I probably have too many projects going at once- today’s post comes from a project where I go through the list of already-created DVDs for any Sacramento-related content. I am working alphabetically, and am on Numbers and A’s so far. Still have the rest of the alphabet to go. Tons more 7 Seconds to be posted. I am also digitizing some of my and other stuff for friends. I am almost done with most of those (except Brian McKenna’s and Dal Basi’s big boxes o’demos). I need to get tapes back to you all, and get the rest of those posted. Plus, I am working on my master tapes and getting those posted, sometimes with the help of King Bean for audio synchs. So we are not running out of things to do over here. If you’d like to help add posts to the archive, there are hundreds of existing posts on youtube that could be mapped, so please let me know if you’d like to help.
Today’s post comes from the 1980s tape trading underground. There were certain venues where you knew people taped a lot- City Gardens, Houston Venues, Washington DC, and this one. There was one guy who filmed a bunch of the stuff at The Anthrax club.
I didn’t film or digitize this one, so no credits this time.
Here’s an early one for you today. The tape had the date as 4/13/87 and I could not find anything about this show (w/Agression) on that date. I then referenced James’ list and the actual date seems to be 10/11/86, and confirmed that this is one of James’ master tapes. There is a flyer for a show w/Agression for that date, so I am running with it. Drums were a little light in the mix, so I bumped them up slightly in Izotope.

Man, there are so many things wrong with this video and I spent way too much time trying to fix them. But it is one of my all time favorite sets by the band, and there are not many vids with this lineup. That looks like Joe Bansuelo on bass, and I don’t know on guitar. So I got this in trade in the late 1980’s and back then, if you got a dub of a VHS tape that was remotely watchable it was amazing. I had a memory of the quality being WAY better on this until I popped it in to digitize it. Yikes. Plus, you have that superimposed “D” that is annoying as hell, which was on the source tape. The guy’s trade list had “D” in the comments and I was like “I wonder what that means”. OH. I tried to fix the picture but it is way too overexposed. I remixed the audio and de-hum’d it in izotope and then it would not synch back up properly. So here it is, warts and all. No apologies- it is a great set.

I have a confession- I don’t listen to 100% of every show I post. It depends on how busy I am and how good the performance is. I rarely have the time to listen to an entire show… but this one was different. I love this era of 7 Seconds- New Wind had just come out (sounds like it was in transit to record stores at the time) and the band played a bunch of new material from it. Great stuff- I’ve listened to it twice so far. The board mix was light on guitar, so I rebalanced it a bit with Izotope, and the tape was clean enough for the rebalance to work. The mix fluctuates for the first 5-10min, then locks in for the rest of the set. Huge thanks to James R Edmonds for sending this one to be digitized. I think he has one other Farm sbd from 1985 that I am dying to hear as well.

With the news of Freeborn Hall getting torn down, I thought I would digitize this old audio recording. Between the non-professional equipment used + the volume + the acoustics of freeborn, this sounds like ass but what a great set. Early 1986 is definitely my favorite 7 seconds era- right after Walk Together and about the time of the DC Sessions from New Wind.

Here’s another one from Wayne Vanderkuil’s vast collection of tapes- we are just getting started with his stuff! I am about 20 tapes in of hundreds, if not a thousand. Now if work would stop sucking all my time, I could get them done… Here is one that he did from the Rock On Broadway of 7 Seconds. I never tire of them, and was so happy to finally see them in September after a 6 year hiatus.

I’m late today- too much happening at work. No week would be complete without a tape from Wayne Vanderkuil’s collection. Here is 7 Seconds opening for Dead Kennedys at Keystone Palo Alto. Wayne also found this sweet photo of a Keystone match box, back when clubs and bars did that kind of thing. I EQ’d this one and was able to pull bass out and boost it up. The guitar is mixed in with all that midrange, so no such luck there. Sounds pretty good for the equipment, venue and era.

First off, this is a photo of 7 Seconds at The Vats in SF from 6/5/84. This show is not from the vats- the tape was labeled as “SF 6/2/84”. I thought it was from the Vats, but then after listening closely, they say that they are playing the vats TOMORROW and Ruthies later tomorrow night. I then researched a bit online and Metallipromo (usually a good site for info) has the Vats/Ruthie’s shows on May 6, and a show at the On Broadway the day before, on May 5. I am assuming that this is the On Broadway 5/5/84 show, even though the tape says differently. This comes from Wayne Vanderkuil’s collection. This time around, I pulled everything with Mark Martin’s writing on it and checked it against my list. As I mentioned before, I got my start taping and trading through Mark. I would borrow his tape recorder and then when he got out of tape trading, he basically gave me about 200-300 tapes to get started. He kept quite a few tapes(which are now gone) so that’s why I am doing this cross check. So this one is ? source to Mark Martin to Wayne. I found a flyer to the actual show that I will add in the facebook comments.
