Peelander Z- Hole in the Wall, Austin Tx 3/14/18 Multicam

I took a quick trip to Austin in March to see Grand Champeen at sxsw. I was only there overnight, but I had some time to kill before my flight the next day so I headed to Hole in the Wall and saw Peelander-Z. I had seen them at Riot Fest and knew that they would be entertaining, and I am glad I did. I love hole in the wall, what a great venue. You need to watch this video at about the 23 minute mark to see how (not) excited that teenage kid is, to be dancing with peelander-z. Classic!

Equipment used: Canon HFG40 & Rode Video Pro Stereo Mic, Canon HFG30 on Tripod, and 2 Gopro Hero 4 silvers. The last ~10min of the set is just 2 camera, after the gopros get knocked down for the crowd/bowling song.

Lee Bains III and the Glory Fires: Spiderhouse, Austin TX. 3/13/18 Canon HFG40 Rode VPS Mic

After Superchunk, Joe & I hopped in a taxi and headed over to Spiderhouse. I have to say that this is my favorite area. I spent all of my time between spiderhouse, hole in the wall, and torchy’s tacos.
Here’s Lee Bains III. I had never seen him/them before, and they were GREAT!!
I was at another stage when he started. I thought I was at the right stage. Whoops. I missed the 1st song or so.

Mike and the Stares- Hole in the Wall, Austin Tx. 3/13/18 Mike Nicolai Canon HFG40 Rode VPS Mic

So this show was the reason why I did the crazy trip to Austin. Mike Nicolai/Lil Capn Travis/Prescott Curlywolf and Grand Champeen. What a lineup! Mike opened the show and I really enjoyed it. Features Michael Crow from Grand Champeen on guitar.
PS: The other bands are going to take a bit to post because I am waiting on an audio source, and we need to edit 3-4 cameras together. Also, this video looks a bit dark because I screwed up and had my camera on “cinema” setting, rather than manual. D’oh! The rest of the show is much brighter.

Superchunk- Waterloo Records, Austin TX. 3/13/18 Canon HFG40 & Rode Video Pro Mic

So I did this crazy thing and went to sxsw with pretty much no notice an no place to stay. Thanks for Philip Garcia for helping me out with a place to stay!
So I got off the plane and went straight to Waterloo Records. I see a guy there that I know from postcard but have never met. So I awkwardly go “hey.. aren’t you Donny?”. It was great to meet Donny, Dave Dewey, and Jersey Joe from postcard… and I got to hang with DPB, the nicest guy ever. AND I saw Will Johnson for the first time in 10 years.. and he says “I know who you are, Shayne. We stayed at your place in Sacramento in 2003”. HOW does he remember stuff like that?
AND I got to meet Alex Livingstone, who didn’t think flying from California to see his band play was odd at all. Or he played it off well.
Anyway, it was great hanging out with everyone. And meeting quite a few of you guys.

Grand Champeen- Hole in the Wall, Austin Tx. 3/13/18 Multicam with Matrix Audio

I am so excited about this video.
Grand Champeen are one of my favorite bands of all time. They were from Texas but some members have moved around in recent years. They put out 4 albums – all were great but my favorite is The One Who Brought You. Check it out if you haven’t heard it before.

The band quit touring about 10 years ago, so I flew to Austin to see them. Man what a whirlwind that trip was. It was nice meeting all of the Postcard crew and HUGE thanks to Philip Garcia for putting me up for a night at the last minute, during SXSW.
This show is great- Ned, their drummer, had the flu and had to stop for a bit after “Rottweiler Hair”. Way to rally and make it through the show!
Sorry for the imperfect nature of the video- the camera close to Alex (Bass) has some vibration issues- they were LOUD. It sounds great and it is pretty obvious that the band is having a great time.

Lil Capn Travis- Hole in the Wall, Austin Tx. 3/13/18 Multicam Live Rode Audio

Last year’s Grand Champeen show was a dream bill for me- Mike Nicolai opened and one of my favorite bands of the 2000’s played second on the bill. L’il Cap’n Travis is more on the country side of the alt.country spectrum, and they write some amazing pop songs with pedal steel frequently laid over the top. I never thought I would be able to see this band, so I was probably a little too excited to see the band. I got a little teary eyed when they played my favorite song “My Ship is Coming In”. Such a great night.
Thanks need to go out to Philip Garcia for letting me crash at his place at the last minute, and to Liam Dennis & Charlie Passarell for the edit.

Prescott Curlywolf- Hole in the Wall, Austin Tx. 3/13/18 Multicam with Rode Audio Grand Champeen

Here is Prescott Curlywolf’s set, opening for Grand Champeen last year during sxsw. They brought the energy- I really wish I knew more of their material going in… it really helps to film when you know what’s going to happen. It sounds great, even though they were louder than hell. You can see that the G10 angle on the stage is vibrating pretty heavily due to volume.

Edit: Tromster. Extra special thanks to Tromster as we discovered an issue with this one and he had to completely re-do it!

Live Concert Video

Grand Champeen, Li’l Cap’n Travis, Moonlight Towers- Covers Night 2, Parish, Austin Tx 4/23/05 digit

Late posts today because everything has been more work than it has seemed.. all day long.

Here is a classic show of 3 great Austin bands- 2 of which are some of my all time favorites, playing mostly covers for On This Date in History.

I could not figure out where one band ends and another one begins for this show. There is one clear set change at about 30min, and I hear Grand Champeen doing Ace of Spades at about 85min, but otherwise I don’t know. The fact that they are doing covers, although it makes for a fun/unique show, isn’t helping with the splits. So you get it ALL. Enjoy Austin’s finest doing covers of their favorite bands.

The board mix was heavy on vocals and light on everything else, so I rebalanced it in Izotope. That’s why it is so late- it took 2 hours to process!

The “digit” at the end of this is supposed to be “digital clone” as it bounced from DAT to CDR etc.

Recorded by: ? (I would not be surprised if the taper was Lance Davis)
CD rip/prep and rebalance by Shayne Stacy
Izotope settings: Bass/drums +3, Guitar +6.

Audio Live Concert

South San Gabriel- SXSW Bigsby’s, Austin Tx 3/20/04 xfer f/ DAT Soundboard Centro-Matic Will Johnson

I spent a ton of time working up this one for today’s On This Day in History. Not because a lot of people will listen, but because I love this band. They also play 5 of my favorite SSG songs ever.
South San Gabriel were a side project of Centro-Matic. My personal favorite release is their 2003 “Welcome Convalescence” CD, which is why this set hits just perfect. My only complaint is that it is too short.
I worked to rebalance the set since vocals and drums were buried and bass was a bit prominent. I like it a lot now.
Everyone should listen to this.

CD Rip and Rebalance by Shayne in Izotope Rx8: Vocal +5, Drum +4, Guitar +2

Audio Live Concert

Brent Best- Continental Club, Austin Tx 12/15/03 xfer from DAT Clone Soundboard Slobberbone Danbom

Here is the first of THREE audio posts today. Wow, am I glad I picked this one for on This Date in History. Brent opens with Robert Cole which is probably my favorite solo song of his. Looks like I am listening to the entire thing…

Brent is opening for Pernice Brothers here, so it is a short 47 minute set. He is joined by Multi-Instrumentalist Scott Danbom from Centro-Matic and Static Diary.

This is great- highly recommended.
