I figured I would wait until the football games were over before posting today. I need to admit I had no idea who Smokers were and they just happened to be playing in between Planet on a Chain and Annihilation Time so I kept the cameras rolling.. I just looked them up to see who they were… Well, holy sh*t I’m an idiot. This is Andy Asp (from legendary lookout band Nuisance) on guitar and vocals. Also features Cyrus Comiskey from drunk horse and others on bass… I think. He was on the recorded material. So glad I fell into taping this one! They have a 7″ and a demo tape and other stuff at their intuitively named bandcamp page.

I was archiving my footage the other day and realized that I have this footage that I shot while setting up the ladder cam for the POAC/Annihilation Time show. The band is called Losers, and I know nothing about them other than this 4min of footage. I checked through ths first page of about 20 “losers” bands on discogs and none of them matched their description. If you know anything, let me know.
Thanks Sarah Creamer for the info- the band is from the bay area and are: JERJ-DRUMS ANDREW-GUITAR ETHAN-VOX-STEVE-BASS

I previously posted my schoeps audio recording of this show and wrote about how amazing this show was- the band was on fire and the crowd was going nuts. Now that I finally learned to mix multitracks, here is the video. It turned out pretty good. The only issue is that 8 minutes of the show is missing from this version- the hard drive at Gilman that stores the multitrack files filled up and stopped recording during Annihilation Time’s set. We missed about 8 minutes in the middle of the show. If anyone is dying to see the full multicam with 8 minutes of inferior audio in the middle, let me know. I can post it but it would be a pain in the ass to splice it all together. Hope you like the mix. Maybe I should have bumped the snare up a bit.

One of the openers for that Annihilation Time show was Planet on a Chain. They are from the bay area, so I have caught them a couple of times now. They put out some 7″s on small/self-released labels, and then they were signed to hardcore behemoths Relativity Records. I had a quick chat while buying merch and getting permission to video, and we were joking about them “hitting the big time”. Haha. Anyway, by friend Tromster loves the band and this edit reflects that. The multitrack mix came out really nice as well. This could be the best sounding Gilman video since that Jawbreaker 2018 show, and one of the best video edits so far from the venue. I wish they could all turn out this good. The new lighting kinda messes with the gopros, otherwise perfect.

Here at long last is the Scowl edit from last October. We could not get the audio to synch with one of the GH5s angles and were ready to give up on the project, but our friend Derek Purtell was able to make it work. Thanks Derek! Gopros got knocked around but a couple of stage anfgles were good enough to use still.

Happy Friday everyone- it’s time for a few videos over the weekend. It’s time to fall back in the US, so set your clocks back tomorrow night- you can use that extra hour watching stuff. I went to Gilman for the first time in 10 months to see this show. It was nice to see so many people there. I worry abut the long term longevity of the place, but it is doing well for now. Yay. Huge thanks to Tromster(as usual) for the edit, and someone new helped out with this one- Otto Freeman ran sound that night, mixed it down, and sent it over about a day after the show. Superhuman soundperson! Thanks. I filmed this band at Tromster’s request but ended up really enjoying the set. I would go out of my way to see them again- great stuff! Unfortunately, one camera was knocked out before the set started, another one had too tight of a shot and cut off one guitar player, and the drum gopro is a bit low… but it edited together nicely.

Wow, it’s 10pm and I almost missed the daily post. One of the more physically demanding days I have had in a while. My good friend Age asked me to film these guys if I was able to get to the Scowl/Militarie Gun show early enough. I guess you could say that I got it done halfway. The GH5S ladder angle is too tight (same angle as Militarie Gun) and I could not get my act together on my monopod angle until about 8 minutes in. That has to be a new record of me not being able to get my sh*t together. Thankfully, Otto’s multitrack sounds great so you can at least listen to it and be entertained. I really liked the band- I am a sucker for those chorusy distorted guitars, man.

As promised, here is one from Robert Eggplant’s video collection. He has a few sets filmed from this show but none of them are clearly defined. I do hear them announce that this band was a late add and they had no name. Features Robert on keyboards

I don’t even know where to begin with this one. I busted ass and left early from Sacramento to get to Cornerstone right when the doors open at 7pm, and I was one of the first 10 people in the venue. I start asking around for permission to film, since I have permission from MDC. The PM tells me that my facebook message conversation with Barry isn’t good enough, he needs to talk to him in person. MDC is not at the venue yet, so I wait… and wait. In the meantime, I ask the soundman for a board feed and I will only plug in once permission is secured which gets me a vague “OK…”. Barry gets there at about 7:40 and gets me permission for MDC and offers to help with GBH- thanks Barry! I run into Ross from GBH at the bar and he gives me the “thumbs up” for video, but I knew that would not be enough unless I got to the PM and GBH’s manager… which was impossible. The show is sold out and the venue is pretty small with a balcony that goes across all 3 non-stage sides of the venue. I mention this because when a punk show sells out there, just about everyone goes down to the floor and a big pit starts, smashing the rest of the crowd against the sides and making it impossible to move through the place. This is what I get to deal with in setting up 6 cameras (5 mounted plus the one I am using) across the entire venue- front and back, stage left and right. I got them set up just in time and bolt back to the soundboard to see if I can plug in the recorder- soundman is busy and unavailable so I hit record, leave my XLR cables clearly visible (needing them to be plugged in), and go to my spot to video. I sure hope he plugs it in! I film in front of a pole that is in between the 3 merch tables on the left hand side of the venue. I figured I’d be OK there since it is all the way on one side of the venue… nope. I am in the middle of a walkway that appears when MDC starts and I have no place to go,. People bump into me constantly through the set. My position for audio is shitty, since the sweet spot in the venue is in the middle of the pit. I make the best of it anyway. Set ends and I go to the stage to pull the gopros off, and I see GBH’s manager(who I never got to talk to) and the PM waving at me, asking me to get the gopros off the stage urgently. I’m going as fast as I can. I fight through people and pull the cameras off the stage and poles and lay my camera backback right into a puddle of beer while pulling down the last one. The very last thing I do is go to the soundboard to get my recorder. There my recorder sits, with an XLR pair of soundboard plugs sitting about 3 inches from my plugs… not plugged in. I wanted to take a picture because I couldn’t believe it, but I couldn’t get the phone out of my pocket because it was TOO FUCKING PACKED to even do so. So despite all of this, this is probably the best MDC video I have done. Dave has an in ear monitor and it has made all the difference- he can hear and he is on point. Crowd is wild and the band is on fire. I did not film GBH. In fact, I left during the first song or 2. I’m too old for this shit. As a bonus, I’ll post me walking out of the venue during GBH. If you want to see a GBH video, search the website or channel- there are 2 multicamera videos done with permission.

Here is that bonus post I promised- I had to cut out a bit of it where a guy complimented my Tank shirt and I had to tell him Algy Ward died. That happened twice. Refer to the MDC post to understand why this is only 5min long and audio only.
