Jonny Polonsky- Raleigh Hotel, Miami Fl April 96 xfer from Hi8 Master Tape

Here is another Steve Rogers video, this one from Raleigh NC. Man, that American Recordings travel budget must have been sweet in the heyday of alt/grunge. Haha.

Edit: This was from the Raleigh hotel in Miami, same time frame as the slayer/etc respectable cafe show.
This one is filmed outdoors with an odd effect that is present on the source video. As the sun sets, the the effect gets more prominent. If there is interest, I could enhance/brighten this in a couple of batches to make the end of the set more watchable.

Live Concert Video

Dinosaur Jr.- Brewery, Raleigh NC 2/21/89 xfer from 1st gen audio cassette Complete Sony Pro Walkman

Collections post from Anonymous’ tape collection. We had a day of Anonymous today- his recorder was used for the on this day post, and this is a show that he traded for back in the late 80s.

I am pretty sure that Todd Goss recorded this show. People like Todd and Jon Vogel were super helpful in the early days of trading. Anon and I (well, more me than him) were punk rock dipsh*ts using equipment that was not designed for live concerts. Jon and Toss (and others) were already using the Sony Pro Walkman and they totally influenced us to do the same. I guess they are to blame for all this gear, haha. Anon got his D6 in May of 1989 and I followed in October… thanks to Radley and Whole Earth wholesale. Thanks guys.

Dino Jr were notorious for being impossibly loud in the late 80s, even moreso than today. Even with Todd’s nice gear, this recording was a bit distorted before I was able to EQ and rebalance it out. Not bad now.

Check out that Raleigh late 80s nightlife. Yow. Music starts at about 3:40.

Pianosaurus- The Pier, Raleigh NC 9/1/87 xfer from 2nd gen audio cassette Complete Show

For today’s On This Date in History, here is a “What the Heck was I Thinking” moment from tape trading in the 80s. Like I had said before, Anonymous and I have been taping/trading shows since the 80s. He seemed to be trading with all of the cool early SST/indie tapers who had good equipment and I was more focused on video.

I was over at Anonymous’ place sometime in the late 80s, looking at Todd Goss’ tape list and I see this show listed. I loved that Pianosaurus album so I bugged the hell out of him to get this. Let’s just say that the concept of playing on toy instruments does not translate well into a live setting… sorry man. Fast forward to today and I learn that Pianosaurus were opening for one of the greatest bands ever, Guadalcanal Diary at this show. Should have grabbed that one instead.
