Jack and Jill- KUSF, San Francisco 11/26/95 Band archive master cassette-CDR Jonathan Segel

It appears that the MDC video I posted this morning is already out there- right off the master tape- but was listed without a specific date. That’s how it slipped through the ol’ duplicate post check. That’s getting deleted, so let’s do one that I am sure isn’t out there.

This was Jonathan Segel’s 2nd band (I think) after his solo releases of the late 80s/early 90s. There was Heironymous Firebrain who were active from 1991-1994, and then Jack and Jill, active from about 1995-1997. I think that the lineup for this is Jonathan, Jane Thompson and Russ Blackmar.

Monks of Doom- Kennel Club, San Francisco Ca 1/17/90 VIDEO

Hi, here is my master video of Monks of Doom from Kennel in 1990. This was a crazy night. I caught a ride from promoter Brian McKenna’s brother and they ended up going to a park after the show to hang out and I did not get home until 5am. Work the next day was awesome. Anyway, I have always loved the earlier Monks stuff the most so this one gets upped first, for Mr. Joe Burns.

This is part 1, you can search the title on youtube to see the rest of the show.

Camper Van Beethoven- Ventura Theater, Ventura Ca 12/8/89 xfer f/1st gen VHS tape Complete Full Show

Today’s On This Date was filmed by the same guy who did the Janes Addiction/Marys Danish UCSB show, I think. I think I recall begging him to go to this and video, and then I got it in trade back in 1990. It’s a bit over exposed and it was shot handheld from the back of the venue, so it is a bit shaky as well. Still a cool, rare video w/Morgan. There aren’t many of them out there.

Camper Van Beethoven- Sonoma State University, Rohnert Park Ca. 12/5/89 xfer from 8mm master LIVE

So this was a very memorable night. John Conley, Jason Ellis, Mike Yoas and I piled into a car and headed to Rohnert Park on a very foggy night. It was so foggy, we could not see where we were going! I had just started trading tapes with a lady named Carolyn Adams and we met for the first time. We became fast friends and are friends for life! I also had a huge crush, but I was socially inept. Also, you’ll see that the video loses focus A LOT. My viewfinder was broken, so I did not have an eyepiece on the camera. I filmed this entire show while standing on a chair in the back, with my eye up to the tiny(1″?) tv screen. It’s kinda amazing that it looks this good. Filmed with Aiwa CV80 & Sony ECM909 mic

Camper Van Beethoven- Greek Theatre, Berkeley Ca 8/12/89 xfer from master audiotape Sony Pro Walkman

Camper Van Beethoven opened the 10,000 maniacs show I posted yesterday. I was a huge CVB fan and was mainly at the show to see them. It was strange seeing them in such a large venue, when we had seen them at River Theater just 3 weeks before this. I EQ’d this one to make it a bit less bright and boost up the bass. Yep, had even less bass than this originally.

Camper Van Beethoven- River Theater, Guerneville Ca 7/23/89 xfer from 8mm master tape Full show raw

Another surprise for today’s On This Date in History- I thought I had posted this right when I started this channel but apparently not.
Camper van Beethoven was my favorite band in 1989- I was so excited when Jackson Haring (CVB’s long time manager) gave me the OK to video. Usually, when a band gets signed to a major label, that was the death of video permission…
My excitement shows in the video. I am a little too jumpy with the camera work, especially at the start. I do settle down a little. The video is dark and grainy- this one really needs a new transfer and denoise. Someday soon. Anonymous was also there and his WMD6C tape sounds way better than my audio. Another lady (I cannot remember her name) also filmed the show and I think she might have sent me her master tape? It would be great to improve this as much as possible and repost. Given time constraints, this is all for today.
Fun fact: Even though CVB were well established and had 2 albums out on Virgin, Psychefunkapus insisted in headlining the show. I also have that video…

Jonathan Segel- UC Davis Coffeehouse 4/7/89 master video tape xfer enhanced Camper van Beethoven

The first minute of this video is a very short clip of Screaming Trees from Aggie Hotel from April of 89. It was so dark and there was no place to shoot from, so I gave up.
This Jonathan Segel show was the first time that I got to see him perform live. I had no idea that he was no longer in Camper van Beethoven, so when I went full fanboy and started gushing about the band he just said “I’m not in the band anymore.”. Whoops. Nice set by JES, doing songs off of his Storytelling album along with a couple of Camper songs he wrote. This is the first show where I used a mic other than the garbage stock one- it only took me a year to figure out that the camera mic unplugs and I can plug in a better one.
This was also one of those life-changing shows where you go to see one artist, and another band plays that blows you away. The Donner Party headlined this show and I couldn’t believe how great they were. I wanted to video, but they had already started playing and filming without permission felt wrong. Man, I wish I had filmed that set.

Camper Van Beethoven- Calamity Jayne’s, Las Vegas Nv 7/27/88 xfer from 3rd gen soundboard rebalanced

Here’s a request from Carl Sylvester- this was a legendary show amongst music fans in LV.. and I can see why. It looks like they were playing this tiny club that had cool shows in the late 80s. CVB played for over 85 minutes, which is unusual for that era.
The board tape was heavy on drums and vocals, so I tried to boost up the bass and guitar/keyboard. Unfortunately, Izotope stuck the keyboard and guitar together into one “channel”, so I had to crank the keyboard to get some guitar in the mix. Still, not bad and a killer show.

Camper van Beethoven- Roxy, Hollywood Ca 5/23/88 xfer from VHS tape Enhanced

I hope everyone is enjoying the super bowl. I missed the first qtr to watch the Kings lose.
Here is another one from that stack of VHS tapes. I try to keep away from posting unknown lineage tapes that are clearly suffering from generation loss.. but this one has never surfaced online (that I am aware of), this is my favorite era of CVB, and this is a pretty unique show. Keith Morris comes onstage to sing Wasted with the band. That could not have been easy for Keith, CVB does the song at about half speed compared to the Circle Jerks version.
Also, how did this guy get the OK to video at The Roxy? I tried ONCE in the 3 years I lived in L.A., and was told no video and they don’t care who gave permission.
I hope a better copy surfaces of this one someday.

Camper Van Beethoven- Mississippi Nights, St. Louis Mo. 11/5/87 xfer f/master off Studio 1/4″

The other concert on that Fishbone tape was this classic show by Camper Van Beethoven. Camper(along with R.E.M.) was my favorite band in the world at the time. All of us CVB fans/traders were thrilled to get such a nice quality video… and a killer performance as well. I love Jonathan’s violin sound on this one.

This came from KDHX directly- this is a VHS tape right off of their 1/4″ master tape. Huge thanks to Jim Utz & Dede Schofield for giving these to me 20ish(30?) years ago.
