Bliss- Demo 1992 xfer from Master Tape

I was a big fan of Bliss back in the late 80s- they were a cattle club mainstay and had a very different sound- sort of like some of the more obscure/instrumental SST bands and related- think Always August, Abecedarians, etc. Brandon (guitar) even played on of those Dan Armstrong clear lucite guitars.
I was up at a show in Nevada City a few years ago and someone tapped my shoulder. I turn around and it’s Brandon- instant recognition even though we had not seen each other for 25 years. It was wild.
This demo is a bit later on, after they moved more into the alternative funk/groove direction. They also picked up a new vocalist who I am not as familiar with. Thanks to Brandon for mailing me the CDs of the old demos. I still have the original demo of the late 80s stuff that I need to digitize.

Sugartooth- We are Really Good 5 Songs demo 1992 xfer from master tape Grunge Alternative

OK, I really checked this one and it really IS Sugartooth! I still need to figure out what happened with yesterday’s post.
This one comes from Eric Mcintire’s collection. Sugartooth put out this demo before being signed to Geffen for a couple albums in the mid 90s. Better than average alt/grunge. I would have been a fan if I ran across them in the 90s.. and I am surprised I didn’t, since I lived in L.A. when they were active.

Deftones- Sacto Active Rock community cable show 1992 Live in studio FULL SHOW xfer VHS Master Tape

We have been sitting on this one for a long time- many years- but thanks to Lizz Fisher, we can finally post this. Thanks as well to Romain Coquette, who helped gather permission from the band to post the one song that has since gone a bit viral.
This version is a higher quality transfer off of Lizz’ (the show’s host AND producer) personal tape. And with this, all of the Sacto Active rock shows have now been documented and released. All of them (and thousands more) are available on the sacramentomusicarchive.com website.

The Posies- Undated Gefffen Demo xfer from Master promo/archive cassette

I acquired this demo in addition to the 1991 demo that I posted last week. It sounds like it could be rough mixes or album tracks, I can’t tell and I did not have time to compare. Saying sorry to myself was a bonus track for the omnivore reissue, but again there was no time to compare. Hopefully this offers something unique

Playground- 6 song demo 1992 xfer from Master Demo Cassette Tape Davis California Band

Here’s the other demo that Barry Mills Prickett had of the mighty Playground. Just curious since I was not around while they were active- were they popular? Seems like they should have been one of the most popular bands in town with songs this solid.
Tracks: Something Has to Give / When Everything is Said and Done / Paradise Lost / Brighter Days / Cruz / Just Another Song

Buick- Demo, Davis California Band xfer from master cassette tape Early 90s

Here’s an obscure one for you. I had heard of Buick before, but I don’t recall ever hearing them. After doing some internet work, here’s what I found about them:
Buick was an early-1990s, Davis, California instrumental rock duo consisting of Scott Lawrimore on guitars and Jeff Clark on drums. Sweatertongue, their only album, was recorded at Enharmonik in Sacramento, and released by Lather Records in 1992. They were influenced by Fugazi and E.V.O.L.

“Buick is essentially a drums/guitar duo with the occasional pal lending a hand instrumentally or vocally. The songs develop slowly and ladder their way up to higher tempos. Four minute songs pack the velocity of two minute ones and Buick can resemble a younger, more volatile Pell Mell or a less bombastic Slint. Buick eschews the pointless vocal in favor of instrumental development. It’s good. Really good. Sweatertongue has real power, motivation and depth and grows with each listen. Who needs much more than drums and guitars?”
