 and then forgot about them and left them in draft… I was checking the archive to see if I had already posted a different ghoulies show, and I see this draft… and then I sort to see all of the drafts on my YT channel and there they are.
This was a matinee show with The Skirts (spolier alert for tomorrow) opening. Excellent show- lots of special moments including an appearance by Jon Von (MTX, Human Toys) before he moved to France.
This was during the time where I tapped into each channel the board with a battery powered mixer and mixed the show live. This was before you could do cool stuff with a computer, so you had to try to do it live while trying to listen to the mix in the loud club. It starts off well, and then I push the levels a little too high for a few minutes. It stabilizes by the 10min mark.

Groovie Ghoulies- Heritage Fest, Camp Pollock, Sacramento 6/5/99 xfer DAT Soundboard Master RIP Jay

Here’s the only other set that I recorded at Heritage fest. I will always regret not recording the Skirts set in between the Knockoffs set and this one- it was the first time I had heard them, they opened with Girlschool’s “c’mon let’s go” and I was an immediate fan for life. I had my kids with me and my 4 year old threw a huge fit while getting water and made me late getting back. I will always remember him laying in the dirt throwing a huge fit, with those foam earplugs sticking out of his ears.
This is another post which features the photography of Jay Spooner, who we unexpectedly lost this past weekend. R.I.P. Jay.
Like the knockoffs set, this one is pretty special. It turns into an all star jam with members of the knockoffs coming up to do vocals, and Wendy from the Skirts giving Jaz Brown a rest by playing a couple songs. Fun set!
Mix started off good, but I think someone adjusted their stage volume (coughROACHcough) so the guitar drops out of the mix. I rebalanced in izotope and boosted the guitar a bit. Now it is a little too loud at the start and a little too low later on.

Here is one that I forgot that I taped, for today’s On This Date in History. It’s funny- Mike Desertt (who I did not know at the time) was there and videotaped the show. He posted it a few years back and I commented “I wonder why I missed this show”. Well, I didn’t miss the show. Now you all know why I keep this website- it’s how I remember past shenanigans.
I think I know why I didn’t remember the tape. The mix was not great- almost all vocals, which is not a knock on the sound person that night. Old I is tiny so you typically get an uneven board mix.
This is a really great, unique set. A mix of old favorites and deep cuts that were rarely played. I was able to fix it quite a bit with izotope, with a LOT of tweaking to the original. It’s listenable after about 5 minutes, and then is really good for the end of the set.
