It’s time for another collections post from new contributor Scott Schiller. Scott and Jonemery (Chuck) Dodds are promoting a new series of shows in the Davis/Woodland area. It looks like they started at Morgan’s Mill in Woodland and they are now doing some stuff at Watermelon Music in Davis, but I saw another show at the Mill in March. Go follow left of the dial promotions if that is your jam, as the kids say.
This show took place about a month ago with Kevin and Alex. Almost 2 hours of song swaps and stories. It’s a bit dynamic, so turn it up.

Let’s do the Patreon Voter’s Choice first today! I just remembered that I haven’t started the ballot for this week- yikes! Get in on it ASAP if you want to vote on something cool this week. This week’s theme- Off List Audio.
Miki Berenyi came to SF last week for the last time and played a bunch from her MB3 releases and SIX lush “covers”! I was able to make my schoeps recording sound decent- it was very bassy and muddy. I EQ’d out some of the lows, boosted the mids, and then ran it through Izotope to bring up vocals as much as possible without it sounding bad.
There are quite a few people in the way of the shot, especially later in the show. I knew that GAMH were sticklers about monopods on the floor, so I brought this little selfie stick and popped it in my shirt pocket. I needed some support since the left hand isn’t all the way healed yet. It wasn’t as high as my usual monopod and it kinda worked… and then some tall dudes get in the way toward the end of the set and I didn’t want to move and ruin the audio sweet spot. So there ya go. This is what happens when you compromise audio and video. It’s not terrible.
Thanks to my friend (and Sac Muisc Archive board member) Jim Utz for the help with the camera pass. This probably wouldn’t exist without him!

Here’s video #2 for the day, and it is the Patreon Voter’s Choice! Thanks voters- new ballots get sent late tomorrow and it’s only $10/mo to play. New polls every week! I am so backlogged that I think I will put up about 10 recently filmed shows and let you pick.
Alright, I need to warn you about this one. My good friend Jeff was giving me those Shaq Beatbox punches since they were FREE and I got pretty hammered.
The good news is that I found a pole in the edge of the VIP section that face the shockwave stage, so I popped it up there and that kept is steady. The bad news is that there was an “influencer” who kept sticking her camera right in front of mine. It isn’t too obvious for most of the show, but it irritated the hell out of me.
The schoeps audio sounds better than I expected since I was so far away from the stage and off to the side. So far off in fact, that the audio and video is out of synch a bit. I was so far away that the sound had to travel to me. LOL Big shows.
Nice keytar btw

It’s our weekly Patreon Voter’s Choice selection! All of our $10 per month and up patrons get to vote on a weekly post. This past week’s theme was Aftershock Day 1. Alkaline Trio ran away with the vote this week. I want to thank my patrons for their support and for not presenting me with yet another tie. If you want to get in on the action, I will share a link to the patreon in comments. I think you can figure out what this coming week’s vote will be!
OK, about the video. I had planned to get to the fest early on Thursday but it was raining and my cast (and mics on my head) do not do well with water. So I had to wait for that to stop and then I headed over. I missed the Ataris, Snot and Thrown. Dammit.
This was my first attempt at filming the main stage and just like past years, the VIP section sounded like ass. That’s why you see me pull up stakes and move to GA. Sorry for the shakiness of the video, I was getting used to filming from a distance with the cast on. It settles down after about 10min.

Here is one that I video’d that turned out way better than expected. This was one of the first shows I filmed after fracturing my hand and I needed some help from friends to get set up. Thanks Jennifer- you were very kind.
Great show and the audio and video quality are some of the best I’ve done with the G9ii/Schoeps setup.

Today’s video collections post comes from my collection and goes out to Dave Dalton from Screaming Bloody Marys. He hasn’t been feeling too well lately and is stuck at home. Hope you feel better soon.
This was one of a handful of shows that featured Andy Galeon on drums with the band. He was in Death Angel, The Organization, and more.

It’s another Dickies video for you all from my collection. I feel bad about this one- it’s a good show and the quality of the video is good, but it pales in comparison to the kickass Garden Amp show I posted a couple months back. This was the last band I ever filmed at Goldfield downtown so it’s good as a memorial piece at least. Plus, who knows how much longer the Dickies will be at it- go see your heroes every time you can. The audio starts out weak- there are no vocals anywhere for the first 5min. They fix the board mix and vocals start coming through. Thank goodness I ran the schoeps or there would have been no usable audio.

LATE collections post tonight. It’s from my collection, so no harm done, haha. Ozomatli played in between Cracker and Camper van Beethoven at the fest. I was going to go sit and rest my old man bones, but Anonymous asked me to audiotape. I’m glad I did, because it sounds pretty damned good. I was also right next to the off-stage/audience drum jam at the end of the set, so you get a good sampling of that too.

First off, if you all can do me a favor and NOT post this over on the Cracker crumbs facebook group, I would appreciate it. I got plonked by David on Sunday and was asked to not post there, so let’s play it safe and keep my stuff off of there completely. Yikes. Between that and Morst’s issues at The Fillmore, it seems that the ol’ “taper freindly” label is starting to peel off. haha.
So this is the first of 2 that I am posting from last week’s voter’s choice. It took me over 3 HOURS to get to this fest from home. It’s about 100 miles. I thought I left in time to make it to see Cracker, but there was SO much traffic. So that’s why you see this one cut in and get filmed through the soundboard tent. I had to turn the camera off a couple times to get settings dialed in. It’s amazing it turned out as good as it did, given the circumstances. The CVB set is way better.
