Black Kronstadt- 1022 Smith St, Green Bay Wi 8/31/95 xfer f/Master VHS Tape Victoria BC Anarcho Punk

After the long weekend, I got caught without a post ready from Jason Ross’ videotapes, so I pulled this one that I transferred to DVD back when I didn’t know what the hell I was doing, haha. If you guys are all “omg, Black Kronstadt! Can you do a better transfer?”, I just might. A lossless transfer, lighting adjustments, denoise, and volume boost would help, for sure.

AFI- 1022 Smith St, Green Bay Wi. 7/15/95 xfer from master VHS Tape Enhanced Live A.F.I. Basement

Here is a really cool one for today, again from some of the stuff that I digitized for the Turn it Around doc. This was a poorly lit basement show, and the original tape was super dark… but since Jason Ross had the awesome old-school giant GE VHS camcorder, the recording was clean enough for me to boost the hell out of brightness and exposure to make it watchable. Thanks Jason!

Killdozer- Kutska’s Hall, Green Bay Wi 2/18/95 xfer from VHS Master tape Touch and Go Records

I was planning to post a different On This Day in History, but the Kevn Kinney/Peter Buck DAT Sbd that I was going to do sounded terrible!
Then the day got busy and I almost didn’t get this done. This one comes from Jason Ross’ VHS collection- it was one of his tapes that I digitized and sent back to him. Now that I have better transfer gear, it might be good time for a re-do.
Anyway, this is right off Jason’s master tape. Looks good, sounds good. Not much good Killdozer out there.

R.K.L.- VFW, Green Bay Wi 8/26/94 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape complete Rich Kids on LSD

For today’s On This Date in history, I decided to pull this one out. I feel bad because after I worked this up, I realized that I teased posting a Robbie Fulks show from The Palms on this date (we have a series of Sac Music Archive songs airing on KDRT where that was done), and I Robbie Aki was ok with releasing the beer lords video that I filmed in on this date 1988. D’oh! Sorry.

This one comes once again from Jason Ross’ collection. I could have sworn I already posted this but no- only the board tape from this show. Maybe someday we can put it all together. Barry ward has about 15min of this show on his channel, but this is the more complete 50min set, and probably all that exists.

R.K.L.- VFW, Green Bay Wi. 8/26/94 Audio only xfer from 1st gen soundboard Rich Kids on LSD

I’ve been on a bit of an RKL kick lately. It is fun to hear these shows, but also heartbreaking to listen to Jason. He was so funny- I didn’t know he had kids. Just tragic that he passed away while trying to get clean.

Anyway, this is another recording from that amazing gift that is the Jason Ross archive. I popped it into Izotope and bumped the vocals down a bit, and bumped the bass up a bit. Mix fluctuates for the 1st 5min or so but settles down. Very enjoyable.

Still Life- Wilmar Center, Madison Wi 7/30/94 xfer f/master VHS tape enhanced Green Bay Punk

Here’s a Jason Ross master VHS tape that was a bit of a challenge. The show was poorly lit so the source video was very dark. I brightened it in Elements and when I tried to denoise, it would not work… because that grainy pattern you see may not be video noise. This pattern stays static on the screen which I have never seen before. Odd.

Anyway, here it is. Too bad these were not digitized before that Green Pay punk documentary was done.

None Left Standing- Wil-mar Center, Madison Wi. 7/30/94 xfer from Master VHS Tape The Promise Ring

Man, we have been hitting Jason Ross’ collection A LOT for these On This Date in History posts. Things must get busy with shows in the summer in the northern midwest part of the USA, because there are a lot of shows he filmed during this time.
This is another one that will benefit from a lossless transfer and brightening/denoise on day. I’ll get to it eventually.
Guitarist Jason Gnewikow went on to form The Promise Ring.

Propaghandi- Lyn’s Farm,Kaukauna Wi 7/10/94 xfer f/master VHS tape Enhanced

Jason Ross sent me a lot of his master VHS tapes a few years back and I digitized them soon after I received them. I didn’t post many at the time and once I started posting them, I would do a quick check to see if it was already posted. If it was, I wouldn’t bother putting up a duplicate post. This “On This Date in History” project has me taking a closer look at these. The one that was uploaded years ago is in 240p and you can’t see much. I went ahead and did a fresh transfer on the good setup- this one should be much clearer/better! Thanks Jason!
I still find it amusing that punk bands would play on a farm in Wisconsin.

Fifteen- Eagles Club, Green Bay Wi 4/30/94 xfer 1st gen soundboard audio tape enhanced! east bay punk

This was a typical board mix- lots of vocals, drums were noticeably higher than the guitar. I was able to take Izotope rx and drop the vocals, boost the guitars/bass and it came out pretty nice! The mix fluctuates but it evens out a few minutes in.

The Crooks- Lincoln Park, Manitowoc Wi 8/13/93 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape Midwest punk band

Yet another one from Jason Ross’ collection of VHS tapes. I only did a small percentage of his collection, but they all seem to be on the right days for the On This Date project.

I attempted to research who the band is.. and there are a LOT of bands called the Crooks! Man, what an ordeal. I think that this is The Crooks who released 1 7″ record on the Def Wisconsin label and had the following members:
Bass – Eric P “Gabby”
Drums – Neil P.
Guitar – Aric M “Mighty Boy”, L.P. “Gulvin”
Vocals – Duanne K

The audio on this is very low. This was done before I knew how to boost audio in Vegas/Premiere. Sorry. Turn it up.
