The Muffs- Tower Records, Woodland Hills Ca 5/4/95 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape Kim Shattuck Live in-store

For those of you following along, I do one “on this date” post and one collections post- which is an audio/video from my or someone’s collection I am curating. Yesterday, there was no collections post for the first time in over a year. Why? I was invited to go up to Portland and video 2 Grandaddy shows at Revolution Hall (Thanks Shawn). Between the crappy hotel wifi and me being so busy, I was only able to get an On This Date post out, after midnight. So, consider this yesterday’s collections post from Scott Hamilton’s collection. Thanks for sending these tapes my way, Scott!
This one was pretty difficult to work up. The band was playing in front of sunlit windows, so every time the camera moved the light exposure changed dramatically. I did my best with it- I pushed the brightness/exposure/contrast as much as I could so you can at least see shadowed Kim at its darkest, without it looking stupidly overexposed when the camera would correct itself.

Man, it’s fun finding stuff like this after so long.

Gary Young- Palace, Hollywood Ca. Mid 90s xfer from hi8 master tape Pavement

Here’s another one shot by Steve Rogers. It is very short (2 minutes), but I see a grand total of zero Gary Young solo videos on Youtube, so I’m posting it. I wonder how Gary is doing nowadays- I went to his studio a couple of times, pre-pavement and he seemed to have a good thing going down in Stockton, but I have no idea if the studio is still in business.

Black Crowes- Whisky a Go Go, Hollywood Ca 12/10/94 xfer from hi8 master enhanced

Here’s another unique video from Steve Rogers. Like I had mentioned before, Steve moved from Stockton to the L.A. area and was an A&R rep at American Recordings. He had access to a bunch of cool industry events. This one appears to be one of them. Black Crowes at the Whisky. Unfortunately, we were trying to find better audio to synch to this, but it appears that it doesn’t exist. If anyone has any audio for this show, please let me know.

Big Star- House of Blues,Hollywood Ca 11/1/94 9pm Show xfer DAT Master Alex Chilton Posies Power Pop

I actually taped today’s On This Date in History. I had a ticket to the 9pm show of Big Star at House of Blues and they put on a good show. The typical set at the time. Then, at the end of the set, they announce that they didn’t sell many tickets to the midnight show, so we were welcome to stick around and see that show as well. I called my wife from outside the venue on a pay phone and let her know that I was going to be LATE. Super late! Work was not fun the next day, after about 3 or 4 hours sleep.

These were done with the coresound mics which pick up a ton of bass- even with the “bass rolloff” version of the mics. I tried to EQ as much bass out of the mix while boosting the highs and mids, then popped it into Izotope to bring up the guitar and vocals. Still bassy.

Poster Children- Troubadour, N. Hollywood Ca 10/28/94 DAT Master Clone Live Indie Alternative Rock

This was a funny one- I went to the venue with Kevin Haynes and tried to get soundboard access. I thought ML was managing the band and would be cool with it (he always was), but we didn’t see him and the venue shut us down before we got started. Haha, oh well. After hearing other board tapes from the Troub and knowing how loud the Poster Children played, the audience tape was probably a better option anyway.

Danzig- Whisky a Go Go, Hollywood Ca 10/14/94 xfer from Hi8 Master Enhanced Stage Shot! Misfits

I hope everyone is having a nice weekend. I tried transferring that IGD video last night and ran into issues, so here is one from correspondent “french onion soup and kitty litter”, with another amazing Steve Rogers video. This time, he is filming on stage at a Danzig show. I am shocked that Danzig didn’t come over and say something like “I am gonna pound that camera like a jackhammer”.
As always, if anyone has a lead on better audio, I am all up for a synch.

One last thing- the best way to keep up with everything posted is to go to http://www.sacramentomusicarchive.com and sign up for email alerts there. That way you youtube subscribers won’t miss stuff like this!

The Jesus and Mary Chain- Roxy, Hollywood Ca 9/29/94 DAT Clone Audience Tape Live

Here is another uncirculated DAT clone from Kevin Haynes’ collection of masters. When I lived in L.A., I was at home often with young kids so Kevin would hit a lot of the indie/alternative shows and tape them with his gear. This one sounds really clear, but it was lacking on the low end. I tried to EQ it a bit so it at least had a little bottom.

Air Miami- Troubadour, W. Hollywood Ca 9/27/94 DAT Master Clone Mark Robinson Unrest Live

Hm, this one is odd. The band is clearly playing an opening set so the stage volume should not be an issue, but the recording has vocal distortion. I wonder what happened- the Troub has a decent sound system. Anyway, uncirculated Air Miami so yay.

Luna- The Roxy, Hollywood Ca 7/14/94 xfer from DAT Master Audio Nakamichi CM-300 Galaxie 500

Today was one of the busiest days I have had in months. I am finally getting the On This Date in History post out late.
This one has a story. I videotaped a few early Luna shows. Looks like 3 of them in 1992 and 2 in 1994. Well, it SHOULD have been 3 in 1994…
I get to the club with my video bag and let them know that I have permission from Luna to video the show. Guys at the door sneered at me, then proceed to tell me that they don’t care what the band says. You are not bringing that camera in. So I had to put my $900 (1992$) camera back in the car and hope it was there when I got back.
As a grand F*ck You to the bouncers, I snuck my DAT and a Nakamichi CM300 mic in anyway and audio taped the show. Because that was bullshit.
Recording sounds great, but there was no bass and very low vocals. I fixed it up in Izotope Rx8 so you can actually hear Dean and Justin.
Cuts in on the first song. I had some mic issues
