Here’s a late post today. Another one from Steve Rogers’ collection- a band who was on the American Recordings roster in the mid-90s. We think this is from the Roxy.

Thanks to Heinz Vlatin for the better audio. The improved audio source is missing the first 4 songs, so if anyone has a complete set of decent audio, we are still looking! Includes the encore with Chris Robinson.

I am part of a northwest music facebook group, and I heard that Bill Rieflin passed away. I did not know who he was, so I looked him up… WOW. He was not only the drummer for many of my favorite bands (he was in SO MANY BANDS), but he was unbelievably talented. I tend to focus on drums a lot when listening to music, which is probably due to my cousin Tony Schwartz being a drummer in my formative years. I did not even realize that he was the drummer in this incarnation of The Swans that I saw until I looked up the band member timeline… and I recall that the drummer kicked ass. So this was at the Roxy, who were a complete pain in the ass about taping. I had to smuggle the gear into the club, and then hide the DAT deck in my pocket (mics on eyeglasses). I set the levels at a “reasonable level” (levels used for Foo Fighters a couple weeks earlier at the same club… I check the deck about 15min in and the levels were PEGGED! Shit. In my haste to change levels without being seen, I unplug the mics. So I lose about 1-2min of the show. So in summary, it was f*cking LOUD, is not great for the 1st 15min or so.

I saw/taped the Foo Fighters twice over the course of 10 weeks in 1995, and I’ve never seen them since. Nothing against them, I just never felt compelled to go to another show. The odd thing about this show is that I remember standing somewhere that was as close to the PA Mains as possible, and it still sounds a little distant. It doesn’t sound bad, I am just picky I guess. Oh well, I tried. The show features a very early performance of My Hero- Dave mentions that they wrote it last week. After plowing through some setlists, it looks like this was the 3rd time it was played.

I don’t think I ever posted or shared this video before. The audio from the camera’s stock audio mic was terrible- totally distorted. I tried to do some shadow correction in premiere but it kinda freaked out, so I merely denoised/degrained the video. I’ve also had a DAT master soundboard of the show, but the mix was pretty uneven. I was able to rebalance it in izotope to make it listenable.. I pushed it as far as I could without making it sound weird.
Featuring the head and long black hair of Todd Nakamine in the foreground 🙂
Oh, and this is the earliest GF video on youtube… which proves nothing except show how old I am.

Here is the full soundboard from the Aron’s show. I posted the video earlier this week, but it cuts in at abour the 10 minute mark. I can’t remember, and I wonder why I didn’t film the entire show. I think I was worried about standing in front of people… which explains why I cut Jessy off on the video rather than filming straight on. One of the best encores ever- Dragon Lady/The Grand Tour. Damn.

I already gave my opinion of the venue (acoustic and general vibe) on the Mike Watt post, but this set sounds pretty good. I remember the anticipation leading up to the show- there was no Foo Fighters music available so pretty much everyone was hearing this for the first time. I remember hearing “Big Me” at the show and being hooked right away.

Since Brian McKenna posted the story about the short-handed Sacramento stop of this tour, I thought that I would digitize my DAT master recording of the show at The Palace a few days later… on the 25th anniversary of the show. Man, I hated the Palace. Security was a huge pain in the ass, and the theater’s acoustics was one of the worst I have dealt with. I am about 15 feet from the left stack and it is still distant, echoey and boomy. My one good palace story was that I once forgot a battery pack for a pavement show (taping through the soundboard) so I faked illness/medical emergency to get out to my car for the pack- they were strict on ins and outs. I thanked the security guy on the way back in and showed him the pack as I strolled back in. heh heh. I know that Vedder and Grohl performed the entire tour, but I don’t know if Carla did the entire thing. Hearing her sing some of these songs is a real treat. And we also get KIRA on her only appearance of the tour!
The rest of the bands from that night are forthcoming.

Here’s the opening set by Seattle-based Hovercraft. I didn’t know much about them, but it looks like they were active from 1993-2001. They did the entire tour with Watt. Instrumental space rock type of stuff.

I thought I was done with Scott Hamilton’s collection, but I was trying to clean the studio (an impossible task) and found 1 more tape. This one sounds really good for The Palace- that place was an acoustic nightmare. It must be a pro walkman recording- no distortion with high and low end! Cool.
