It’s Friday, so you get video today. This one comes from the collection of Robert Eggplant. This one tape is so odd- it’s clearly low gen as the edges of the people in the video are sharp, but there are these black lines/shadows that appear. It looks like it might have been done with cheap dubbing cables, or maybe a PAL to VHS issue(see screen message at beginning of set). Too bad, it’s good video.

Mondays are usually days to post audio, but today is Robert Eggplant’s day in the ol’ rotation of collections. He left me a few VHS tapes the last time he loaned me a box. Here is the most Bomb Bassets footage I have ever seen. Sure, it’s not great quality, but where else are you gonna find it? Features Dr. Frank from MTX on rhythm guitar.

Hi, This is another request from Andy Andersen. We were talking about Tales of Terror and I mentioned Cactus Liquors, which featured at least 1 member of ToT in the band. Here’s the info: Members: Derek (Chode) Lively, vocals Mike Hunter, guitar Dusty Coffin, bass Bob Stubbs, drums Terry Bohm replaced Dusty on bass (info courtesy the excellent Nokilli website) Tracks: Glenn Paint the Porch Cactus Mess Cold Day Gonna Die 69 Merc Transfer from 1st gen cassette done with nakamichi dragon – EMU 1212m audio card.
Wow, what a day. That was the hardest I have physically worked in a while. But you are still getting 2 posts today!
First one is from Anonymous 2’s collection. The design of this demo tape is very similar to another Deathray demo that I posted a year or so back from my collection, but this one has a completely different track list. Not sure if it was from the same session.
Guitarist Greg Brown was in Cake and Dana Gumbiner was in Little Guilt Shrine prior to Deathray.

Hey, remember when !!! played KDVS’ Studio A? Yeah, me neither but thanks to Ken Doose and his awesome collection of tapes, we can all hear it!
!!! were formed in 1996 in Sacramento, California, by members of The Yah Mos, following the demise of that band. There is no date on the tape, but I think this is from 1998 or 1999 because the band asks the DJ to play something from Fugazi’s End Hits album, which was released in 1998.

Here’s one from Anonymous 2’s collection. Since this person promoted shows in the area, there are a ton of demos from Sacramento area bands along with a bunch of others from around the country. I am working on documenting all of the tapes, like you requested in the Patreon. Sorry it is slow going- I had to wait for my wrist to heal!
The Mummydogs were Guy Kyser (Thin White Rope), Johanna Kyser (Thornucopia), Cary Rodda and Paul Takushi (tons of Davis bands). When I first digitized this a few months back, I thought that it might have been one of my remixed board tapes that I did of theirs but after a closer listen I think this is really a 2 song demo. It does not shazam to the only album they released, so I am going with Demo unless someone proves me wrong.
More info thanks to Paul (drummer and probable engineer of this demo!) “This must be a very early demo bc when I hear the drums, it’s not what I ended up playing as time passed. (Sounds really stiff, too.) I want to say that it was recorded at the old practice spot in W Sac, two doors down from the Deftones’ spot. I think I engineered it on my Tascam Porta 2 4-track cassette machine. We used two PZMs to capture the bass and drums, a SM58 on guitar, and a SM57 on keyboards. Mixed that down to two tracks, then overdubbed the vocals. Then, mixed that into two tracks. Then, made copies from that.”

Collections post for today- this one is from Todd Nakamine’s collection. As usual with Todd, you never really know what you are gonna get once you dive into these VHS tapes. As far as I can tell, this has 2 versions of each promo video- one edited for language and/or nudity.
it’s 18+, so log in.

It’s time for the local spotlight! Man, this is a bit harder than I thought it would be. I was going to put up a 100 Acre Wood CD, but I discovered it was already on youtube after I worked it up. Then I tried a rap artist named Mac Rell. Nope, also on YT. So Duval Speck it is. I found an old website (at least 15 years old) with info about the band, but their official website is now gone. If this disc is still available new (beside the ONE at Armadillo Music), let me know. I try not to post commercially available CD’s. Only rare/out of print for this project. It looks like Cathy Speck passed in 2021. Rest in Peace.
Linda Duval and Cathy Speck are a folk-pop duo who perform occasionally around Davis coffee houses, the Farmers Market, and The Co-op. They often collaborate with other musicians in groups such as The Essentials and She 3.
Duval Speck have two albums, Green Eye, Blue Eye, released in 1998, and “Thanks For Waiting,” released in 2008. You can buy both at The Co-op or contact them. They used to host the annual Women’s Music Nite, where female singer/songwriters from all over come to showcase their talents. However, most of their activities have been greatly curtailed as Cathy has been battling ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. She blogs and sings about this (blog+song=blong) at her blong.
In November 2013, Duval Speck received the Harmony in Our Lives Award.

One of my hobbies is hitting up garage/estate sales and picking up media & vintage electronics. I went to this one place in Orangevale and they handed me a big paper handle bag and told me to fill it up for $5. I went over to the CD’s, cassettes and VHS tapes and grabbed all of them (about 50) without really looking. I got some serious cheez (Yanni cassette, angela landsbury workout VHS) but I also got an einsturzende neubauten tape, a green day dookie promo tape, and this one. I was floored when I pulled this out of the bag. It makes me wonder- was this person a easy listening fan, and they also loved EN & Deathray? Maybe it was one of the grandkids’ tapes. Who knows.
Anyway, 4 of these 6 songs made the 1st album on Capricorm. 2 of them are on the Poprockit 7″ from 1998 (I believe that is Kevin Seconds’ label). 2 are unreleased.
