Tony Passarell’s Shiva X: Luna’s Cafe, Sacramento Ca 10/14/19

I know the archive leans heavily/completely on punk/metal/rock/etc, but there are so many more incredible artists from the city.
Tony Passarell passed away on January 13. He was a central point for freeform music in the city, bringing artists together for improvisational jams like the one here. He could play many instruments, but his main one was the saxphone. I wish I had gotten out to see him perform.
As you can see in the last paragraph of his obituary, in lieu of flowers he asked for people to support the arts. I plan to do so by seeing his son’s band(Anime Aliens) play at Musiclandria tonight.

Tony Passarell, Dana Wendel, Stephen Elliott, Dave Thomas- Winery Session 6/5/19 free jazz

Here’s another one from Tony Passarell’s massive archive of music. The disc says pt. 1, but I don’t see a Pt. 2 disc yet. Hopefully it will turn up again someday.
This sounds like a studio recording- no crowd noise at all at the start or end of this set.

Tony Passarell- Stephen, Charles, Robert and Tony Session(w/Davon) 8/14/13 Rough Studio Master Jazz

Time for yet another new collection. This brings us to 31 distinct audio/video collections… so about one a month from each.

Anthony Siino brought me at least 500 tapes from Tony Passarell’s collection last week. So many tapes and CD’s! Since the archive is heavily weighted toward punk, metal and alternative rock, it’s nice to get something different in here. Also a nice way to remember Tony, who passed away earlier this year.

What you see on the CD image is all I have on this group. If anyone knows full names, which studio, etc.. let me know. I will add the details.

Tony Passarell’s Thin Air Orchestra- 2114 P St, Sacramento Ca 5/12/12 master video Free Jazz

For the collections post today, we have a video from Tony Passarell’s huge archive of stuff. Not only are there about 500 tapes, but there are also spindles of discs with live shows, which is where this comes from.
Tony conducts the orchestra and then joins in on saxophone.

It was really dark, so I did my best to brighten it up and denoise the video. It came out pretty decent. This might be a point and shoot camera source.

Byron Blackburn’s Labor Day Session 9/7/09 Rare independent release CD Tony Passarell Free Jazz

I debated posting this one from Tony Passarell’s collection since it is an official release, but it seems pretty hard to find so I went ahead.

By the way, if you are not watching the world baseball classic or the awards show and you like jazz, you should head out to Musiclandria since Tony’s son Charlie is doing an Anime Aliens saxophone set. He is working tirelessly to get a lively jazz scene happening here.
