Greg Ginn- KDVS Interview, Davis Ca 9/19/94 xfer f/master audio cassette Black Flag Gone SST Records

Collections post from Ken Doose’s audiotapes- there are a ton of tapes here from Ken and we are just getting started with them. I just digitized a stack of 12 earlier this week.

Here is yet another one that doesn’t seem to be out there at all- not on YT, google searches don’t show it anywhere. Thanks Ken!

The Creamers- Live in KDVS Studio A, Davis Ca. 7/93 xfer from 1st gen cassette

Damn, this sounds amazing! Thanks once again to Mike Siou and Sam Habash for this one. Mike was a KDVS DJ and made a cassette copy off of the master reel, and Sam recently digitized it with his Nakamichi. Great document of a much loved semi-local band, by way of L.A.
One quick note- youtube detected a copyrighted song about 19min in and blocked the entire thing from being posted. The algorithm was likely wrong, but I just trimmed it out and posted. So if it sounds like something got cut, it is because it did!

Blackfish- KDVS FM, UC Davis Radio Show early 90s Audio Only xfer master cassette Death Thrash METAL

Here is Eddie’s radio show from KDVS- his Blackfish show’s format was theme-based. This one was a metal theme, but he also did reggae/world, Pink Floyd, etc themes. I bet that would drive a programmer nuts! Haha.

The Mighty Strangers- Live in KDVS Studio A, Davis Ca 1/23/92 xfer from 1st gen cassette indie rock

Thanks once again to Mike Siou and Sam Habash for this one. Mike was a KDVS DJ and made a cassette copy off of the master reel, and Sam recently digitized it with his Nakamichi. Mighty Strangers were a Davis band who were active in the early 90s. Dave Thompson on Bass, Rusi Gustafson on drums, Mike Duey on guitar, Eric Janssen on guitar and vocals. They had some stuff released on comps, but I am unsure if they had any proper full length releases.

Verbal Assault- KDVS Studio A, Davis Ca October 1986 xfer from cassette

Let me remind you that Verbal Assault is playing the TINY Cafe Colonial tonight! They are playing alongside a stacked bill of bands, including Gel.
The tape itself is a bit of a mystery. I clearly got this in trade with someone outside of the Sacramento area, which is odd. Almost all of my KDVS tapes came from Ken Doose, Mike Siou, or the bands themselves. As a result, the tape sounds a bit fast due to multiple high-speed dubs I would guess. I am terrible at fixing pitch so I kept it as is. Enjoy, and come on out tonight. Ticket link in FB comments.

Dissonance- KDVS Live in Studio A, Davis Ca 7/2/86 xfer f/master audio cassette Flint Mi Punk Hardco

The last time I grabbed a handful of tapes to digitize from Ken Doose’s collection, there were a ton of KDVS Studio A sessions. Here is one from a band that was on tour out here from the midwest. Pretty cool. There was some light reception static that cleaned up nicely (after a few minutes) in Izotope.

This one is pretty distorted, but that is just how the band sounded in studio. Stick with it for a few minutes and it gets better- both with the mix and the reception static.

Identity Crysis- KDVS Studio A, Davis Ca 6/4/86 xfer from 1st gen audio cassette mystic records

Oh man, what a day. I had digitized a VHS tape and was all ready to post it at about 5pm and realized that show took place on June 5. D’oh! You’ll see that one tomorrow.
So I found an Old 97s show from Harlow’s that I could have sworn I had posted before AND that Jim McLain and I multicam’d, but it’s not on youtube. Sooo I start processing that one and it is going to process for 5 hours, past my bedtime. So here is plan C. Not a bad one.
I got this in trade from Ken Doose way back in the 1980’s when I first started trading tapes. Ken has had some health issues so this one goes out to him, hope you feel better soon!
One day we will do proper transfers from Ken’s master tapes. He taped a bunch of stuff off the radio from studio A.

Jim Litz- KDVS radio show, UC Davis Ca 12/1/77 xfer from DJ’s archive tape Prog Rock

Here is pt 2 in a series of 2.
Jim was a DJ at KDVS in the 1970’s, and he reached out to me after I posted Gordo’s set last month. Thanks for reaching out, Jim!
This is a 3+ hour show of music from December 1977. The show was heavy on the prog rock- it’s a fun listen.
YT required a trim out of a song or 2 before allowing it to post.
