Final Conflict- The Farm, San Francisco Ca 12/27/86 xfer from low gen audio cassette

This is another James R Edmonds creation- at times, he would borrow a microphone from the soundman and do an audience recording with the mic lined into a boombox. That’s the case with this one. Sounds pretty decent- it clearly has more clean low end than a typical 80s punk rock audience recording.

Neurosis- The Farm, San Francisco Ca 12/27/86 xfer from low gen soundboard tape rebalance

This tape is a bit of a mystery. I asked Wayne V where it came from, and it’s not clear. He was trading at the time with Chris Dodge, Mark Martin, and a few others. I found that this didn’t come from Chris or Mark… so the most plausible source is Tim Yohannon. Wayne used to go over to the MRR house and copy as many tapes as possible, and the way that the tape is hurriedly marked makes it look like it came from there. That’s pretty cool.

Bad Brains- The Farm, San Francisco Ca. 11/28/86 Audio Only xfer from Master audiotape Live

Here’s a show that many people still talk about, even now. We don’t know who recorded this, but it was obviously done with a pro walkman. Sounds pretty decent for a 1986 punk audience recording.

Butthole Surfers- The Farm, San Francisco Ca 10/31/86 xfer from unknown gen audio cassette

I tried to find the most frightening thing to post for today’s On This Date in History.. and what’s scarier than a bunch of drug addled psych freaks doing their thing? Too bad there isn’t video of this one out there. Maybe all those Farm videos will see the light of day sometime before we all croak.

This one is not great quality but not awful either and it almost sounds like a soundboard at times, but the crowd noise at the end leads me to believe it’s an audience.

From Eric McIntire’s collection. Maybe he can give us some info about lineage.

D.R.I.- The Farm, San Francisco Ca 10/25/86 xfer from master Soundboard cassette DRI Dirty Rotten

Late post today but it is a good one. This is from James R Edmonds’ master tape. The raw mix started out pretty good, but then guitar overpowered the mix- it was all you could hear. I did everything I could to bring up bass, vocals and drums in Izotope and it sounds pretty decent. This is peak D.R.I. — that 85-86 time frame was untouchable.

Rebalance in Izotope Rx8: Vocal +9, Bass and Drum +10, guitar -1. Yeah, it was that extreme.

Attitude Adjustment- The Farm, San Francisco Ca 10/25/86 xfer from master soundboard cassette rebal

James R Edmonds sent this tape to me a couple of months back and the tape was pretty messed up. A good part of the tape was eaten and I think some tape was also unspooled. I tried repairing it myself and realized I was over my head and sent it to our resident tape repair expert. He was able to resurrect the tape, and most of it still sounds great! There are a few seconds of “loss of fidelity” here and there, but overall stellar work. Thank you!!
The mix was excellent except it lacked bass. I rebalanced in Izotope Rx8 and I am happy with it now. And, how often do we get to share an uncirculated master soundboard tape from almost 40 years ago?

Dayglo Abortions- The Farm, San Francisco Ca 10/25/86 xfer from master soundboard cassette rebalance

This set was on the flip side of Attitude Adjustment, from James R Edmonds’ cassette. As I mentioned yesterday, this cassette arrived damaged- the outer shell was warped and tape was eaten and partially unspooled. I re-shelled it and tried to fix it, but I had to mail it to my friend Bill for repair. Thanks Bill!
This board mix was wacky. It was almost all guitar. I did my best to rebalance, boosting bass about +5, and drums/vocals WAY up (+8 or +9). It turned out ok, still a bit muffled and noisy.

Attitude Adjustment- The Farm, San Francisco 10/25/86 xfer from master tape audience recording

I debated posting this one since we already posted James R Edmonds’ soundboard recording of this show, but that one had some tape damage… so here is Wayne’s audience recording for you AA completists. Hopefully one day we can check to see if combining the recordings makes sense, but ain’t got time for that now.
