Jawbreaker- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca. 1/31/19 Single Camera version Canon HFG40 Rode Videomic Pro St

Last year on this date, I lucked out and was on my way home from my work’s sales conference in SF and was able to catch this show in Berkeley. I had 6 cameras ready to film, but I was not allowed to put my gopros up so I only have 3 angles. I hope to get this edited one day- we are waiting on audio.
This one is the stationary camera in the old sound booth. There are some vibration issues up there, even though I tried to avoid them by sticking gel heels on the legs of the tripod… nope, too bassy. Even with that, this was the best full-show single camera angle to post.

Jawbreaker- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca. 1/31/19 Live Multicam with Multitrack Soundboard audio 1080p HD

First of all, GILMAN IS NOT CLOSING. That was a poorly timed joke be someone who thought it would be funny to “rick roll” people on the same day that Uptown Lounge in Oakland announced they were closing their doors permanently. Dude needs to understand that jokes are all about the timing.

Anyway, here is a video I have been wanting to share for quite a while now, but I am glad we waited. The multitrack audio sounds fantastic! Ethan Zeitman did a really great job with the mix. Also, some of my gopro’s were cleared off stage right before the band started and it kinda screwed up my shot, but Daniel Hague was there and his angle was exactly what we were missing, so it all worked out.

Sarchasm- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca. 1/31/19 Live (Semi) Multicam East Bay Punk

This one requires a little bit of explanation. I wasn’t even supposed to go to the Jawbreaker show, but I blew out of a work conference (in San Francisco) early to go to the show. There was some kind of traffic issue on the Bay Bridge which took me on a huge detour and I got to the show super late. It took something like 2 or 2.5 hours to get from SF to Berkeley.
So, when I walk into Gilman, I see that Sarchasm is getting ready to play. I haul ass and start setting up cameras. So, for the first 10min of the show, you only get 1 camera from the old soundbooth.. then you get camera #2 (Ladder mount) at about 9:30, then my camera from straight back at about 12:30 in. Sorry- I know Alex and the band really wanted this documented. Not only that, but there was no multitrack recording of the show, so you get stock camera audio.
Regardless, the band is still great and it is still listenable.

TSOL- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca. 3/23/18 LIVE Multicamera “1st 2 Records” Show T.S.O.L.

OK, this is probably going to be long. TL;DR version: This is Great, Must See.

TSOL announced special shows in January of 2018 where they played the 1st EP and Dance With me, so I made plans to see 3 of the shows- Sa Diego, OC, and Ventura. Well, my family got the flu so I stayed home and cared for them. When TSOL announced these shows up north, they were not billed as the “1st 2 records” shows. We all found out when they started the set, no one knew. I was so damned excited that my eyes were watering.
On top of it, this show was one of those times when EVERYTHING went well- the band was ON- the best I have ever seen, Jack was HILARIOUS, and all angles turned out ok. I get lucky enough to film a special performance with nothing going wrong like this about once every couple years..
Now that I have seen this, I hope they get back to playing more stuff off “The Trigger Complex”- GREAT record.

Thanks to Jack and the band for permission to film.

The Pathogens- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca. 3/23/18 Multicam w/ Rode Audio Live Tilt Blatz

I don’t have much time to write something up today, but here is another new edit from older footage. We did not do this one for 2 reasons- audio and lighting. The board tape for this show was not great, so I had planned to matrix it with the audience. When I tried to put them together, it just made Jesse’s vocals more squelchy and distorted… so audience mic only for this one. Gilman’s lighting is hit and miss, and it was extremely uneven for this show. So Cinder glows like a ghost in some angles and you can see the rest of the band well, and she looks fine in others (my camera) while everyone else is dark. Oh well. This is probably the best Pathogens show I saw. I really need to get their album.

Sol Drop- Ladyfest, 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca. 3/23/18 Multicam Live Punk

Here’s another newly edited multicam, thanks to Liam Dennis for the editing help on this one! I got to this show a bit late (what else is new), so you will see that it starts out as a 2 camera edit, and then the camera that I operate kicks in at about 9 or 10 minutes. The audio is from an audience mic, it looks like I only got the last 3 minutes of the set through the soundboard.

Terror- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca. 3/16/18 Multicam Hardcore

Now that I have found a few good spots to place the cameras, these Gilman videos are turning out pretty good. This show was like one of the old shows there- it was so packed that it was like walking into a gross punk rock body sweat sauna. Yuck.

Jesus Piece- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca. 3/16/18 Canon HFG30 Tripod Stock Mic

Whenever I do multicam at Gilman, it is a workout. Climb the ladder to mount 1 camera on the top of the ladder leaning against the wall, haul the tripod and backpack up into the old soundbooth/crows nest to put up the tripod, etc. Since it is so hard to get up there, I just leave the G30 running up there. I luckily was able to catch Jesus Piece’s set with the G30. The camera does not move and it is recorded with the stock mic, but it still ain’t bad.

American Nightmare- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca. 3/11/18 Live Multicam

Here’s another hardcore show that I filmed at Gilmam. This place was beyond packed and I have never seen so much flash photography at a show before. What’s up with that? Flashes cause my cameras to freak out. Filmaed with a Canon HFG40 w/Rode Video Pro mic, Canon HFG30 mounted to ladder, and Canon HFG30 on a tripod in the balcony. Edit by tromster.
