I did not go to the Foo Fighters show last night. I was home with the kids. Jason Johnson was there and he filmed a couple of songs! Not only that, but “hoserama” also provided multitrack soundboard audio that sounds really nice, even before he has had time to mix it down.

Since the Foo Fighters are so popular for firing Josh Freese, I figured I would post something from them for On This Date in History /s. My favorite Josh Freese recording is that Cali Giraffes album that he did with Kim Warnick of the Fastbacks. Great stuff.
This tape is another one of those “Why isn’t this online somewhere yet” deals. What the heck?
This tape is another mystery. I really should have kept better notes when getting these 25+ years ago. First of all, this is a very late cassette trade, so the person I got it from must have had damned good stuff. I became a DAT snob around this time and quit trading on cassette with only a few exceptions. Pissed a lot of my old trading friends off. Sorry.
Second, this is a master cassette. Someone taped this off of the BBC for me and mailed me the tape from England. The tape is even an odd type of TDK I have never seen before. My tape list says “thanks Michael” for the tape, but the only 2 Michaels that I remember trading with at the time were Michael Siou and Michael Pemberton… and they both were in the US and were on DAT at that point. If you are the Michael who taped this and sent it to me, please remind me.

Here is the last band on DAT#528. That’s right, there were TEN bands on that one DAT. I have 2,000 DATs and hardly any have been digitized. So, add the 2,000 DATs and 4,000 audio cassettes and thousands of videos together- at this rate of one post per day (counts fingers and toes) I’ll die of old age before we finish here. Buckle up for the long haul, friends. Foo Fighters start the show with a cool Angry Samoans cover.
Over the next few weeks, you will be getting full sets of all bands who played the KROQ Almost Acoustic Xmas, directly off of the DAT master tape. Why? Well, audio to video synch wizard king bean asked for a couple of sets from the weekend of shows, and it just made sense to run the entire set of DATs and archive then now…. especially since they were DIC brand (a little taper humor for the nerds out there). I moved back to Sacramento over Thanksgiving weekend of 1995, and this took place a month afterwards. HUGE thanks to Kevin Haynes for taping this for me, and then sending the DAT masters to me. What a guy.

I saw/taped the Foo Fighters twice over the course of 10 weeks in 1995, and I’ve never seen them since. Nothing against them, I just never felt compelled to go to another show. The odd thing about this show is that I remember standing somewhere that was as close to the PA Mains as possible, and it still sounds a little distant. It doesn’t sound bad, I am just picky I guess. Oh well, I tried. The show features a very early performance of My Hero- Dave mentions that they wrote it last week. After plowing through some setlists, it looks like this was the 3rd time it was played.

I already gave my opinion of the venue (acoustic and general vibe) on the Mike Watt post, but this set sounds pretty good. I remember the anticipation leading up to the show- there was no Foo Fighters music available so pretty much everyone was hearing this for the first time. I remember hearing “Big Me” at the show and being hooked right away.
